I just got DAO for the xbox, and I'm wondering what's the most fun class just because of this: I usually play mages, and I will eventually play one, but for now I just feel like playing a melee class, don't know why.

So, same old question: are warriors fun in DAO? Or are they autoattack boring? I never played DAO, hence my question since in some RPGs warriors are pretty boring, doing only tank role. I'm thinking going with a DW warrior for a bit of DPS. I'm really just asking for personal experiences on what you guys think it's fun. And fun for me is using some kind of strategy, which in some games warriors don't really require. So...there it is :P

You can have the best of both worlds if you play as a mage and specialize as an arcane warrior. I suppose that the general consensus in these forums is that a mage/arcane warrior is probably the most fun build. It combines well with either spirit healer or blood mage and if you get the awakening expansion the battlemage becomes another option as well.

DW warrior is the most powerful warrior and probably the least interesting to play. He's an autoattack machine, occasionally throwing a dual sweep or whirlwind to kill everything around him instantly. Awakening makes him slightly more interesting, but your best bet is still either a sword and board or 2H warrior. Personally I'd favor the 2H in Origins for the higher challenge and general entertainment of being able to 1 and 2 hit kill most enemies in the game at higher levels.

Either that or play a stealthy cunning based rogue. They're auto attack machines too but at least you have to worry about positioning and timing your abilities well to avoid knock backs. Or you can try to play a rogue that specializes in traps and stealth bombing. I've heard that's fun. I just find it totally unnecessary. To be honest I've never used a single poison or trap in either Origins or Awakening. There's absolutely no point unless you plan on soloing with a rogue. The game is easily beat on nightmare with parties of two or more without ever bothering to build a trap or coat a blade with poison.

yep you can try AW and go for melee route, you will end up with a sort of autoattack warrior with some ok spell casting but beware that you have first to open the specialization and that will depend by your route and what you will do... you can get it in the "early game" as you can get it in the late or not get it at all

another option is to go for 2h warrior, it is not a dps machine as the dw one or a sturdy tank like 1h/shield but is fun class to play and the most active warrior as he have a lot of tricks and some decent CC capability. just tay away from zerker if you roll one as is not a spec for an active warrior due to high action consumption... the other 3 specs are all viable even if the last reaver power is a bit crappy

My suggestion is to play trough the game with a mage first since otherwise u won't be able to unlock the blood mage spec, but for the rest just go with what u want. just look trough these forums and u will find loads of info on builds and such. use that to give u an indication of how most ppl look at things. and ofc have fun!!

Thanks for the feedback guys, I started a DW warrior and it's fun, but I think I won't resist and probably start a mage later and see which one i like the best. Also, with the arcane warrior, all i see are AW/blood mage builds around the forum. Is it viable to choose AW and still be a normal caster, except with the extra defense from the armor?

Its probably not a good idea just cause of the higher fatigue costs.... plus you can put the 4 points in other spells that will keep anyone attacking you CC'd longer.... or dead

I guess I'm the black sheep here, but Arcane Warriors hold absolutely zero interest for me.  Mages can do plenty of damage from a distance, even with their staves, without having to wade into melee combat.  And if you have anything resembling aggro control or crowd control, you don't need the added protection armor gives your Mages.

In DA:O vanilla where you can have a maximum of two specializations, I almost always choose Blood Mage and Spirit Healer.  Blood Mage is useful for the incredible crowd control of Blood Wound.  1 point in Spirit Healer gets the job done with party-wide healing.

still viable... yes... optimal... not that much :P
if you dont activate the main AW power you can still cast quite well... is it worth?... depends

casters have alredy good defensive boots and a very nice defensive bp (later on), they have not defensive gloves but casters gloves gives +20% to elemental damage (that is capped to 30%)
if for you is not a problem to give up the additional dmg (as for a cc/healer build or one focused on a single elemental) there are some interesting armors out there... you will always spend more mana/hps to cast, than a normal mage but prob you will end with something like a 20-30% fatigue for a good set, that is acceptable.

in particular a very good set is heavy dragon from wade+evon bp (that count as the heavy dragon bp)... note HEAVY set, not massive one. this will give you good armor ratings at the cost of 18% fatigue so around 20 with shale helm

is it worth?... personally i still prefer BM+SH2 that help to cycle blood sacrifice and to keep the tank up... but indeed is a viable choice if you are going to play a mage who stay in the front line or draw lot of aggro.... :P

and btw try a mage, i bet you will like them, imo is the best class in DAO as they require a bit more strategy and acrive game than other ones

Well as for that, I spent all day playing with the warrior and by the end of ostagar i got bored and rolled a mage. Can't help it :P so far I'm going with cold/telekinesis line and 1 point in heal, because, well, it heals! I don't like the concept of the AW myself, nor its abilities. What I do like is a mage in armor :P Basically it's an aesthethic thing, I just wanted to know to what extent it gimps the mage's casting ability.

The mage I played was a healer/spirit healer so I can't help you much there.

I was different!

well... if you really like the armor for look go with it, i even looked at the fatigue of my mage with active buffs, so it is actually even less... the armor set i posted above have 4% fatigue for 27 base armor... with stone armor you are going to have 40 armor for 8% fatigue that is pretty decent (no helm), but as said no gloves with elemental dmg :P

I just look at the AW as a warrior who can cast spells, its the reason that in any fantasy game i always go for a class or class combi that lets me play a caster who can also stand his own when he's out of mana or gets a beating. something the classic mage type never can take.

So if u wanna play something like that, go AW, how u combine it with other specs is up to u (just don't take shapeshifter)

Btw, since u want to look cool, once u have the 4th AW talent Fade Shroud u become white/transparent as long as combat magic is on.(just turn it of for conversations if possible)

so it looks quite cool.

You're assuming that it is your PC that you'll be playing most of the time. I play on the Xbox 360 too. I usually shift around to using other characters like Leliana or Wynne for tactical reasons when I'm a warrior. Tbh, I play as Wynne a higher % of the time as a warrior. It is fun for me since I can do a lot more pestering as a mage with her spells than I can do with my activated stuff in my warrior.

Personally I like Rogues. You get more dialogue options for having high Cunning and Coercion skills. You can jump ahead of the front line cause you can detect traps and your other characters can draw aggro. You get more skills to play with because you get skill points every two levels instead of every three. Crafting while unneccessary I found to be fun for Role Playing reasons. Rogue skills are awesome especially for single combat. i like top go straight for the Bosses. The specializations are brilliant and very versatile. They're not over powered but very survivable so the battles are survivable but challenging as you level up. The gear and Talents for Rogues in Awakening are insane and really fun to play with, especially Flicker. I may be biased because my first playthrough in both Awakening and Origins was as a Rogue so everything was new to me when I played it. But I highly recommend the Rogue class I had a fantastic time with mine.

I also recomened the Dwarf Commoner Origin. Though I've heard great things about the Dwarf Noble Origin which I haven't played yet.
