UPDATE (6/27): Added Nakmor Ambassador and Krogan extranet addict (thanks Mesina2!)

In Mass Effect 1, we were given the impression that most krogan were violent mercenaries except for Wrex.

Most of them made you want to headbutt them (before they headbutt you).

Wrex is HUNGRY.

In Mass Effect 2, we were introduced to Tuchanka, with many krogan that differ from the stereotype. Most of them
made you want to hug them instead. Now that krogan have become much more diversified, will we see vorcha or
batarians with different personalities in Mass Effect 3?

You know, I'm knee deep in an ME1 play-through, and I completely agree.

Not only were Krogan reduced from being hardened serious badasses, to adorable big boys playing with big toys, but I really noticed that Asari were seriously downgraded, and looked remarkably "simpler" and less featured.  Or maybe it's just 'cos I'm using the ultra-high res texture setting on the PC, but ME1 asari have a whole range of more subtle colorings to their skin, while also seems to glow with a pearlescent tint.  In ME2, Asari are almost monotoned in a near-matte appearance.  Asari look WAY better in ME1.

Did they go overboard? No.

As the Blood Pack and captain epic speech of ALILILILILILILILI show, there are still PLENTY of pissed Krogan to go around.

There are many Krogan, and they are unique... and that's f@cking
awesome.

Especially Epic Poetry Dude, And the Forebodingly Silver Tongued Emissary of the Thax, who literally made me stop what I was doing for 5 minutes.

More is better.

Aw man, potential father krogan was one of the cutest things in the game. For being the home planet of so-called bloodthirsty psychopaths, Tuchanka sure made me :3c a lot.

Also, Charr and his "I'll love our girls no matter what color they are", ****ING D'AWWWWW

Anecdote--my friend tried lying to Kargesh just to see what the outcome was. He felt so bad he reloaded.

I kinda like the Krogan in ME2, reminds me of the Orcs from Warcraft. Wrex (if he survived) is like Thrall leading a new era for their people.

I've always thought Krogan are cute... those little squishified faces and smiley mouths. They're the snuggliest army of intergalactic louts ever. Making half the wildlife of Tuchanka equally cute is just icing on the cake; deadly as all hell, but you still want to cuddle them while they're chewing your limbs off.

That's why it's all so dangerous there - you're too busy awwwww-ing to draw your weapons!

I don't have any problem with the krogan in Mass Effect 2. I actually found some of the krogan's dialogue on Tuchanka hilarious :P

I liked it.

I still thought the krogan held up to their theme of being hardasses. Klingons on steroids.

I just felt like I got to meet a few new krogans, is all.

I like the new Krogan a lot more. It makes them more believable to have a personality more than KILL-DEATH-RAGE. It also makes sense for the Krogan to be multifaceted on their homeworld. Most of the ones delt with in ME1 were mercs, criminals, and thugs.

There ARE Krogan citizens. To think that members of a race are all identical in temperment is somewhat unrealistic.

I think Bioware wanted the Krogan to be a "bad guy" race, but with Wrex as a squad member and their awesome appearance, people liked them too much, so eventually they made the ugly ass Batarians and Vorcha and made them as despicable as possible.

Actually the Vorcha are kind of cute, like goblin cute.

EDIT: perhaps the extent of watching their people fade from a great powerful empire to near out of existence is making the Krogan more weary and, dare I say, compassionate.

I think that the "adorable" twist on the krogan made them more interesting characters. The "hard badass war-loving" race has been done to death in fiction. I think that they're still funny jerks and lovable saints underneath the krogan exterior gives a lot of depth to the stereotype.

Good examples would be the poor krogan who watches vids of the Citadel on the extranet, and of course the krogan Scout.

Both are good points. (Except for the Vorcha part!)

Tuchanka would be empty if the Krogan truly showed no compassion for others.

Well... i never liked a species that's centered around a stereotype. For example the greedy and physically handicapped Volus (Edit: oops... that sounded very wrong. I only meant that i dont like the fact that all Volus are acting alike as they are greedy and all relying on other to do the dirty work. I like Volus, though). Likewise, making all Krogan grunting and constantly thinking about killing is a) boring after a while and B) an oversimplified and immature picture of a species/society.

In a large group of living beings there's always some variety. Also, they couldn't have survived their own evolution without a basic understanding of cooperation and rules of behavior. (There is an interesting pattern there, coincidently, in current hunting society like for example in Indonesia. They have their culture centered around "hunt". Manhood and success in life etc. is hunting themed. But according to Jared Diamond at least, they are actually much less involved in glamorous hunts than what you would think after listening to their tales. They mostly eat frogs and some birds and the stuff that their wifes collect from the local flora. For the Krogans the analogy would be that all like to talk about killing and explosions as part of cultural identity but in reality most make their living with mundane stuff too and live pretty peaceful.)

Bottom line: i think its all good if we see some nasty Krogan and some civilized.

You're joking right? The Consort ("Shi'ara?") and 90% of the Asari looked like a mix between puke and roadkill, Shiali being kind of cool and Liara and Benezia obviously looked okay. In ME2, most Asari look pretty okay, Morinth and Samara are, facially, the best looking females in the game (the model for Samara has a very special and beautiful face, while I never really liked Yvonne Strahovski and Miranda even more so has some bad facial modelling, and Jack looks okay in some scenes but pretty jagged and ugly in most.)

I find it amusing and ironic that the OP is complaining about the Krogan stereotype being debunked, and that he is doing so by holding up a quote from the first game where Wrex sarcastically dismisses the Krogan stereotype.
