Well that is just awful news. Thanks for the answer though. Also, sorry if you came here expecting a video of Shredder Ammo being really useful. I just now realized how the title of this thread makes it seem like I've figured out it's potential. It's a shame really, Thane is really good otherwise.

Better than armor piercing ammo? No.

Well yeah, but any/everything destroys veteran and below once you've got a good handle on the game.Average Gatsby wrote...

Don't dismiss it out of hand man, there aren't many niches that shredder can fill. I'll agree that ap is better and more versatile (duh), but on shield heavy missions shredder could shine! (I seriously doubt it though)Tlazolteotl wrote...

Anyway, all RPGs have a certain few skills/spells that are basically worthless when it comes to min/max'ing on the hardest difficulties, ME2 is no different. Shredder and fortification happen to be those skills in this game.

This. My nephew gets a lot of use out of it, I think its worthless. But I don't use Thane much anyways unless I am facing something where I think I need yet another warp and I have not unlocked Samara's loyalty reeve.

If you're on the 360, there is a way. You need to save up 9 Squad Points to Evolve Shredder Ammo. Get the power up to Level 3, then get 4 more points so you can evolve it. When you go to evolve it, press X and A at the same time. This gives you the evolution window, but also removes the squad points from the skill. If you press B in the Power Evolution window, all squad points, including the initial point that's automatically put in the power, are removed and given to you to distribute as you wish, and you don't evolve Shredder Ammo.

Can you do the B button thing without doing the X and A thing? I don't want to give him more skill points than he would normally get.

You're kidding me, right? That's like saying Samara with Area Reave is horrible. You always max fortification on Grunt. It improves his survivability by a LOT. It makes him DESTROY husks, even on insanity.

Put 1 point in something, then exit the level screen so it saves. Then enter it again and treat it like you would shredder by following swk's instructions, see if doing it gets you any unwanted extra points.

Pureblood Grunt with heavy fortification can be nigh indestructible ... I say nigh 'cos he still falls flat vs. hails of bullets.

Ahh, sorry, I just assumed you were on PC. swk is completely right, and I think that by pressing B you just get the original 9 pts + 1 back. You can check it quickly on your shep, re train on the normandy and then try it out and see what happens.

Well that's pretty neat. Did they put this feature in there on purpose? I guess not if PC players don't have any equivalent option. I'll go try it out.

Well, ok, on shep Fortification is far weaker than Barrier or GSB (due to recharge reduction), but it's not meant for shep.
Hmm. I did take shredder ammo on one of my engineers, to hose foes with after I incinerate their armour .. and it was amusing enough.
But, I found that squad incendiary was still better.

I'm of the opinion that they knew about this bug before releasing the game, or even purposefully put it in. It lets Xbox users "mod" there shep/squaddies to a small degree that would normally be impossible on a console game (or really damn complicated and involve buying extra equipment).TheBestclass wrote...

PC users can solve this problem by modding, and it is a pretty straightforward fix using a save game editor.

Taking squad shredder on thane can be worth it if you don't need the unstable warp and you want a certain specific, non-ammo using squadmate on a mission.
On veteran, squad shredder from thane is ridiculously good against all those basic troops for non-ammo classes.
Taking shredder ammo on shep though is not wise.

With the mantis, he doesn't need shredder to OHKO anyone in red (unless you didn't upgrade sniper rifles).

Shredder Ammo doesn't suck. It's just a little behind the other ammos. But Cryo Ammo, as proven by Thisisme and a few other popular youtubers, is very good when used for squad. Shredder Ammo is a 60/80% damage increase against health that is constant, Cryo Ammo has a chance of (not instantly) disabling an enemy which gives everyone 100% damage boost against health and a chance for an insta-kill. My conclusion is that Heavy Shredder Ammo is an excellent bonus for Thane, a great dps booster for him, or alternatively, if you're a class with no ammo powers and don't wanna take Jack/Jacob/Grunt/Garrus, Squad Shredder Ammo is by no means useless.
I'm a Vanguard that uses Squad Cryo right now and although Shredder has its uses, I'd much rather Thane use my Cryo. I'm not saying Shredder Ammo is crappy skill (though it is compared to every other Ammo power) I'm just arguing that this is an odd design choice to automatically dump a point into a skill you would rather not have. Especially because Thane keeps switiching to Shredder when Cryo is much superior. You'd think the A.I. would be smart enough to know that the ammo power that has more skill points invested into it (Squad Cryo) would be the better choice. Thane would work great with a Vanguard if not for his annoying ammo switching fetish.
