Not sure if and when I'll be able to get Inquisition, so I may end up laying low on the boards for the next few weeks.

Thanks for the well wishes. Mostly, the issue is that I may not have enough time to play the game in order to justify the initial cost. But hopefully I'll get around to it. I'd also be very interested to hear your impressions whenever you get around to playing it.

Big O- fyi, I'm putting my first impressions of my playthrough on my personal group page. You can find it through the link in my sig. First impressions, mechanically and with the presentation of the story so far, are positive. (Mega-spoilers within, though, obviously.)

Thanks for letting me know. I've only looked at the first of your entries to avoid major spoilers, but your commentary is extremely helpful in getting a sense of what the game is all about. And your character sounds pretty similar to the kind of character I would have probably run with my first playthrough, so that's nice. :)

Starting to doubt that college students are the best audience for Singer's "Famine, Affluence and Morality," seeing as most of them are already at the level of the global poor.

Well, you're an adjunct, aren't you? If anybody's qualified to do it, you are.

I would have you know that I am the Wykeham Professor of Logic at Oxford University. :) But yes, I'm an adjunct; we comprise over 50% of all faculty members at US colleges and universities, which doesn't paint a pretty picture.

Nonsense. Starving academics are always so attractively thin, and do just about anything for food. [/troll]

Made the mistake of absent-mindedly assigning Putnam's "Psychological Predicates" for my Intro class. Will try not to repeat that one.

The paper is in the anthology I'm using for my class, and it's a classic in the field, so I figured, why not? Unfortunately, it's unreadable for undergraduates: "A Description of S, where S is a system, is any true statement to the effect that S possesses distinct states S-1, S-2 . . . S-n, which are related to one another and to the motor outputs and sensory inputs by the transition probabilities given in such-and-such a Machine Table."

Five years ago, I might have understood that better. Now I just remember old math I can no longer do. Sorry. :p

Just finished Tomb Raider and enjoyed it. Haven't played any point-and-click adventures in a while so, I'm moving on to Beneath a Steel Sky.ky.

Going for a more topical approach in my Introduction to Philosophy class this semester; we'll see how it goes.

Nice. (I guess. ;)) What kind of load have you got?

Four courses, mostly at different places. I'm teaching Bioethics, Intro to Philosophy, Contemporary Moral Issues and Critical Thinking (although I'm not really in love with the book for that one). I've taught most of those before, but I'm making some changes to my syllabi, so we'll see how it goes. :)

Pending some cosmetic revisions, I just got a paper accepted for publication. Yay!

Awesome! Congratulations. :)
Peer-reviewed, right? Web or print?

Thanks! It's a peer-reviewed print journal specializing in epistemology, which is most of what I do, so that worked out well.
