An argument overheard in the store: what did # originally mean? I feel old.

  • I think it used to mean ‘pound’, but I never knew if it was for sterling or weight and no idea why Americans would put it on a telephone.

    I think it's originally been used as a number sign (at least here where I'm from), which one of the boys was saying. The other one was like "dude, it means 'hashtag'" and then the first one said "I mean, before Twitter, it mean number" and that's when the argument really started going. It got pretty hilarious quickly: "It's a Twitter thing" "Yeah, but before that it meant 'number'" "No, it means 'hashtag'!"...
