Character development. You really grow to know these people and know that they got your back. You rely on them.
So beatiful. Both game endings almost made me go
Those 3+awesome gameplay makes Mass Effect universe really important to me

2. ME series, espeicially ME2
3. GTA3 and Vice City
4. Fallout 3
5. Jedi Knight: Outcast
6. Assassin's Creed 2
7. Project Gotham Racing 4
8. Uncharted 2. Would rate higher, but I found the last three hours very sloggy/shooty/repetitive.
9. COD 4
10. Dead Space Better writing would have made this a bonafide classic.
Disclaimer: I basically missed the sixth generation of gaming due to my poverty at the time preventing me from buying a console.

2 - ME2 - I did not realise how good this game was until I went back to playing DAO.
3. - KOTOR1 - Almost made joint second, but not quite.
4 - XCOM UFO - In many ways the ME2 of the Nineties.
5 - NWN2 - Probably the best "farm boy/girl to hero" depiction about
6 - BG1 - particularly with the npc mod installed.
7 - DAO - just ignore the travesty that is DAA
8 - KOTOR2 - the tragedy is that this could have been as good, if not better than ME2, if only they had finished it.,
9 - The Witcher - very similar to DAO in tone and style
10 - Doomdark's Revenge - the sequel to, and just superior to, Lords of Midnight
Finally, a honourable mention to the game that chewed up huge amounts of my early gaming time - the original Championship Manager

No Alpha Centauri: Crossfire? (This should be right up with sci-fi fans.)
No Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers? (With the Tim Curry voice pack?)
Good to see a few Silent Hill 2 listings.
It's all about story.

Ah yes! I didn't forget about that one too! But I wouldn't list it as my favorite, it was an amazing experience, but not neccessarily groundbreaking. At the time I played it it probably would've made the list, but after all these year BG2 and Fallout 2 had simply elipsed in longevity.smudboy wrote...
I see a lot of people posting up the Baldur's Gate and Fallout series. What, you've never played the best Infinity Engine game, Planescape Torment, TBGE?

1. Uncharted 2
Dialog and Action sequences to rival an Indiana Jones movie... and you don't just watch it, you get to PLAY it!
As well as multiplayer that's addictive and humorously cheap at times.
2. ME2
More developed characters, backstory, new problems, more emphasis on the team, and finally proper 3rd person shooter mechanics. STILL playing this gem!
3. Baldur's Gate 2
Most of the things I wanted out of BG1, were lovingly put into its sequel. Nuff said.
4. FFVII
Blended Industry/Technology with Fantasy very well, from locales to combat right down to the style of the characters themselves!
5. Starcraft
I've lost count of the hours I put into this game. Single player campaign. Single player coming up with strategies. Online with friends. Online with strangers. What a blast! Also a sharp game for its time.
6. ME1
Fantastic interactive dialog that blended well with the story. Shooter mechanics needed work though. Inventory system and driving around planets for hours looking for resources were a pain though.
7. Baldur's Gate 1
Best video game rendition of D&D, incorporating classic rules into thrilling combat, scenes, & monsterous encounters as well as an interesting story.
8. Bioshock
Art Deco, Ayn Rand, Big Daddies... all Under the Sea. The theme sells itself, much less the Plasmid Playground.
9. Gears of War
Best 3rd Person Shooter I've ever played at the time of its release.
Who cares if the plot wasn't as heavy as the ME series, was it supposed to be? That wasn't what I signed up for when I joined Marcus!
10. Portal
I hate puzzle games, but Portal is so charming I slugged through it.
The cake, for me, wasn't a lie. When I beat the game I had a slice. Suck it GLaDos!

I have played PST, and, whilst an enjoyable game, for me it lacks the "replayability factor" that would have elevated it into my "top ten".
I still believe Neeshka in NWN2 was almost a direct port of Annah.
Personal preference is a funny thing, for some "it's all about story" - for me replayability is much more important. I am not saying that either is "right" or "wrong", just highlighting what different players find important in the games they buy.

Although I could probably put together a top games list consiting of many of the games here with both ME1 and ME2 being at least in the top 15. I am really shocked not to see system shock 2 in any of the lists. That game was awsome, as long as you turn off weapon degradation
Back in the late nineties I couldn't get System Shock 2 to run, and now today I can't find a copy to do the work around for it to run. So yeah, played the original though
Also: YES @ Alpha Centauri

I agreee. I like it until the end which made no sense to me. I play good/polite and my son-in-law said that if I would play the dark side it would have made more sense but still not great.
