[Chris Priestly's Disclaimer here.]

:wizard:Javierabegazo has taken the liberty of updating. The outdated FAQ is here:wizard:

Modding on the Xbox 360 is about as easy as eating Waffles.

Posted Image

Following common sense, no one needs me to say that it's always prudent to keep a folder of all your save files as Backups in case you mess up a modding code and the file ends up corrupted. Don't be scared, like I said, it's easy as eating Waffles.
The official Xbox Live update from a year ago enabled USB memory drive options.

****

You'll need 3 tools, a USB device, a Save File Extracting/Injecting Program, and a Save File Editor.

*******************  You'll need: *********************

1) USB Device
Posted ImageHow to format a USB flash drive as a storage device for the Xbox 360

2) Save File Extracting/Injecting Program,
Modio

3) Save Editing Program:
Pordis Shepard's customized Mass Effect 2 Gibbed Save Editor
:wizard: *Highly Recommended* :wizard:

or the old Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 Save Editor Xbox360

***************************************************************************

The actual mod process is very simple, and once you get the hang of it, modding will take you easily less than 5 minutes.
  • Put Shepard Career Save on USB with Xbox
  • Open Shepard Career Save with "Modio" on PC
  • Extract individual Save File (i.e. 021.xbsav) and open extracted save with "Gibbed Save Editor"
  • Make changes/mod values to Save File, save the changes in "Gibbed Save Editor"
  • Inject newly modded Save File into Shepard Career Save with "Modio" on PC
  • Rehash/Resign, then Save to Device with "Modio" on PC
  • Play Mass Effect 2 without tedium and with fun new Abilities on Xbox
See? Super easy. 7 Steps

Throughout the FAQ, I will be assuming that you make:
1. A folder for Backup Save Files
2. A folder for save files you will be modding

The Steps:

Posted Image     In MEMORY of the Xbox Dashboard, find the Shepard Career file you wish to mod and move it from your Xbox HDD onto your newly formatted USB MEMORY STICK

Posted Image     Unplug your USB and plug it into your PC

Posted Image     Open Modio, and click on OPEN FROM DEVICE

Posted Image

Posted Image     Click through Mass Effect 2, and click on your desired Career you wish you mod.

Posted Image     Click on the top-right tab, FILE CONTENTS

Posted Image

Posted Image     Right-click on the save file you wish you mod, and click EXTRACT TO and put it where ever you are keeping your save files to be modded.

*Smart Tip: If you have never made a backup of this career, click on [Show File] and Copy---do not move---the career file to your backup directory. If your career is ever corrupted, you can use a copy of this career file, along with your game saves to recover.

Posted Image

Posted Image     Open Gibbed Save Editor and open up your extracted save file and it will look something like this:

Posted Image

From here you can do a great many number of things.

*Smart Tip #2*

If you see a really cool Shepard on the database, plug in the face codes into Gibbed Editor. The next time you open the game save you can EXPORT the Headmorph and keep a Folder full of Headmorphs that you can switch in and out and easily give your Shepard a makeover

Posted Image     After modding, click SAVE and either overwrite the save you opened or you can just rename it as the next successive save, like instead of 021.xbsav, you can rename it 022.xbsav so that you keep the prior one as an unmodded backup save

Posted Image     In Modio, right click on the FILE CONTENTS, and then click INJECT FILE and insert your modded save file.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image     Click on the top-left tab, GENERAL FILE INFO and click REHASH & RESIGN and then click SAVE TO DEVICE

This sounds really great and I thank you for the info; but I've got just one question.

Will downloading it void my warranty or get the Microsoft hit squad on my tail? They've been getting pretty hardcore about console modding these days and I don't want to risk adding anything if there is a chance that the next Microsoft patch will delete my account in retribution for my desire to mod my game.

Hmmm, if Darth doesn't know I'll check out the sites he listed to see if there's any info on their forums or what not about the threat of drawing the wrath of the Microsoft banhammer because I'd love to take advantage of this; but I'm not willing to risk getting my account canceled just so I can get my hair, clothes, guns, armor, etc., looking the way I'd like.

Another question. If I start modding save files will the game still be able to read my old save files or will it freak out if I try to load a save that hasn't been created with the mods already in place?

Is there a way to add Heavy Weapon ammo with this? Or perhaps get those extra outfits I've been seeing?

This is for everyone who wants to use the new USB memory-

How to use Xtaf Usb Xplorer:
1. Insert USB drive into XBox, format, then move one (1) ME2 save from your HDD or Memory Unit to the USB drive.
2. Download Xtaf Usb Xplorer from here: http://halo.gruntmod...elease_Gui_.rar
3. Unzip the .rar and open the program. If it asks you to update, feel free to not update.
4. Go to "File," then click "Open Device."
5. Click "{dir}content" and then the next 4 entries until you come across a file named like this: (Shep's first name)_(random? number)_(class)_(dd/mm/yy of the save). Ex.: John_12_Soldier_050210.
6. Select the file and hit "Extract." Remember to back up this file
somewhere other than the location where you extracted the save to.
7. From here, proceed to steps 4 through 11 of Darth_Trethon's mod guide.
8. In Xtaf, delete the save you put on the USB, then hit "Inject" and find your modded save.
9. Once you are done injecting the save, close Xtaf and hook up the USB drive to the Xbox. Transfer the modded save to the HDD or MU and start playing ME2.

wait so if I use the USB, I don't need the cable, just the software on my computer?

Also would this conflict any of the DLC and with this, is it poseable to unlock all the casual outfits?

There has been banhammer threats over modding 360's.  In fact, if your machine breaks down, you can't get it repaired by Microsoft if it's modified.  Microsoft really doesn't like it when their machines have been modified by outside sources. So yes, hit squads will be sent to your profile if it's ever found out that you modded your machine.

No cable needed, just Xtaf, Modio, and Gibbed. As far as I know, there is no problem of getting it working with DLC aside from Kasumi's mission resetting all your ammo. Casual outfits are probably a no-go, considering that PC players had to mess with file that isn't incorporated into the saves. Getting more weapons for squad members has the same issue, although I've heard that you can add bonus powers to your squad members.

And for anyone worried that this will get them banned it won't, because it's only a save mod to a singleplayer game. Microsoft cares about multiplayer and hardware mods, not people screwing around with saves for an RPG with no co-op or multiplayer.

Don't see why, this is kinda harmless, all you are oding is opining ME2 wider like you can on the PC. It's not like you are modding your system with fetures, just the game and Bioware does not care.

Ah ok so this just lets me put minrals, paragon points, ammo and hair files. Maybe one day someone will find a way to get all the casual outfits, at least I can get fem shep some good hair.

Question: I downloaded both the Gibbed Xbox Save Editor and the USB XTAF Xplorer archives. The link under "here" for the Save Editor took me to a Source file (is that the right one?) which dumps a whole load of directories and a .sln file on my desktop and no application that I can find and the XTAF Xplorer download extracts only a readme and USBXTAFGUI application which gives me an "Application failed to innitialize properly" error whenever I try to open it. Am I doing something wrong here? Did I not download the correct files?

What operating system are you using? The "here" link should only open 4 things that you MUST keep in the same folder(see picture in my opening post) and the XTAF should give you a folder with 2 things in it one of which is the USB XTAF and the other is a file called io.dll which you should never touch.

Fantastic, my greatest lament over owning the 360 version was missing out on all the mods; but now I don't have too.  Great post Darth, this is probably the single most useful thread I've seen on these forums.

You are a motherf*&king livesaver, Darth Trethon! THANK YOU!!!

K, please answer this or anybody: Can I do the same exact steps when modding my ME1 save files? I'm doing a new character in ME1, so are there different programs I need for that to happen?

Any answer is helpful, THANK YOU AND THANK YOU DARTH_TRETHON!
