Hi All,

Here I upgraded to Win 7 lately and bam!

"Installation Cancelled"

Every time I enter my Key and attempt to install. Bioware, what gives?

Ok, turns out that with quite a bit of research on the forums, and some intuition, I get going in the right direction. Apparently once you use the Bring Down the Sky Key it's used up. But, unlike with the 1.02 patch for Mass Effect, there's no way to "unuse" the Key like uninstalling or deregistering a machine or whatever.

Here's how I solved it:

NOTE: All double slashes are actually single slashes. Thanks forum software...
NOTE: Please refer to the post at http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/131/index/2041007 for an application I wrote to help with this process. Or download the application here - http://www.filedropper.com/fixbdts (submitted 02/16/2011) Read the page carefully to make sure you are clicking the RIGHT download button.
NOTE: If you're using a Digital Download copy or a copy from another region I can't garauntee this is all you will have to do to get your Bring Down the Sky module installed and working correctly. The same is true for any OS other than Windows 7. That said, best of luck!
NOTE: Due to starting a new and very demanding position I'm no longer going to be checking this thread with any regularity. As such I apologise in advance for long wait times in response to supporting this process or the application that accompanies it. I will also not be checking bdtsappfix@yahoo.com very often either. A number of users have pointed out that this thread could be *STICKIED* but I'm not holding my breath. It's been a pleasure to help and serve the Bioware community and I hope that this thread continues to help Bioware gamers for years to come! - Zesban

1. Install Mass Effect* and then login to Bioware's fantastic CD Key repository site at http://accounts.bioware.com
* I installed the 1.02 patch before beginning this process, you may wish to try the same.

2. Get your Mass Effect PC and Bring Down the Sky Keys at http://accounts.bioware.com/my_account/mepc_cdkey.html

3. Armed with Keys in hand get ready to edit the registry.*

Windows XP
Go to Start > Run > type "regedit" without quotes in the box and then hit enter.

Windows 7 and Vista
Go to Start and type "regedit" without quotes in the box that says "Search programs and files" and then hit enter.

With luck this launches the registry editor.

*NOTE:
Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to re-install Windows to correct them. Microsoft (AND I) cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

4. In the registry navigate to (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE)HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\(*Wow6432Node)\\Electronic Arts\\Electronic Arts. If any of these keys are missing, create them. If you are unsure how to do this please contact a technician or learn more about how to use the registry at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/tools_regeditors.mspx?mfr=true
*32 bit machines do not have this node, 64 bit machines do.

NOTE: CASE is important for all of these registry keys and values.

5. Look for the key HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\(*Wow6432Node)\\Electronic Arts\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect ™ and if it does not exist create this key. This is common for Steam users.
*32 bit machines do not have this node, 64 bit machines do.

6. Look for the key HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\(*Wow6432Node)\\Electronic Arts\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect ™\\ergc and it if does not exist create this key. This is common for Steam users.
*32 bit machines do not have this node, 64 bit machines do.

7. Under the key HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\(*Wow6432Node)\\Electronic Arts\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect ™\\ergc there should be a REG_SZ entry named (Default) that has a value of your Mass Effect CD Key with no dashes and all caps. If there is not double click the (Default) REG_SZ and set the value using the CD Key you looked up earlier.
*32 bit machines do not have this node, 64 bit machines do.

8. Look for the key HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\(*Wow6432Node)\\Electronic Arts\\Electronic Arts\\Bring Down the Sky and if it does not exist create this key.
*32 bit machines do not have this node, 64 bit machines do.

9. Look for the key HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\(*Wow6432Node)\\Electronic Arts\\Electronic Arts\\Bring Down the Sky\\ergc and it if does not exist create this key.
*32 bit machines do not have this node, 64 bit machines do.

10. As above enter the Key for Bring Down the Sky you gathered earlier in the (Default) REG_SZ under the key HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\(*Wow6432Node)\\Electronic Arts\\Electronic Arts\\Bring Down the Sky\\ergc. Make sure to use all caps and no dashes, just like before.
*32 bit machines do not have this node, 64 bit machines do.

11. Now that you are sure you have both of the keys in your registry launch the Bring Down the Sky installer as an ADMINISTRATOR. The installer can be downloaded from Bioware's web site at http://files.bioware.com/masseffect/dlc/MassEffect_BDtS_ES_a.exe

12. Click Next to bring up the Key entry window. Your Key should already be in the Key entry window, if not please review the earlier steps. DO NOT click next again or you will have to start over.

13. With the Key entry window up launch the Task Manager. I usually do this by right-clicking the task bar in Windows and choosing Start Task Manager but you can also use ctrl-alt-del and choose it from the list of options.

14. In Task Manager click on the Processes tab.

15. Locate the process with a name similar to Bring Down the Sky Code.exe. It may be different depending your version of Windows. Select the process and click on End Process. This should close the Key entry window and return you to the installer window. If not, close the installer, launch it again, and try this again.

From here the module should finish installing. This is because you have a valid Key in your Registry for both Mass Effect and Bring Down the Sky.

I hope you find this post quickly and it saves you minutes or hours of frustration. I hope even more that Bioware does something about this obvious gap in the management of their DLC for this title.

If this doesn't help you, but you find something that does, please contribute. If this does help you and you have another place you can repost it, as I'm only writing this for the Bioware Social forums, please repost it there.

Thanks,
Zesban

Edited to add note about slashes.
Edited to add note about application post.
Edited to replace https with http on links.
Edited to add disclaimer regarding digital download and internation versions of the game.
Edited to add OS to disclaimer and file host for application to assist with fix.

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3Thanks after an hour on live chat with an EA rep (with only a direction to go to Direct2Drive for help) this did the trick. One note that seems obvious but worth clarifying. At least on a 32bit vista build ignore the (*Wow6432Node) portion of the key and carry on as instructed. Again many thanks.

Thank you very much!! Not sure why companies bother with DRM if they cant do it correctly. When I installed Mass Effect it never even had me enter a CD key, so I was playing without one and thus couldnt install BDtS :P Your steps worked perfectly!

I'm not sure why they included the DRM on this DLC either, but at least there's a workaround... It could be worse.

I would imagine they were trying to stop 0-day piracy of the DLC. Simply throwing new patches/content at people faster than the pirates bother to push out the cracked versions can be an effective way of fighting piracy. (Or at least, so say some of the people who have invested in this strategy for their own games. ;)) Even once some version of the main game is cracked, if updates or additions remain unavailable, then pirates still miss out on something.

It is unfortunate that they don't release a DRM-less version now, though, since it's been over a year. Particularly since EA's own deauthorization tool fails to work with BDTS activations.

It's a shame because their DRM has backfired and is now preventing legitimate users from enjoying this product while people who have successfully pirated this same product are enjoying it hassle free...

I guess it's true, when you outlaw something then only the outlaws will possess it. Point goes to pirates.

Steps 2 and on work well. Unfortunately that pesky step 1 ("Install Mass Effect") continues to fail (i.e. Installation Cancelled).

Either way, thanks for all of the above info.

WOW! I can't believe how much time I lost trying to solve that issue with EA support to finally renounce and play DAO instead. Thanks a lot for posting this detailed walkthrough, and shame on EA.

I've made registry files for ME/BDTS -- Based on Zesbans post. Open them in a text editor, like notepad.
Where it says YOURKEY!GOESHERE type in your key---NO DASHES, one for each registry file. Just make sure you get the right names.
ME.reg = MassEffect
BTDS.reg= Bring Down the Sky(yes typo, no it doesn't matter I'm tired)

Save each registry file, DO NOT CHANGE EXTENSIONS
Then double click on each file. Should work like a charm, tested on my own XP64, and Win7-64 boxes.

Don't blame me for any problems, much like Zesban, you use this at your
own risk:

Good stuff  zesban, on figuring it out and saving me the trouble of baning my head against the wall.
