This advice really should be pinned!

Mass Effect for the PC was a late to market port of a console game that had a great many problems of all kinds, particularly the constant "GPFs" caused by nVIDIA's drivers (and some other Geforce oddities as well).  ME-2 was practically out the door before nVIDIA's drivers were compatible with the older game.

There are some very useful pinned messages at the Legacy Message Forums, including discussion of how the online activation system works (you need an internet connection):

Next day, and there's still an active complaint about GPFs, so bumping this back up.

In the case of the Dragon Age Origins Tech Discussions Forum, there are TOO DOGGONED MANY  pinned message threads.  Here in this Forum, there's only one.  There really, honestly needs to be at least two, with Chris' reporting guide, amended to suit ME-1, being the second:

I have brought the instructions for reporting a problem with the PC Version back to the top of the forum earlier today.  My own relationship with this first Mass Effect has remained tenuous because I have the hard copy, upon which Sony's horrible Rootkit still resides, and I don't trust any such abominations.

There are still many answers available by switching across to the Legacy ME-1 forum and running the search (which isn't anything like as ridiculously bad and amateurish as what is available here!)

Nonetheless, both forums *DO* have Search functions.

There have been sufficient past discussions of how to find and where to locate the current URLs for the patches and the DLC, that asking about it just reveals a need for new eyeglasses, or old-fashioned laziness.
