People, i'm not thaaat much savyy on PCs, so i'd like to ask for some counseling on a matter, here goes:

I'm thinking on swapping from Win XP SP3 to Win7. I don't intend to modify my PC in any other manner (maybe install another 2GBs of ram, and a better video card, but not now) .

So i ask to our friends here: Are you happy with Win7?

I'm happy with Windows 7. It seems to process things faster than Vista/XP.

I'm not, Have nothing but issues with my older games on it (some won't even run right unless I do plenty of extra work!).

But I've also seen plenty of people talk about how they havn't had an issue since they've installed it, while others like me have had nothing but problems!

I think alien ware sent it to me for free as a sick joke on their part! :(

If you can afford it, take the upgrade. I would too if I could afford it. For now I'm stuck with XP64. Besides, Microsoft is stopping support for XP in 2011. You'll be forced to upgrade eventually if you don't want your PC to be open to any exploits crackers come up with. I don't run Windows 7 myself, but one of my friends does and is very pleased with it. She's only had issues running the original Neverwinter Nights so far.

I love Win7. It has repaid me for all the crap I had to put up with from Vista. If at all possible, you want to do the upgrades (RAM especially) as soon as you can.

However.... I did cheat. I did not *upgrade* to Win7. I bought a new hard drive and set up a dual-boot, which has worked wonderfully for me. The clean install was painless, and new hard drives are cheaper than ever before. Your mileage may vary.

Oh yes, this reminds me. Don't ugprade at all if you won't have at least 4GB RAM in that PC or it's going to get ugly at times. Win7 is needier than XP.

Windows 7 for me. XP was great in it's day but people just need to let the old OS die. XP is not even supported anymore by Microsoft.

Ah, so those updates I had the last week or so didn't happen?
XP is still supported, and the support is dropped next year.

If you like too play older games (i.e. good games) and like your 4 gigs* of memory to be used by something other than your OS, stick with WinXP. If you like shiny GUIs and compulsively buy broken software because it's new, get Win7.

*Edit: should have said 2 gigs.

It's good they extended your support, but it was supposed to be ended months ago. I used to be a die hard XP person, and then went to Vista. I hated the bloat from Vista but like the interface for it and some of the added abilities for it. Then Win7 comes and for me it is the best of both worlds no bloat, and great for gaming or anything you really want to do. The only game I have ever had issues with with Win7 was DAO everth other game runs like a dream including ME2.

@Chan, you might get some increased smoothness. I know someone with a rig similar to mine (and it's similar to yours, except a bootload more in the graphics department), and he runs 7 (or is it Vista? I forget) fine.

New GPU, 2GB of RAM and I think you'd be sorted for some time - even for XP.

OMG that is the one thing I hate about Vista.. I didn't know 7 used less resources.. Yea, that's at the top of my PC Upgrade list.. right above more ram and a new cpu :) lol

Sorry gloom but have to seriously disagree there. 7  only uses approx 700mb of resources (ram) to run compared to xp's 550 (on average), also cpmpared to Vistas up to 1gb....

7 will run fine on 2gb ram....of course, depending on the game resukts will differ, but if the pc itself is not changing, then xp > 7 will not really impact on system performance Posted Image

Ah. I thought it was more of a hog than that. My mistake then. That uses waaaay less than I thought, really. Kinda makes my PC's 8GB RAM overkill. :P

There are 2 types of support from Microsoft: Maintstream and Extended.

Mainstream support ended last year. Extended support continues until April 2014.

Extended support gives you security updates to all users, but non-security hot fixes are only provided to companies that have signed support contracts with MS.

Basically this means it's sitll supported for the average user until 2014.

That being said, I've installed Win 7 64 bit on my new rig. Haven't had much of a chance to use it though, due to various factors, but in the very near future (likely next week), it will become my default gaming rig.
