So I picked up Mass Effect 2 recently. Before playing it, I've decided to run through Mass Effect 1.

I'm playing Shep as a Vanguard on normal difficulty, but I don't have many points in bionics powers yet. My armor has 21 points of bionic resistance with Tali and Ashley in tow.

The problem I'm having is on Noveria, there are 2 boss encounters. On the Kaira Sterling fight, she kept one-shotting me with Warp... at least I think it was warp, it looked like warp, maybe its a grenade or something, but all I know is my life span in that encounter was all of about 3 seconds as I repeatedly tried to run behind the planter before being exploded by a blue ball of death. On the way to the planter Tali and I send some combination of bionics her way with Ashley covering fire. I was able to get through the encounter on the 30th try by some fluke that the warps or rockets or whatever it was missed me and I was able to get some headshots in.

The encounter with Matriarch Benezia, was probably the most frustrating thing I've ever played. When the fight starts I have 2 seconds to step up to the charging Asari commandos and send bionics their way and hopefully deal with them quickly without getting hit with a death warp. Because I'm Vanguard I don't have the firepower to stop them very quickly which leaves me vulnerable to Matriarch Benezia's and the Asaris' bionics. The cover is useless because it floats up out of the way and the Asaris just charge in there and waste us point blank anyway.

The worst part of this is the fact that if I get hit with a Warp, if it doesn't kill me outright, it freezes me completely until I die. Shepard just lays there until he gets shot either by the snipers or the commandos. A few times (after switching to casual difficulty) I was able to live long enough to see Shepard become disfigured as his limbs and head stretch to 100 times their normal length. It's the oddest thing.

I was able to win the encounter finally by switching to casual difficulty, constantly moving, and taking out the asari commandos with damping, shotguns, and the exploding fusion canisters. As long as I got rid of the Asari commandos quickly and sent Tali and Ashley into the fight and kept Shep far away from thoe bionics I was fine.

But is it just me, or do the fights in this game always have the potential to last 5 seconds? Is it normal to get one-shotted by warp? I feel like I have to constantly save because at any moment I could get instakilled and it doesn't feel quite right.

Lemme know what you think, did everyone experience this?

Some certainly do. If you're going up against a lot of enemies, seeking cover is generally the best strategy. If you get started right on top of them (like with the Benezia fight) run and then seek cover.

It also depends a lot on class and level. A biotic player like you can level up stuff like Throw and Lift to the point where you can charge in and fire those off and take a lot of people off your feet. (Still don't charge in against something floaty like Drones that won't be affected, of course. ;)) And Soldiers and Infiltrators can level up Immunity to the point that they can waltz around so long as they're protected by it. But you do have to be careful - the cover system isn't as vital in this game as in the sequel, but it's still very important.

Nope. Especially if it really is Warp you're talking about. ;) If you're knocked over, it's Throw - Shep just doesn't get tossed around by it like enemies do, because then you really would be one-shotted a lot of the time, simply because you would get thrown out of the level geometry like you can do to enemies. If you find yourself down so long you get shot to death, you should probably look for better armor, and/or level up skills like Tactical Armor and Vanguard that will give you more protection. And if you're frozen, it's Stasis. (There are very few enemies that can cast Stasis. If you're past Benezia, you might actually never see it again, depending on what side missions you do.)

Once I got past Noveria and killed Matriarch Benezia, everything was normal after that. I have no idea why that part was so hard. I just stayed in cover all the time and let my squaddies handle everything. Was able to finish the rest of the game and moved onto finish ME2 after that. Great games, Noveria was the only oddly frustrating thing.
