even if you do walk "right up to it" the cutscene will not start.....I think the cutscene will start when you walk directly in the middle of that crate and the beacon... I always walk right between the beacon and the crate I have not tried it any other way so idk

If they put something like they put on the citadel, where you'd have a place to click/press a to look at something, it would not be hidden.
They might not have intended to hide it, but myself, I didn't find it until I had played the eden prime sequence possibly dozens of times.
