I have a line with no dialogue. It's supposed to be a simple animation exchange between the NPC and the PC. I set this up successfully on another branch, though that one had dialogue and this does not:

I have the animation set and I want it to play the animation duration, but when it plays in game, the animation is skipped entirely. I am assuming this is because I have no spoken dialogue there.

Should I insert an empty dialogue sound file, or is there a way to force the animation to play even if there's no spoken dialogue?

I also ran into this while working on my mod.

Sadly I never found an answer. It seems that if you don't have a dialogue the game just skips to the next line and cuts the animation.

What I did to "mask" this was actually write what was going on. In your case it would be something like "You give X that special item"-or something that is long enough to have your animation play.

If you look back to DAO you'll see that there are lots of scenes that use this.

Ahh -- that's a good idea. I could just put <desc>Hands you something</desc> and it should work... excellent. I didn't even think of that. That works for me. Thanks Cachx!
