Welcome to the most comprehensive guide imaginable in regards to the final mission of Mass Effect 2, also known as the Suicide Mission. It is the work of many forumites with some helpful hints by the BioWare developers themselves.

Let's start with a flowchart. Click the image to see a larger, easier to read version.

On Approach to the Collector Base

1. Are you going to rescue your crew on time?
From the moment the crew is kidnapped from the Normandy, you are on a timer that will affect how many of them will die depending on how many missions you complete from time of kidnapping to going through the Omega-4 Mass Relay. A mission is anything that will result in a "Mission Complete" screen at the end, so landing on hub worlds will have no affect on this timer. Doing missions on hub worlds could. Mining for minerals shouldn't.

2. Did you upgrade the armor for the Normandy?
The armor upgrade can be obtained either from asking Jacob about it or it will show up on the research terminal after completing Jacob's loyalty mission.

3. Did you upgrade the shields for the Normandy?
The shield upgrade can be obtained either from asking Tali about it or it will show up on the research terminal after completing Tali's loyalty mission. NOTE: Anyone on this list who is taken to fight the Oculus in the cargo hold cannot die from the shield failure, so move to the next person on the list.

Infiltrating the Collector Base

Posted Image - Indicates the squadmate is loyal.

1. Will the tech expert survive going through the vents?
Survival of the tech specialist requires picking the correct squadmate for both roles of tech specialist and fireteam leader. NOTE: This decision is made before the autosave as you step onto the Collector Base.

Pick one of the following Tech Specialists with one of the following Fireteam Leaders = [Survived!]

3. Will the Second Fireteam Leader survive?
Note: If the Second Fireteam Leader is by herself/himself, they will automatically survive if another squadmate had died during the walk through the seeker swarms.

Pick one of the following Fireteam Leaders = [Survived!]

4. Will the escorted crew make it back to the Normandy?
Note: If you only have 4 squadmates surviving at the time you must pick the escort, you will be unable to pick an escort.

5. Will the squadmates hold the line?
Before meeting the Final Boss, Miranda will ask you to pick the final two squadmates to go with you while everyone remaining will mount a defense at the second door. Who you leave behind is just as important as who you take with you: a poor defense could lead to some squadmates dying. Note: The following is a general guideline assuming the majority of your crew is loyal. A guaranteed success requires a "Hold the Line" score of 2.0 which is described in detail here.

Note: If all you were interested in was knowing how to keep everyone alive, you can stop. You're done. Guide over. This section will only serve to confuse you. Its existence is solely for the use of those interested in orchestrating particular outcomes.

Collector Homeworld, Hold the Line!

"Hold the Line" is what fellow forum posters have come to call the final defense at the second door, where Shepard leaves all the remaining squadmates while off to confront the final boss. Like the previous specialist roles during the mission, there are certain squadmates who are better suited for the defense than others. However, being a strong defender is only one aspect of the overall determination of squadmate deaths in this section, so you will need to read this section carefully if you're having issues here.

Note: If all you're interested in achieving is a perfect survival rate, leave the strongest defenders to Hold the Line. That's the easiest way to go about it and spares you having to calculate averages.

[Hold the Line] Defense Ranks
Note: Knowing the defense rank is only necessary for a more detailed calculation of the Hold the Line Score discussed later in this section.

[Hold the Line] Point Value Averages
Every squadmate brings a value to the defense and they get a +1 bonus if they're loyal. To calculate the Hold the Line Average Score, we add the values for each squadmate who is being left to Hold the Line and then divide that total by the number of squadmates at the battle. Using this average, you can determine how many squadmates are going to die (if any) while they Hold the Line. How many squadmates are at the defense will alter what average is needed to meet different death rate requirements.

Ensuring everyone's survival is all about meeting the proper defense score average. This average is 2.0.

     http://social.biowar...4217/110829.jpg Less than 2.0 = [Death]

Note: At least one person always survives Holding the Line unless the average is 0 or they're the only defender with a value less than 2.0. If the one person who survived Holding the Line is the only surviving squadmate from the whole mission, the game will play it as if everyone had died. This is because you need at least 2 surviving squadmates for Shepard to live.

Erm, Maelon's flowchart still suffers from the same mistake Ecael made about Grunt and Samara/Morinth being on the Shield death list even though there is too many people in front for it to occur :P ;)

Am I right in thinking those 'plans' are to include the list about who argues over the decision and who is grabbed/grabs Shep at the end that you made here ;) (bookmarked it the other week in prep for my PS3 playthroughs :) )

All of those can be not recruited, except Garrus, and a duo from the Tali-Thane-Samara/Morinth trio. Garrus and one of the duo can be taken to fight the Oculus, so Grunt or Samara can die.

I had a non loyal miranda and a loyal jack hold the line, I did do Miranda mission though. So, was that a glitch. As I understand it, I would have been good to go if Miranda had been loyal but she wasn't.

I'm glad you posted this Using this it's possible to at least SOMEWHAT manipulate who lives and dies. This'll be useful for my "incompetent Shepard" run. where as many people die as possible but Shepard still lives.

Now...Time to experiment.

Wrong, me and Pacifien already discussed this in the previous one and came to the conclusion that Ecael had made a mistake.

Yes other than Garrus you don't have to recruit the ones above in that list, but you HAVE to recruit at least 2 of them to fill up the 8 squadmates list and oh look, al the ones on that list above Grunt are in that set of people that need to be recruited ;)

So with Grunt birthed, besides Garrus you HAVE to recruit 2 from either Kasumi, Tali, Thane,Samara or Zaeed. which means even if you take 2 of them to fight the Occulus one of the other ones will die BEFORE Grunt. So neither Grunt or Samara/Morinth should be on that list because you can't kill them off there. Come on dude, ya know your talking to a pro of the Suicide Mission ;)

At least Grunt can die for sure. Example:

Kasumi - not downloaded
Legion - not activated
Tali - not recruited
Thane - to Oculus
Garrus - to Oculus
Zaeed - not downloaded
Grunt - DIES
Samara/Morinth - stays.

I'm not sure if the game will require you to activate Grunt, if you don't want to recruit Tali or Legion in that set-up. If it will not, and Grunt may be left not activated in that set-up, then Samara/Morinth dies.

What I determined was that Jack couldn't be on the shield death list, but Grunt can, as demonstrated by Zulu.

What I can't figure out is Samara/Morinth, because the game requires there be at least 8 squadmates to start the mission. You can eliminate four from the list by not recruiting them somehow and then another two by taking them to the Oculus. Whichever combination I use, it won't get me to Samara/Morinth.

However, there is something odd about this post from Ecael when the initial testing for this sequence was being conducted. This is pre-Kasumi, and there's mention of Samara dying from lack of shields. Ecael also mentions this is unlikely to happen in a normal game.

Now I know Ecael made extensive use of the Gibbed Save Game Editor. I suspect that Samara's death is coded into that sequence and accessed through manipulation of the editor. If my XBox 360 wasn't such a chore to use these days, I'd try to test this.

The small piece of note is missing regarding the second fire team leader. They say, that if you already have few enough people remaining by the "Long Walk" section, and 2nd fire team consists only of its leader, and your biotic bubbler is bad, so that one of your squadmates dies to the swarms, the 2nd fire team leader will survive, even if he/she is "bad". Presumably it is so to have at least one guy to "hold the line".

I actually did note it in item #3 of this part of the guide as well as mention the inability to pick an escort if you have too few squadmates to cover your roles. I didn't mention it to Maelon because I'm under the impression the more complicated the flowchart gets, the less likely people will bother to look at it. If someone were truly serious about killing off certain squadmates, I'd like to think they'd read the more comprehensive section of the guide. I'd like to think that, but...

Oh, my bad, sorry!

I think I wasn't expecting the notes to come before the main information.

Anyway, how is the escort choice withdrawn? Does the "I'll send somebody with you" line simply disappear, or Dr. Chakwas doesn't even request the escort?

Why is Ecael's thread locked and this one made?

In an effort to organize the guide into a more readable fashion beginning with the addition of the flowchart. I'd rather not keep altering Ecael's posts as I was uncomfortable doing so in the first place.

Just one quick comment: I just, and I mean, like just now, beat Mass Effect 2.

I read this guide (well, the other one), and went crazy and confused for the Hold The Line part. You see, I got both Zaeed and Kasumi and I also got everyone loyal, including them. The thing is, I never got asked to put someone to Hold The Line. I don't remember the exact words, but Miranda said something like: "Just pick your teammates for the final part of the mission. The rest of the team will hold the line."

Shepard asks for a status report, and Jack answered something like they shouldn't worry, they've got everything under control (not exact words; don't even remember if she even meant that). So, I chose Miranda and Thane (I like to play with members from the game covers [like Garrus and Ashley in the first game]) to crack that pitiful Human-Reaper, and Zaeed, Jack, Jacob, Garrus, Legion, Grunt, Kasumi, Samara and Tali (you don't have to choose, which means they all would easily hold the line [Hehe, reference to Captain Kirrahe, just awesome to have played the first game!]).

Anyways, I don't know if you just omitted it from the guide just because it was irrelevant or what, but I think it should be mentioned anyways. That is, unless I hit a bug or something, which I hope was not the case. What I mean is, putting in a note saying that, if you got everyone and they were all loyal, you can forget about the Hold The Line, and just beat the Human-Reaper ass.

In any case, this was another awesome game. Magnificent. Now I don't know what else to play until Mass Effect 3. I usually play all the games of a saga one after the other, as to keep up some history and not losing any with memory, but I guess this one deserved the slip.

Keep it up, BioWare!
