says hooray: I have an author using the pseudonym Jewelz who will be inflicting yet another terrible urban romance/erotica/fiction novel on me.

@Tony: It's not, but we just heard back from the author who - genius move here - apparently copied everything over from a PDF and plopped it into Word, which explains the incorrect hard returns and incorrect page breaks. However, moving things from the PDF doesn't explain the messed-up dialogue, the atrocious punctuation, the capitalization issues, the grammar issues, OR the author having all of her dialogue (for all 173 pages) incorrectly stuck together.

She's going to try to fix things again (yeah, because that went so well last time). Whatever...as long as I get this thing back with properly separate dialogue and no incorrect page breaks/hard returns, then I don't care. I'm just totally going to avoid reading more of it than I already have. :P

says as if that OTHER guy who was too stupid/senile to be aware that he didn't actually have footnotes at any point in time was bad enough, I get another dummy today who is causing me extra work - thanks, all of you idiot authors out there!

There are three things I hate in this world: stupid people, stupid people who can't follow my super-simple directions, and stupid people who cause me extra and completely unnecessary work because they're too stupid to follow my super-simple directions.

I could be doing my main story quest in FF XIV right now, but no, thanks to this guy, between one-two hours of what should be relaxation time on a Sunday will now be sucked up formatting his book from scratch (and it's not like he's a good writer, so this will be even less enjoyable than it was the first time).

And I just went over the ALLEGEDLY EDITED manuscript and found between what I now estimate as being 900-1,000 errors. Don't say you edited your work when you haven't fixed a single f---ing thing. If you had edited your work, you would've fixed ALL your mistakes or paid a professional to do it (since you're clearly too f---ing incompetent to do it yourself).

says this is a new low! One of my idiot authors apparently didn't notice that he didn't have footnotes after EIGHT WHOLE PROOFS!!!!!

I'm sure that all smart people know that you have EITHER footnotes or endnotes but not both (because it would be stupid and redundant to enter the same information twice). Great, author, if you'd wanted your endnotes to be footnotes, then perhaps you should have entered them into the footnote boxes where they belonged?

Why the f--- is it that you're asking me this EIGHT PROOFS LATER???? This is the idiot whose edits were so bad that I spent three hours and thirty minutes trying to clean things up last time (after giving an estimate where I was hopeful that it would only take an hour and thirty minutes to complete work).

And even after all the work I had to do, he later comes back and says he's amazed at how many mistakes got through - like how he accidentally changed Adde to Mary TWICE. Really? I can only catch so many errors (typos, grammar, AND punctuation errors), and frankly, I can't be expected to know the names of your bloody ancestors OR to care about your ancestors (all of whom I am currently cursing because I got stuck with this stupid family genealogy from hell).

honestly can't believe that BOTH Ph.D.s that she got stuck with made the same stupid mistakes in their edits!!!!

    AtreiyaN7
I had to reject Ph.D. #1's edits yesterday because he couldn't fill out the damned edit boxes properly. Apparently, HE thought that instead of following directions to enter the complete text in both boxes, he should enter instructions in one box and mangled corrections with MORE instructions in the other box). I get Ph.D. #2's edits today, and basically, she did the same damned thing.

Dear Idiot Ph.D.s everywhere, when the instructions say to enter the complete existing text and the complete correction, how about you DO THAT???? I DON'T WANT YOUR F---ING INSTRUCTIONS TO FIND <X> WORD AND CHANGE IT TO <Y> - JUST ENTER THE F---ING SENTENCES LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO!

AND IF YOU ENTER A F---ING STUPID ELLIPSIS IN YOUR CORRECTION THAT I KNOW ISN'T SUPPOSED TO GO IN THE BOOK, I WILL INSERT IT IF YOU FAIL TO FOLLOW THE F---ING DIRECTIONS.

How about no to that one? How about YOU stop asking me to do insane and stupid things? How about YOU never again use DejaVu Serif 24 pt for your stupid Prologue with the hyphenation turned off, resulting in hideous spacing issues that I can't fix because you A) chose a stupidly large font size and B) stupidly insisted on the hyphenation being turned off.

So, you decided to use Century Gothic for your novel - and THEN you decided that you wanted Sveva AS for the headers and for your chapter titles????????

  • Photo de AtreiyaN7
    AtreiyaN7
All I have to say is that if you don't know what those fonts look like, you should google them to get an idea of why it's totally weird to put them together. I can live with Century Gothic for the main text (still weird for a fiction novel, FYI), but I think the Sveva AS was a terrible choice as a supplemental font for the chapter titles, etc.

There were only three edits last time, so I sucked it up and did them but issued my warning. The instructions were clear and simple. This time I get ELEVEN PAGES of complete crap (well, the last page was blank, so let's make that ten actual pages of fail and one page of blessed nothingness :P ).

Instead of entering the COMPLETE existing I.S. text, I get her stupid instructions mixed with individual words from the actual sentence that she wants changed. The only complete text she entered is the corrections. Really? I'm supposed to find your EXISTING sentences based on your corrections that TOTALLY DO NOT MATCH the existing text?

Grrrr - the AR just e-mailed me back AFTER I sent an irate e-mail to her and my boss about how bad this edit form is. I am now insisting that this moronic twit of an author make absolutely SURE that she uses the Word copy of the IP_V3 proof that I am providing for her. So help me God, I don't trust this moron to work on her old manuscript - plus, it would negate the two previous rounds of edits that I inserted.

@spork: I'm sure that you're a cut above the authors I get stuck with - your sentences actually make sense and are readable, which I can't say about this loopy author and her loopy book about Miranda (and for anyone reading this, sorry, this isn't about Mass Effect Miranda :P ). There are SOME writers who self-publish that have talent or aren't horrible - it's just that this author is a bit more typical of what I've had to put up with lately.

Case in point: Andy Weir self-published The Martian initially, yet it was a really good novel with a great main character and later got picked up by Crown Publishing. It basically turned into a giant hit and was made into a movie, which was also a hit. Speaking of The Martian, I finally picked up the blu-ray since I'm a fan of the book, and the movie was surprisingly awesome as well! Thank you so much for not sucking when making the movie, Ridley Scott!
