I played with this problem for hours.   I believe that its related to a problem with the Nvidia PhysX software, the version, and the order in which it is loaded.   I had almost the same problem with the Saboteur, although the error was different.   I suspect that awc.dll might be calling, or being called, by some PhysX or rendering routine, but I can't be sure unless a dev confirms.   I don't believe it is DRM related, but I could be completely wrong :o

I'm not sure of the root cause, but what had a consistent fix for me, was to remove ME2 completely.   Then remove your existing Nvidia PhysX installation.    Reboot (I'm not sure why, but this made it consistent, might unload some pointer from memory or something).  Download the latest PhysX runtime from the massively confusing Nvidia site, and install it.   Reboot (I think this loads some driver code at runtime).

Now reinstall ME2.    This time, when you get the date check, it should behave correctly and the game should start.

I was able to replicate this solution a couple of times, so I believe it might work for most cases.
