Whew, finally finished the game - what happened before the final battle and what happened after the credits was more interesting than the fight itself - heh.

Uh, there are revelations at a certain point close-ish to the end of the game - and then more revelations that are piled on (along with more mysteries). Boy, that last one is kind of a doozy (and leaves you with a reallllllly big mystery). And to answer that earlier question, apparently all my gear was level 16 or lower because I hadn't bothered to upgrade for a while. I just sort of thought that I'd get around to it eventually - heh.
