I think it would be somewhat easy to intergrate all this in there, just need a couple buttons at the top to switch back and forth between game messages, and external messgaes/forum/etc. Talk about convenience!
Not entirely.
The game would first need to run its own internal e-mail client, which would mean that BioWare would either have to write their own or use someone else's.
Then they would have to code that into the game, give it the ability to read HTML and load images from the Internet. At some point you're going to want to be able to visit links or reply to e-mails. Drastic changes to the UI, of course, and support for keyboard input.
Note that you can't even do this through LIVE to begin with--this would only be doable on PC versions of the game. XBL doesn't have support for the use of e-mail clients.
It's not impossible, no. Impractical, yes, and a big more complex than simply giving it out through DLC. You're not simply adding content--you're adding an entirely new feature that extends beyond the game itself.
Yes, I do believe it would indeed be a "new" feature (look at post title). I am not saying that it won't be a real challenge for XBL, and indeed it may just not be possible due to MS control over such. I don't own an XBox so I have no idea if it can access the internet over wifi/LAN (like the PS3 can).
But, for PC users, it would be a giant leap towards total emmersion in the game. With a somewhat regular DLC stream and having email/forum connections to the real world, I would find myself almost always logged into the game when at home. And yes, I do believe I was talking about fully integrating a browser into the message UI in the game, It has been done successfully in a few MMOs (I believe EQ2s built in browser is mozilla).
The most difficult part would be integrating the browser, once thats done accessing all the content here or accessing your webmail would be simple. And obviously there would have to be soem UI erdesignm but it would more or less be an added UI element on top of the current message UI. I have done quite a bit of interface design so I know this can be done, and it would not be that difficult.
But the real question is, would you like this feature in the game? Forget how it gets implemented by BioWare, focus on the result.
