EDIT: Mass Effect 2

I think I have tried everything I can think of before posting so maybe someone has a different idea...

When I click play from the launcher it goes to a black screen then gives me "windows has encountered a problem..." Now when I saw this I went and I disabled intro movies (tried both the -noblahblah switch and the renaming of intro movies) still the same result. I have updated drivers (multiple times), audio, ati, etc etc. I patched the game to 1.01, still nothing. I can't get anything past a black screen. I've set it to compatible with winxp sp3 and run as admin. My AA is set to override to none. It's very frustrating. Any ideas?

I notice you're both using DirectX 10 or later. I've read that starting with 10, they've segmented the DX libraries rather than making them all-in-one, and so installing/updating 10 or 11 doesn't necessarily take care of 9.

Therefore, you could try running the latest DX9 Updater. I would think the ME2 install would take care of it, but it could be worth a try.

tried it, downloaded a small (700kb) patch. Still no love, it'll open up (even when run from the binaries), it'll think for a sec, then crash out.

Given that nothing else in a PC matters when you have no video card, and a video chip doesn't count, omitting what you have is not helpful.  (Not to you, nor anyone who might be able to help.)

"Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9200, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, and HD 4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2."

Very basic discussion of video cards, video chips, and even of laptops' limits
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/519461

There will never, not ever, be any "fix" for anyone trying to run the
game without a proper gamers' video card (as per the system
requirements), that includes none of Intel's poor excuses for a video
device.

yeah so how about the rest of us then. What's the "fix" for us that meet or exceed the minimum--even the recommended requirements?

Sorry, there had not been anything that my own experience suggested was a useful comment until the confusion about newness making up for inadequacy.  It's neither the habit here, nor a practice I want to suggest for use here, but when you ask EA for official help, they want to see your DxDiag Reports.  In some forums, there are members whose experience allows them to see things in those reports that they can use to try some diagnostics.

Flem1, I suspect, may be among them:

Flem1's PC Hardware Group
social.bioware.com/group/151/

I will suggest that a visit to the appropriate Clean Boot page of the Microsoft site might be profitable.  Each Windows version has its own page of instructions for performing a Clean Boot procedure to determine which software they use is in conflict with a game.  You are shutting down such things as your AV (and that's a source for a lot of trouble), and your various IM services, also problematic, so shut off your system's internet connection as well.

To be fair, stray did not specify what video device he is using.. whether it is a graphics card or an integrated chip is unclear from his post.

I tried a clean boot following the instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796, but no luck. The error I am getting is,

General protection fault!

(this copies into your clipboard when it crashes.)

It looks very similar to the problem in this thread http://www.tomshardw...-effect-msvcr80 with the exception being that my game never worked to begin with, it just insta-crashes.

At this point I would suggest running a memtest86 as was suggested there, that is what I am going to try next followed by a clean OS install.

Given that from a game-playing perspective, NOTHING ELSE AT ALL is as important as the video CARD, then anyone who omits it from a list of his PC components is tantamount to admitting he / she has none at all (no, there is no onboard chip that qualifies to be described as a "Card", none, not one).  Maybe that seem harsh, but there is a price for being able to play the newer, better games, and the owners of PCs without actual video cards haven't paid the cost to join the fraternity.

ok, fixed it. I think the problem was having anti-virus software open when I installed the game ... I hate anti-virus software, wouldn't use the stupid garbage if my school didn't make me. ughhhhhh

well, at least it works now.

so yeah, if you have av software trying disabling/uninstalling it (I uninstalled) and then reinstalling ME2.

As a related sidenote is there a good way to view the .dmp files? I'm using windows debugger but the symbols are off so I can't interpret much.

I guess my question is just this, why is ME2 (d08.730): Access violation - code c0000005 (first chance) calling out null addresses? Since I don't have all the .pbd symbols I need I can't see where it's calling to. I can see through the call stack that the crash happens even before the music initialization. I can venture a guess and say that it's a driver issue, but which driver is it? My video drivers? those are up to date. I made damn sure of that. Ugh, I'm so damn frustrated!

So, you guys tried uninstalling your av software, then reinstalling the game right? Cause, I'm pretty sure that's what fixed mine... AV software seems to destroy parts of files without even telling you, like if you download D2D games with AV open the installers don't work at all.. for me at least..

What do your error messages look like? Is it this one http://people.ucsc.e...ffect2crash.jpg  or are you getting something else? Also do you have retail or steam?

I am getting the same problem, but I have not tried reinstalling the game after getting rid of antivirus yet, but I might have to do that.

My specs are:

Windows 7 64bit

Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 @ 2.13Ghz

8 GB Physical Memory

Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX

DirectX 10.0 (dxdiag says version 11)

It just crashes a few seconds after the game window is launched.

I'm using factory recommended driver software and a combination of installing and reinstalling and uninstalling of ME2, Video Drivers, Audio Drivers, Mice/Keyboard drivers. It's a pretty awesome process...

Speaking of which, if it's not a trade secret or anything of that nature does anyone know where I can get my hands on the LTCG-BioGame.pdb file so I can tell what it's looking for?

Well, the ultimate test if you have tried everything else would be to install a clean version of windows 7 and install nothing but video drivers and ME2.. could be done on a new partition if you want to preserve the old one. This would just be to find out if it is not working because of a software or hardware problem. (If it works, you had a software conflict.. if not, it's probably due to faulty hardware somehow..)

If you don't know how to make a new partition, right click on my computer, select manage. Select storage, disk management. Right click on the volume you want to split and select shrink, for just windows and ME2 you would wantaround 25 GB. You will then be able to install windows to the empty space.

You can download a windows 7 professional 32 bit iso here: http://msft-dnl.digi...4/X15-65804.iso

Youcould make a bootable dvd or usb drive of it with this: http://images2.store...SB-DVD-tool.exe

Kindof extreme but windows 7 installs relatively quickly... and you could just delete the partition afterwards. You don't need a product key to install, it won't insist on one for 30 days.. but you just want to test something so it's fine..

I figured out why my game was crashing! It was a disc reading problem during installation.
I decided to reinstall the game after messing with anti-virus, but when I started the installation I got an error saying some data was corrupted. This is not the first disc error I've had with this game, as the first
time I installed Mass Effect 2 the installer would not detect disc 2 at all. I ended up making an image file with daemon-tools and mounting it which worked, but then I got the crashes when trying to start the game.

This time I made an image out of the first disc aswell and installed the game using just the images, and the game seems to run fine.

I don't understand why daemon tools was able to read the discs though while the installer keept having trouble..

Thanks for the idea hago, but I would really rather avoid doing a fresh install or dual booting as that in itself has issues that I'd rather not deal with.
