My system meets the recommendations for ME2, except for the video card: the recommendation is GeForce 8800 GT or better while i have GeForce 8600 GT. How bad is this? Will it slow the game down to unplayable, or just disable some special effects?

Also, does ME2 scrap all the additional assignments from ME1, or are they still playable?

If you can play ME1, you should be able to play ME2. As for "additional assignments" I am not sure what you are talking about. The equipment, abilities and equipment from ME1 are very different in ME2. If you are talking about side quests, there are a ton of them in ME2.

I wasn't sure if the side quests carried on to the sequel. But judging by your response, they don't. You see, i didn't bother with a lot of the quests in ME1 because i expected the game could be continued after the main quests just like for example in Fallout 2, and RPG wise, it made more sense to save the Galaxy first before bothering with minor importance assignments. So i wondered if i could continue them in ME2 or if i had to start a new game in ME1.

Some people even say that ME2 is better optimized and runs faster than ME1 so... any info on this?

For those of you that don't know, most actions in Mass Effect 1 have some effect in 2. It is the most AMAZING carry over from one game to another. Take the fan on the station, he appears in 2 and remembers how you treated him in one. Same with lots of other main quest and side quest stuff. You really feel like your choices in 1 matter!

As for performance, yes this game feels like an optimized version of 1. If "optimized" = a better looking game that plays better on the same hardware.

Thanks DWS, that won't be necessary though.

It's true, this game mostly seems to run fine, mostly.

This is the Xbox forum. You'll get more replies on the PC board. Not that it matters much, since you have a good answer already.

Anyway, they do say ME2 runs better than ME1 but I can tell from personal experiences that this only applies to low and medium resolutions. I used to have a 1280x1024 monitor and ME2 runs a lot better than ME1 on that resolution using a Geforce 9600 GT, but I can play ME1 at 1920x1080 and the framerate is still over 40fps most of the time. ME2 becomes unplayable at 1920x1080 in some areas so I play at 1600x900 instead.

Actually the fan, Conrad Verner, always acts as if you treated him badly. This is a bug in either ME1 or ME2 but it's there and it's the worst example of imported actions. :P

I had a GT 8600 before getting my new rig. I ran masseffect 2 fine on it quite smoothly too. Only once i recall dropping below 20 frames and i was usualy somewhere between 20-30 and that was with full dynamic lighting and all those nice settings. Oh forgot i was running 1290x960 i think it was.

ME2 runs "well enough" on my brand new antique 8400. ME1 and DAO run beautifully on it.
