On the topic of husks, I found on my Sentinel playthrough that Max tech shield and Area Cryo to work exceptionally well. Saved me several times on the IFF mission since frozen husks kill them selves. And Area Cryo will freeze them in mass. Also, I have only just now discovered the joys of using the one shot from the Cain to take out the Mass Effect core which of course can be used by any class.
Back on topic, when I first discovered the Widowmaker I went immediately and did a geth mission. With only 3 sniper upgrades and no headshot or ammo bonus I one shot killed a geth with full health and about three quarter shields. Shot to the chest he was done. And I was hooked.
As mentioned before it is all about playstyles. Some Vanguards swear by the Claymore. I'm not one of them. It's definitely worth playing around with the different weapons to see what you are comfortable with or just for a different gameplay experience. Some you will like and some you won't. But you won't know until you try them.
Infiltrator advice?

i dont think i could ever play an infiltrator without the widow. it just wouldnt make sense to me. the viper isnt exactly a sniper rifle. i dont think i ever one shot anything with the viper. i just dont think thers any comparison between the viper and the widow. for me, i use the starter sniper rifle and i dont even touch the viper. i want a sniper rifle with the infiltrator, not a hunting rifle. the AR seems redundant to the infiltrator. youve got the SMG which is "good enough" and honestly you can use the widow for a very large portion of the game. its not hard to get thermal clips. i can understand taking the shotgun with the infiltrator tho. cloak + shotgun makes alot of sense. plus most people whod take the shotgun, are just shotgun type players so if you love the shotgun, by all means take it.
the fact that it is a one shot one kill weapon means more then just using one thermal clip per enemy. it means your out of cover for much shorter periods of time. i dont know whats better then one shot one kill.
ask yourself one question....if the widow maker was a heavy weapon, would you take that instead of the other heavy weapons???
how do you like the claymore? im rolling a vangaurd right now and the eviserator is money. i think the claymore is only a one shot clip tho but if its as deadly as the widow, i gotta have it.

For the IFF mission, i brought loyal Zaeed and Mordin along. Inferno grenade + 2x incinerate blasts = overkill. (to the point that it felt unnecessary.) Had to make them hide while i snipe down the scions, though.
I don't really like the viper, it felt like a carnifex hand cannon with a scope. I brought it along once for sniping and found that I was still expending rounds fast. You need like 3~4 shots to take out a 1-shot target for Mantis. That cancels out the Viper's larger ammo capacity. I guess that as long as you're sniping, you're forced to move from cover to cover to prevent running out of thermal clips.

You're not just a sniper, though.
There's incinerate, there's the carnifex for quick vs. armour headshot action, there's the SMG with disruptor for superfast shield/barrier stripping ...
Just remember each thermal clip you pick up gives you more shots with every weapon.

I agree...you are not just a sniper.
if you were then the class would be called "Sniper" and not "Infiltrator". The soldier in my opinion is meant to be the best of whatever weapon he picks on the collector ship all because of Adrenaline Rush...think about it. Rush is a 3 sec cooldown and either 100% or 140% damage and that damage increase is for the duration of the rush. Rush doesn't stop once you fire.
You like Shotguns...you go Hardened AR and get the claymore....better then vanguard
Vanguard can get up close with charge ...but soldier with 50%-60% storm speed and more health can get there fast also and safe.
You like sniping...you go heightened and get 140% bonus and get widow...better then infiltrator
Infiltrator gets the cloak but it only gives you 75% damage...only for one shot. and a 6 sec cooldown.
You like AR...well you get the Rev. and just hold the trigger and kill everything.
Back to my point....
The infiltrator is designed to cloak and flank/get up close/take out target. It is meant to be more tactical than just cloak and shoot the widow. You get incinerate, disruptor, and cryo ammo. You can take energy drain and be very well rounded. Personally after checking out thisisme's videos, I went with trying CQC. Its awesome.
Pick up the Shotgun and the Viper and get energy drain as your bonus and you are set for life.
I only use squad cryo ammo and that is enough for me. The viper is my main weapon as its got lots of ammo and very good and stripping defenses...plus you get a much better chance of freezing from cryo. Then you hit cloak and run in and take out the evi. and kill. With the cloak damage only effecting one shot the evi. shotgun provides the best synergy.
This is not for everyone...as about 90% of people will call FAIL since you dont pick the widow...but to each their own...I still feel that if you are all about one weapon then just pick the soldier as he is better than everyone with that weapon.

^ By that logic you might as well just stick with the Soldier. Theyre better than the Infiltrator with the shotguns and scoped battle rifle(Viper).

Infiltrator gets the cloak but it only gives you 75% damage...only for one shot. and a 6 sec cooldown.
As soon as you fire when cloaked, the cooldown will start. That's one shot with the widow with +75% damage every 6 seconds if you only shoot when cloaked. If you use heightened AR, you get to shoot only once with the +140% bonus during the 5 second duration of heightened AR. That's one shot every 8 seconds as opposed to 6.
Furthermore, you don't need a +140% damage boost to one-shot most guys, and you're more likely to hit the opponent in the head if you're cloaked because they're not shooting at you. Now which one is the better sniper?

Rumination88 and cruc1al... very good points...and i should have worded the above post differently. I didn't want to argue that the soldier IS the sniper but argue that the infiltrator IS NOT the only sniper class.
first to Rumination... you are correct and by my own logic and running with numbers the soldier would be better...but I for one do not like just spamming HAR and shooting.
To cruc1al: If you want to go based on only shooting with either HAR or cloak then yes I will agree that the infiltrator is the better sniper. But I still fell that the soldier is just as good if you want to just snipe.
This is just personal opinion....I feel that if you create an infiltrator just to spam cloak and snipe then you are wasting the true value of the cloak. Don't get me wrong, if you just like sniping then this is a great strategy. To me its kind of like the sentinel tech armor...you can use it just for the extra shields...which is great but you are not using it to its full design.
To each their own though...no one way to play a class.
By they way...I am not talking bad about the widow...it is a beast and THE sniper rifle.

Soldier certainly is a potent sniper no doubt about that. The soldier gets more health from the class passive, increasing his survivability while the Infiltrator has the cloak to keep him alive. I guess I agree that unless you're only one-shotting enemies cloaked, the soldier is probably a better damage dealer. With the Viper for example - HAR can keep you dealing uber damage for 5 seconds.
