#20416213 26th August Suicide Mission

Posté par xelander sur 30 juillet 2016 - 05:31 dans Multiplayer

I hope this is exactly what everyone who feels hurt/angry/disappointed will do. You might annoy them with an orchestrated shitpost effort, but nothing can hurt them back as effectively as a drop in sales that can be explained by nothing other than shutting down the forum. Normally I don't give into such hateful thinking but the dark side got me this time they deserve it.

I was saving this for another post I had in the works (months from now), but now it seems it won't come to pass, so here:

I've given praises where praises were due and have provided constructive criticism where I saw such was needed.

I can't control others actions, only my own. So if somebody disrespects me and actively destroys a bond long time in the making I shall respond in the negative - either their discomfort will spur them to change themselves for the better, or they won't and as such they will suffer the full consequences of their actions. I am fine either way.

This isn't how we planned this mission, but this is where we're at:

The dumbfucks at Bioware/EA have decided to cut loose their most loyal and enduring fanbase. We shall respond in kind. They've made the mistake of leaving the SWTOR forums online after Doomsday.

Come the 26th, we shall shitpost, bomb and derail every forum and subforum left alive.

I don't know if the rEApers can feel the sting of our wallets, but we'll damn sure gonna give them the opportunity.

if we ever play another of their games, we shall not pay for it.

They've got nothing more to say to us?

How'bout...

GOODBYE.

Dafuq?!!

Is it the 1st of April or something?

We don't come here often, so we'll close the vibrant space where our fans can communicate with each other and feed off each other's passion for our games (thereby increasing purchases of games and DLCs, spreading word-of-mouth advertisement for BW's products, etc. etc.) What a completely asinine move...

Fuq that sh!t. If I ever want to play another BW game, I'm pirating it.

#20381759 How to Deal with Phantoms - Adepts [Video]

Posté par xelander sur 12 juillet 2016 - 06:56 dans Multiplayer

@ OP

If you want to put up a guide series on how to deal with phantoms, perhaps your first part should describe the peculiarities of phantoms themselves - on/off-host shenanigans, sync-kill mode, palm blaster vs. melee behaviour and how each is triggered, penetration distance for double/triple hits, shield-gate damage thresholds for Gold/Plat, staggering, etc. Going into detail about each adept's specifics after that would make much more sense and would be more beneficial for the casual reader.

I would also advise against showcasing tactics with lolcolyte/Venom - any kit at level 1 can deal with phantoms with those weapons. By all means, include a section about stagger and which weapons are capable of it, but stick it in the general phantom post; the adepts section of your guide should focus on what is specific about their power set, dodge, shields, etc.

As it is, you simply provide a set of instructions to be followed blindly, and not a very versatile one, at that. You can do better.

Posté par xelander sur 20 juin 2016 - 05:08 dans Multiplayer

Yeah, I know I'm being very heretical. But one day when I get this challenge done and upload the vid, yall will have the chance to see just how bad I suck with it, and that I have every reason to hate it. I can't hit a damn thing with it! I try to shoot at their feet, at their face, short range, long range, nothing works. No matter what I try, only about 1/3 of my shots does anything. At least that's what it feels like, hurr durr. When I watch vids of other people using it, it's every bit as godly as advertised. But when I have to use it...

Don't sweat it. I suck with it, too. Drinks are on me at the next club meeting. Give me a trusty Claymore any day.

In fact, I sucked with it so much that I switched to Scorpion as a primary for my Platinum run of Hold the Line. And took it on the first attempt.

#20335284 Looking for suggestions on the best build for me?!?

Posté par xelander sur 19 juin 2016 - 06:32 dans Multiplayer

Hi Folks:

First and foremost, let me explain who I am and therefore my corresponding style of play;

I am old man at the age of 69 who isn’t very quick on the draw so to speak. Plus, I am on a PC. As a result I am not adept to instinctively knowing where all the keys are and my reaction time isn’t the best either. That means my melee is slow to use. In addition, I very bad at backing up or rolling out of harm’s way.

Secondly, I have been playing as a Human female Adept for quite some time now and more often than not when I am casting biotics I tend to hit all three corresponding keys simultaneously, while firing my weapon at the same time.  As result I miss out on a lot of biotic explosions.

Thirdly, I am somewhat of a bull—in that I tend to charge head long into bosses. So, I tend to die a lot.

Finally, as for weapons I have been using the following weapons:

a.)    M-9 Tempest X - w/magazine upgrade  and the SMG Recoil System 1

b.)    M-5 Phalanx X – w/high caliper barrel and the Pistol Power Magnifier II

(The Acolyte III gets me in trouble because of its priming first: Or, it is just that I don’t know exactly how to use it effectively.)

In closing, I would appreciate any and all suggestions as to which characters and their respective builds that would be best suited for my play style. Thank you.

First, if your manual dexterity is lacking, train for it! Unless you have physical disability, you'll still make gains even in old age if you exert yourself, albeit not at the faster rate younger people have. The Spartans do not ask how many the enemy are, but where they are.

To get started on the right path - if some keys are too far away or too near to each other you can remap them from the game settings - experiment a few times on Bronze and see what works best for you. And don't let the frenzied pace of the game make your mind frenzied, Remember that slow is smooth, smooth is fast and fast is lethal.

With that out of the way, as with any game, it's a matter of the right balance of offensive power and survivability. Given you particulars, you might benefit more from playing a game of anticipation - biding your time and killing stuff while exposing yourself minimally.

Regarding survivability:.

- learn about right-hand advantage in shooters

- focus on developing specific map and enemy awareness - where enemies spawn, where you are relatively exposed/safe, which wave has what threats. This is achieved mostly through experience, but having your attention on noticing these things will help.

- use builds with full fitness, or at least up to level 5 for the shield-recharge bonus.

- use powers that stagger and crowd control - all the starting Vanilla humans (except Infiltrators) have them - Singularity, Warp, Throw, Overload, every Human Vanguard power staggers as well.

- the Novaguard has a lot of invincibility frames when Nova-canceling. This is a rather key-intensive character, but the action is repetitive, so once you commit it to muscle memory, it will be easier. It's one of the tankiest kits in the game, when done right. Do it while hosting, though, otherwise lag will screw with Nova-canceling.

- Infiltrators have the highest survivability in team games, so use them as your crutch in the beginning. Cloak is almost a win button.

- Kits with Energy Drain can refill their shields and kits with powers offering Damage Reduction(Reave, Tech Armor and similar) are also more forgiving

- Generally there is a balance between agility and high health - if you are too early in your dexterity progress to utilize higher agility, use higher health kits - Turians, Batarians, etc.

Regarding offense:

- you want to expose yourself minimally, so use weapons which kill with less shots or stagger the enemy. One shot - one kill (OSOK) is ideal.

- some weapons have innate stagger- Scorpion, Venom, Graal, Kishock, Acolyte (aim just before the feet of the target), Disciple or weapons that deliver lots of damage in one shot - Claymore, bolt-action sniper rifles, Talon (which is a mini-shotgun anyway), etc.

- once you have high Grenade Capacity, kits with grenades become obscene.

- once again, debilitating powers are good, then focus on debuffs - Cryo Blast, Proxy mine, Warp, etc.

Recommended weapons from the more affordable ones:

Carnifex(as soon as you have it above lvl 6 or 7), Mantis, Widow, Claymore, Graal, GPS.

Some builds:

TSol

This is the weapons master in this game. Makes even shitty weapons look OK.

One you get him, the Salarian Infiltrator is one of the easiest kits to survive with:

Defensive

Offensive

Batarian Adept

Destroys armor. And everything else.

Human Adept

Power build

Use Sinuglarity-Shockwave-Warp cycles. Let Singularity expire before recasting it. You get 3 biosplosions on a target every 8 seconds that way. Never take Radius Shockwave, it's bugged on PC.

Weapon build

Use Singularity for crowd control, Warp for debuff and Shockwave for detonating.

Engineer

Infiltrator

Sentinel

Vanguard

Tank and medic, if you master Nova-canceling and if you host. This will be frustrating in the beginning, so work your way up to it.

And finally, the champ:

HSol

The only thing better than Claymore is double-tap Claymore.

#20275400 Female Main Character can we have a realistic body this time?

Posté par xelander sur 26 mai 2016 - 01:37 dans General Discussion

Lol I love how this has turned into a muscle thread

This thread is about realistic body type of a female soldier. Discussion of muscle is a necessity, though perhaps not an in-depth one.

I'm not totally sold on the myofibrillar vs. sarcoplastic hypertrophy deal. I think we need more research as far as that goes. Muscle growth is first and foremost an adaptive process to strain (which is why progressive overload is the only thing that works). I'm not sure what the evolutionary benefit of pumping cells full of water in response to increasing strain is - to follow the Darwin allusion.

More research is always better. I would conjecture that there is no evolutionary benefit to sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. If all processes were beneficial, then we would never suffer negative consequences. I think it's about how the body's adaptive stress response is triggered - high intensity low-rep exertions trigger the best response (myofibrilar H., i.e. more strength), whereas lower intensity higher-rep exertions are more system-taxing than system-stimulating. Too much of a good thing and so on... To amplify this into absurdity, I have lifted 200x20 kg (for work) and have also deadlifted 30(6x5) x 125 kg (that's an average value here, the progression was a bit more complex, from ~135 to ~115kg), which is roughly the same work. You can guess which one has been more beneficial.

In any case, when it comes to strength and correct bio-mechanics, my money is always on the powerlifters/gymnasts.

As far as functional training, I just think it's too nebulous a term. Functional training for a boxer is different than for a strongman is different than for gymnast. You're always going to have some trade-off no matter how you approach training because you can't be functional for all roles. A boxer is never going to have to worry about keeping his spine neutral to preserve it while lifting something very heavy off the floor (as per a deadlift), a strongman is never going to have to worry about complex chain of movements needed to maximise the force of a cross.

I think we are speaking of different things. I am referring to general athletic performance of the body, whereas you mean skill-specific performance. The higher the former, the better the latter. You just have to find the cutoff point of diminishing returns. IMO, many people aim below the real cutoff point.

#20275204 Female Main Character can we have a realistic body this time?

Posté par xelander sur 26 mai 2016 - 10:52 dans General Discussion

All things being equal a bigger muscle is a stronger muscle. Realistically a 130 pound woman just won't be as strong as a 170 pound man. Unless they're a cyborg, like Shepard, so that's not really a problem.

...

Bodybuilders tend to go into sarcoplasmic hypertrophy where strength gains are minimal as opposed to myofibrilar hypertrophy, which is what powerlifters get. While you do explicitly postulate "all things being equal" and I agree in that exact context, I felt the need to made the above point, since the common use of bigger = stronger is fallacious.

"Functional Training" is like "inner beauty" - it can mean anything so it means nothing.

Perhaps in the social circles where you spend your time that is true, i have no way of knowing. For me, Functional training is the first, in certain sense the only training. We live in a world based on merit; if you can't get sh!t done, you don't survive, to paraphrase good ole Darwin. If you don't teach your body to execute soundly the complex combinations of pushing, pulling, twisting and standing up that life requires, it doesn't matter how pretty your muscles look. Once you are familiar with the correct biomenchanics of those movements, then it becomes about developing strength, strength endurance, power, speed, agility and improving the very specific skills that your sport/activity requires. This is what I understand when Functionality comes up.

Oh I don't think anyone is delusional enough to think that their thicker waists are made of solid muscle, if that's what you're implying. I thought the original person who made it was mostly referring to the core muscles in the lower back and spine. The image also mentions that they do really care about being fat free and that having fat is common in these kinds of training, since that isn't their focus.

In comparison, bodybuilder always strive for a very narrow waist and wider upper body which is seen an an ideal in such competitions, as far as I know. So relatively speaking wouldn't a strongman have a much larger waists than a bodybuilder who is specifically trying to trim down his waist.

Gotcha. I found that part of the image severely misleading, so I felt the need to elucidate. After all, we owe it to ourselves as men to use correct arguments when we defend the stance we take. :)

#20275107 Female Main Character can we have a realistic body this time?

Posté par xelander sur 26 mai 2016 - 08:50 dans General Discussion

Also strong men have greater core muscles than bodybuilders but unless I'm wrong, they aren't necessarily bigger than bodybuilders when it comes to upper body. In fact body builder generally have a bigger upper body in terms of bicep size, shoulders etc despite the difference in strength.

 Strongman-vs-Bodybuilder.jpg

"They have very thick waists because all the core muscles right through the torso are developed to prevent etc., etc."

There are not enough facepalms in the whole internet for that.

The medical term for the core muscles (with the possible exception of the erector spinae) is "flat muscles". If that was muscle underneath, then the potential for cross-sectional growth of core muscles would exceed that of any other muscle by several orders of magnitude! That is fat, not muscle. The reason that powerlifters / strongman competitors develop comparatively thicker waists is because their exercises do not require them to be agile (which is when lower levels of fat are beneficial); they do not engage in prolonged high intensity efforts and as such the shredding benefits of HIIT do not apply; and finally because their goals do not require them to have highly-defined muscles, so their food regimen is also not very strict. If they had to cut as much as bodybuilders do, they would have a bit bigger waist but only to a very, very, very small degree - because that would be mostly the stabilizing lower back muscles.

If you are looking at the bodies with most functionality (especially the wide range that combat might require) I suggest the Olympic gymnasts.

In fact, I was going to post here yesterday that Missy Peregrim in "Stick It" has an excellent athletic body that I wouldn't mind seeing used as a model for female Ryder (or better yet, her stunt doubles, the real gymnasts).
