I recommend Blood Mage. Repulsion Field + Blood Wound and maybe a Virulent Walking Bomb or something... pack up and head for the tavern.

Give him blood mage before clicking on the statue of Andraste and then when he starts complaining that theTemplars always assume that everyone who doesn't want to live in the Tower is a blood mage you can point out that so is he. It's pretty amusing.

Anders works best if you give him Bloodmage and Battlemage (he starts as a spirit healer already of course). Ander's biggest problem is that he has a huge investment in Willpower and thus a magic that's really too low for his level.

By the bye.....am I the only one that things the new Keeper Specialization for a Mage is nearly worthless (at least for a pure mage or even an arcane warrior)?

Actually the Keeper specialization isn't that bad if applied to Anders, so long as you're using him a back line healer / crowd control mage. Spirit Healer + Keeper on Anders works pretty well in that you can script when to activate the Keeper abilties.

i.e. Enemy Distance Near or being attacked by melee activate One with Nature (insta-cast), then activate Thornblades or if the enemy is elite, Natures Vengence. Its rather messy indoors, I have to say, but a very good defence mechanism for a squishy mage.

If you're playing him in an offensive capacity then BloodMage + BattleMage, although I have never reliably been able to use tactics to use BloodMagic the way i'd like to.

does he mention anything about you forcing him to become a blood mage? it wasn't exactly his idea

A little bit.  When you click on the tree outside Amaranthine and trigger his dialogue about freedom, he starts complaining that templars think all mages are maleficarum and you can say "But you are a blood mage."  He'll respond something like, "Well yes, I am now" and something about it being ironic.

I have not found much use for the Keeper talents in my initial play.

I do like the new general mage talents, Repulsion Field being my favorite.  Very nice crowd control element.

I normally run Anders as a Spirit Healer/Battlemage since I'm not really fond of the Blood Mage, he's got a good balance of offense and defense and does his debuff/healer job pretty well.

As for the Keeper spec, I like it, I normally run Velanna as a Keeper/Healer and have either Nathanial or Sigrun as archers stick close to her, it's pretty nasty, enemy gets in short range and out come MindBlast+One with Nature+Thornblades+MomemtumDWRogue things tend not to live that much longer after that happens. Keepers make great bunkers if your running lots of mages and archers. Next playthrough I'll probably try Keeper/AW and see how that works out as a tank.
