EA's editor has slammed the new DRM system used by EA on Command and Conquer 4.

With this new DRM system, the player has to have his/her internet connection up always. Losing it even for a moment results in the game being forced back to the main menu and all progress, presumably from the last save, lost.

What if ME3 were to use this DRM as well? If EA forces it on C & C 4, chances are, it mightl foist it on ME3 as well. Would you still buy the game?

EA already makes ME3 sound suspect to me. Adding into the equation anything more than a CD check would absolutely cause me to avoid the product.

I think the players' reaction to Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed's similar DRM and C&C4's will inform EA's decision for ME3. I hope those players do us all a favour and raise hell ...

as much as i love the series, i wont buy it. i dont wanna play a single player game online. i didnt buy assassins creed 2 and i wont buy splinter cell c.. i mean i support developers for the effort they putting in making good games but f..k DRM.

You know, I would buy Mass Effect 3 in any case, as it's going to be the last chapter of a sci-fi trilogy I love. And it's going to be another great BioWare game - I kind of owe it to them. But if that's the case, once I buy it, I'll use a no-cd fix or something similar. Even though I play on a desktop... multiplayer? Fine. One-time activation? Okay...

Non-stop Internet connection? Seriously, folks, this is starting to remind me of communism - I should know, I've lived under that ......; and some publishers are really pushing it.

This is why I HATE EA. They suck at everything they do so they just want to ruin everything by buying out developers that are ACTUALLY good. Then they force gay crap on them just because they can. I love all of you guys and gals at Bioware and think that out of whatever happens you should get the final say. If I have to be online the whole time while playing mass effect 3 I will not buy it even as an avid fan of the series.

Security features are decided by the Publisher(EA). Sure Bioware says a stand was made with ME2 but it was a vocal stand not a contractual one.

Sadly that won't be the case.  EA owns Bioware and it's original intellectual property, this includes ME.  EA can slap on any copy protection it wants.  Bioware may have a voice in what they would like to see, but they have no rights to it.

Personally I'm torn on the issue.  I'd like to see the series to the end, however I will not tolerate some publisher dictating to me that a live internet copy protection is the way of future.  It's BS and an intrusion.

Hackers are always going to find a way around it.  I see no reason why the legitamate buyers should be punished.

I'm not even remotely interested in buying UBI games that use that kind of DRM and I wouldn't change my opinion on it just because it's a different publisher.

If ME3 would really come out with a fully forced online connection, I wouldn't buy it no matter what. It could be the best game ever to be published in the entire universe and I still wouldn't buy it. It's just a principle of mine I stick by and it's incidentally the best way to show companies that you don't approve of their methods.

Due to that DRM i didn't buy Assassin's Creed 2, nor will i buy C&C4. I was already apprehensive due to the changes to the traditional C&C formula they made, but that was the last straw. If ME3 has that kind of DRM i won't buy it. At least until it's cracked. Which means i can buy it on release day

This is a joke right? I would think that a lot of people have has bad connection problems with their internet provider at one point or another some more unreliable than others as well and as a counsel gamer myself I should not be forced to have to be connected to EA’s scam network to even play a game.

If they go this way then my answer is a hell no. I’ll never buy another game made by or even published by EA again regardless of the actual game maker company.

-What about a possible 4th game (without Shepard) after ME3 or for that matter any other games made by BioWare? The only thing I read someplace was that dealt with EA and BioWare is that it wouldn’t affect any projects thay are already working on.

*edit* I’m sure this will get locked and redirected to the “Off Topic Forum” since its it has nothing to do with Mass Effect 2 unless you fix the title to include Will you buy ME3 or something…

If ME3 requires full-time connection to the internet then I will certainly not buy it. This is a single player game and internet has nothing to do with it.

Edit: It is also supposed to have a MP game mode, right? At least I've read that. That makes ME3 even a less intersting option as it will certainly damage the single player experience.

February 8, 2010 - Gamers better get used to buying additional downloadable content in their EA games.

Electronic Arts chief operating officer John Schappert announced during the company's fiscal third quarter investor call this afternoon that every title released during its fiscal 2011 year (April 2010 through March 2011) will have additional online components.

"In fiscal 2011, every one of EA's releases will have an online component, both downloadable content and online play."

One of EA's major titles, Dead Space 2, has already been confirmed to having some form of multiplayer. What this could mean for the new Dragon Age title planned, as well as the new title from Epic Games, remains to be seen.

Oh, stop with the EA bashing already. It's old and it really doesn't make you look smart. It was Ubisoft that first published a game with Starforce, it was 2k that first attempted the SecuROM 7 idiocy and it is Ubisoft again that started with the current DRM madness.
It's not just EA that's the problem; it's all the corporate suits that have no clue how to run a proper business, can't adapt to new developments in technology and blame piracy for lower sales just so that they won't have to look in the mirror and admit to themselves it's due to the fact their games are bad, boring and/or buggy and let's not forget the poor customer service.

Anyway; if ME3 comes with this level of DRM idiocy, I will honestly say I will pirate it. Does that make me bad? Maybe, but not as bad as those aforementioned corporate suits are at running a good company.

It basically means Digital Rights Management - a way by which a company prevents others from stealing their IP. In games, it is how a publisher prevents hackers from pirating their games.

DRM very often inconveniences the legitimate players.

We might not even get to pirate ME3. I could be wrong but Assassin's Creed 2 hasn't been cracked yet, has it? So it might just come down to buying it with the DRM or simply not playing it at all.

This is more of a PC specific problem.  There are DRM on consoles they just hide it.  This does not apply to disc based games however.
