I liked Me1 a lot, but ME2 is so much better, I just love the new combat system. After watching the great Vanguard videos at some of the main Vanguard threads at the forum, I decided to take a look at how well or worse I play. Examining the videos greatly helped improving my own gameplay, it showed what I was doing right and more importantly wrong.
Having just started a new game after completing my first Vanguard insanity run and getting to know the Arc Projector made me decide to reload and start all over again. Watching my own videos turned out to be good fun and since I decided to play Vanguard after watching some of the other great videos out there, I might just as well upload my own footage.
So I thought I could make some sort of diary too. I made this in a hurry but I will update frequently. Feel free to comment, criticize and discuss. Let me know what you think of the videos and you can even help me in deciding what to do next.
My shepard is an imported ME1 Adept (my favorite ME1 class, great fun in ME2 too (even on insanity) but nothing compared to a Vanguard). This means I start at level 5 (and receive the +25% XP bonus), level 7 when I start the Mordin recruitment mission. I don’t like cover so I tried not to use it whenever possible. Here we go.
Prologue
Saving Joker’s crippled ass resulted in Shepard’s demise. Fortunately Cerberus managed to rebuild Shepard into a cybernetically-enhanced super soldier. Shepard awakes on an operating table at the Lazarus Research Station. There isn’t time for a cup of coffee – Shep has to abandon the station fast. Running away isn’t her style, but she has to know what happened to her first. The Illusive Man informs her about the abduction of humans. Shep has to go to Freedom’s Progress to recover clues or information as to who’s responsible, with help from new found squadmates Jacob and Miranda.
Shep arrives too late, all humans are already gone. But with Tali’s assistance, Shep manages to locate Veetor (a Quarian moron). The interrogation reveals Collector involvement. Shep’s disappointment not finding a worthy enemy at Freedom’s Progress is quickly replaced by the exciting prospect of a suicide mission. All this detective / diplomatic stuff isn’t her style. Shoot first ask questions later is the way Shep likes to operate.
Back at the Cerberus facility Shep runs into Joker who’s exhilarated about the new mission (or the new Normandy). Who cares anyway, Shep is back in business. All she needs before being able to launch the Suicide Mission is a team.
The Professor
Both Miranda and EDI recommend recruiting the professor first. Although Shep isn’t a MIT graduate she understands the potential of a genius who can upgrade the team’s equipment. But first things first, Shep’s female instinct wants her to go shopping – it’s unwise to look unfashionable saving the universe.
Shep’s shopping spree started at Omega (Shotgun Damage 1, Heavy Skin Weave 1, HW Ammo 1 and the Kuwashi Visor) and ended after a short stop at the Citadel (Damage Protection 1, SMG Damage 1, HP Damage 1 and Med-Gel 1).
After returning to Omega and talking to Aria, Shep knows were to find the professor - a crazy Salarian scientist has opened a clinic in the Omega Slums to cure the plaque. Getting to the clinic wasn’t particularly hard, but things are never easy for Shep. A bunch of insane Vorcha managed to disable the air control system and professor Mordin will only join the team when this Vorcha issue is taken care off. You can watch Shep’s solution to this problem here
The Convict
Acquiring Mordin’s services first paid off. He was able to research the HW Ammo 2 upgrade found at Freedom’s Progress and both (Med-Gel 2 and AR Damage 1) upgrades recovered during Mordin’s recruitment mission. A sudden feeling of helpfulness towards the Normandy crew (motherly feelings maybe) forced Shep to ensure decent diner being served after a hard day’s work, buy an engine-cleaning-enhancing device (or something) and have a drink with doctor Chakwas. Getting drunk isn’t all bad, Shep is rewarded a Med-Gel 3 upgrade afterwards – unlocks the Emergency Shielding upgrade to keep Mordin busy and she has gained a level (9).
Next stop is the Purgatory to recruit the Convict. At first glance things are looking easy. Cerberus paid the Warden to release Jack into Shep’s custody after all. It turns out the Warden is quite the fool. Trying to cage Shep is a really bad idea, especially since she has been out of commission for two years. Shep didn’t mind though, a boring pickup turned out to be quite fun. You can watch action here
The Warlord
Shep is quite pleased with herself having recovered the Shotgun Damage 2 and Damage Protection 2 upgrades at the Purgatory – unlocking the Shotgun Shield Piercing and Redundant Field Generator upgrades.
According to the info provided by the Illusive Man there’s supposed to be a Krogan Warlord somewhere at Korlus. Dr. Okeer seems to be the guy we’re looking for, a Krogan scientist (some Krogan actually do have some brain tissue). He’s working for the Blue Sons to clone some sort of Uber Krogan. Sounds interesting, but the Blue Suns aren’t too happy about Shep’s visit. You can watch Shep’s progression throughout the Korlus Base here
To be continued
Cheers
