actually gave a fail author detailed bullet points on the differences between "lightning" and "lightening" and even said all three instances of "lightening" needed to be corrected...

I told the AR that if this dipstick doesn't listen to me, I'm not going to bother repeating myself or make further efforts to help him. He can then suffer the consequences of looking like an idiot who can't spell (which he deserves because he IS an idiot who can't spell). It's like he has to throw an unnecessary "e" into every word, as if he's trying to be faux British or something.

lol I know some people who are ESL who keep spelling the same words wrong even after I point them out, but I suppose it's worse if you're trying to get published.

Yeah, my mom was from China and had a tough time with English. However, this author has literally no excuse for any errors, because he is (as far as I know) a native speaker of English. He's a white dude (saw his pic), so I'm quite sure that he's not from China like my mom was.
