I know - it's all rather a mess (interesting primarily on a technical/design level). Since the Engineers' suits and helmet were, well, suits and helmets, I still don't see how this became part of the xenomorph look. I'm guessing that the death ritual at the beginning sowed genetic/organic material into the Earth's early ecosystem (that scene at the beginning). As for what happened on mystery planet X, I think those worm-like creatures on the planet (I saw them in that room...
