Constant crashing Archdemon battle 1.03

I've tried putting the game into windowed mode, disabling the sound, turning all of the video details down to minimum. Nothing helps.
I would REALLY like to finish the game so I can port this character over to DA:A.
So is there someone with advice for me on how to fix this? Baring that, how about some sort of cheat that would enable me to just kill the archdemon/skip to the end. This isn't optimal, but after over 30 tries that fail because of crashes, I'm willing to do it.
Running:
DA:O with DA:A installed. Patched to 1.03
Windows 7 home premium 64bit
AMD Athlon IIx3 435
8
gigs ram
ATI 4800 series gpu

Have had 7 or 8 random CTDs in the past, but nothing that presents a wall to gameplay like this (just reloading the latest save would let me progress), nor do those posts seem to address my concerns, tommy5761, as I'm running Vista 32 bit.
Guess I'll wait for the next patch and see if that fixes things before picking up Awakening.
Specs:
Dragon Age Origins Digital Deluxe (Steam).
Windows Vista 32bit
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT, driver version 195.62
4 gigs of ram
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300, 2.4 GHz

Fix for Crashing to Desktop on Multi-core systems (also slows the memory leakage)
This applies especially to AMD processors but also affects some Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 quads!
For dual core set to CPU 1 only, for quad core set to CPU 2 and 3, for i7s set to 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Set processor affinity
Open windows Task Manager. Right click on the Taskbar of your windows vista desktop and select Task Manager or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager
Click on the Processes tab
Click on the Show processes from all users button, at the bottom
Click the Continue button for UAC prompt
Right click the process (application) whose processor affinity you want to change
Click Set Affinity
Check the CPU(s) that you want the process (application) to run on and click OK

I am curious. Why CPU 2 and 3? Why not any other?

Well, I think so, I'm not really sure.

I'm not sure how to tell what sort of "core" I am running on my computer because I'm hardware handicapped.
Intel® Core i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz is what I have according to the system, so I'm not sure if I should set it to CPU 1 only or CPU 2 and 3.
If I could get some help on this, that'd be great because I got to the Archdemon and it won't stop crashing on me, even with lowered settings.
Also, I've tried to updated my DAO to version 1.04, but it doesn't seem to stick because I have issues with downloadable content failing to install and whatnot while telling me that 1.04 is needed when I've installed it already.

It's triial and error. 2 or 3 usually works for a quad core like yours.
