I am playing as a elf mage level 10 defensive/custom and use alistair as my Tank, with Wynn as my Healer, and Lelianna as my ranged dps.  No matter what I seem to do Alistair dies and allot as I am stuck on the 3rd quest for the Antivan Crows. Any advice on other builds being I am still rather early in the game or can I salvage this team?  I really enjoyed Zetheran and Morrigan, not fond of Sten and still have yet to quest on my Golem shale.  I was not impressed in the FADE with the Golem. I apologize for this post here but scared of spoilers...

Okay, hopefuly this'll help you.

To increase Alistair's survivability give him some constitution when he levels up. Dexterity's good too. If he's tanking then he won't need strength higher than 32 for any talents although he'll want it higher for using heavy armour. Try to keep his constitution equal to his strength, or even higher. That being said you'll keep finding good armour for him and have to go pure strength for a level or two to get it and then you can start balancing him out again. Remember that Constitution helps with physical resistance too.

When he goes into a fight and starts taking damage have Wynne cast Regeneration on him. Then have her cast Heal as well. Those two spells together will be enough to cover most of the damage he'll be taking (or at least untill the renegration expires and you cast it again). There's a good spell worth casting on him too. Wynne should have it (or be able to take it next level). It's called Heroic Defence. That ought to help keep him standing too.

When Alistair gets Shieldwall make that an automatic always on tactic (you should probably do the same with Threaten).

Alistair, Leliana and Wynne is a really good combination (sometimes a little too good). Definitely one of the easier party combinations to play. Can you imagine playing through the game with Alistair, Sten and Oghren? Or even Alistair, Sten and the Mabari Wardog? Now that would be challenging.

Shale is more interesting than the golem form in The Fade. The golem form's special attacks are all skills that Shale has, but Shale has many more. The trick to using Shale is that it's talents are divided into different groups. Each group is associated with a combat mode (damage, defence, ranged attacks, party booster) and only one mode can be active at a time. Learning when to have Shale switch combat modes is something you take tiem to get sued to. Wether you like the character is entirely up to you.

I hope that all helped :).

You can also spec Wynne to get force field so that you can send Al in to grab all the aggro (with taunt), pop him in a force field, and let your DPS thin out the number of mobs while they're bashing away uselessly at Al. If you're fighting something like an ogre, you can wait to use the force field until grabs him. (You can also use force field on enemies... but I find it generally more useful as a defensive mechanism since you can heal Al while he's in it, etc.)

At higher levels, you'll pretty much be able to just waltz through everything, though... once Al has some decent armor and better talents he makes a very sturdy tank. Getting grabbed by an ogre can be a death sentence at lower levels, but it's really not as big of a deal later on.

It helps also to use Wynne or morrigan or your mage PC to make lesser healing potions (you just need the first level of Herbalism) to make them and set Alistair's AI to quaff a potion at 50% health so when Wynne's heal is on cooldown and if he is sucking up a lot of damage he can drink a potion. Flasks can be bought in camp. Unlimited Elfroot is in the elven camp so you can make as many as you can afford to buy the mats for. I also recommend pulling a potion into one of your action bars (if you play on the PC) so he can be directed to drink one if his AI fails to make him do so (as it does sometimes for me).  Also remember as a spirit healer Wynne starts with a group heal you can toss out there too to give additional healing oomph.

I usually go all strength till he hits 32 (this is around level 9 or 10 I forget but its fairly early) this will put him in some decent armor for his level. The max you will ever need for strength for him to use gear is 42 (tier 7 stuff) put the next 3 points into dex and that will let him get the third level of his shield skills then start buffing up his constitution. I split his points pretty much between con and dex leaning to con so his physical resistance can buff up some and check his shield skills, I usually don't go much higher in dex than his max required for skills.

Put your best armor and shield on him, give him a decent weapon so his dps will help hold aggro. Don't worry about how much damage he is doing leave that to your mage and rogue to chip away at mobs while he keeps their attention on him. Get warrior skills up (taunt/threaten/disengage are most useful for me and esp bravery, he gets bonuses when he has multiple enemies on him with that one.)

When he hits level 9 get cleanse aura, most useful for getting those pesky mage hexes off him and party members.

You don't say what difficulty you are playing at but I would recommend lowering it if you aren't on already on the lowest setting at least till you get more familiar with the game.

@Senorfuzzylips

Thats a cool idea, I never thought of trying that before, usually I just use forcefield as crowd control.  I will have to try that the next time he gets plucked up by an ogre.

The self:any -> acivate mode condition is good for sustained abilities that you want on always, like shield wall.

I find Taunt works better than Threathen.

Make sure your tank always has the highest armor rating of your group.

Use your mage as Balgin Stondraeg described. The ally: health < 50% -> cast spell works well for me to trigger heal and regeneration with possibly use a potion at health < 25 % as a last resort for Allistair.

Alistar doesn't really shine as a tank until midway (level 12+) through the game when he picks up some key shield skills like Shield Wall / Shield Tactics /Shield Mastery. They with some good massive armor, he can hold out on his own when surrounded by enemies. Before then, you have to take some care with him.

Don't start over you doing good.  As another poster mentioned, Allistair is still missing some key skills which he won't get til level 12+.  Until then you will need to micro manage your group to keep him up.  Don't use the default Tactics AI from Bioware.  Get in there and modify it ..playtest .. modify ... playtest etc to get the hang of things.  Also you want  least one of your dps to assist Allistairs target at all times to kill it fast.

Look for "Enemy Target of Allistair" in the combat tactics to set your party up to assist same target of tank.

Alistair is a very poor early game tank... but he gets better and becomes a great end game tank.

The most important hurdle for a tank early game is 42 strength, so that they can wear massive armour, if you have access to blood dragon, it is possible to have sten in it more or less straight after lothering.

Once you have 42 strength on Alistair put the rest of the points into dex, end game alistair is most effective as a defense tank.

Shale is the probably the best early game tank as long as you realise that taunt and stone aura is more effective for tanking than her stoneheart form.

To get Alistair tanking quickly in my latest playthrough:

1. Str to 42 as soon as possible.
2. Dex to 26
3. Rest in CON

Skills:

1. Taunt (else there is no tanking)
2. All the shield stuff EXCEPT the damaging styles. (go as far as your current dex can with 26 dex you can get everything)
3. Bravery (helps when swarmed.
4. Unlock champion and get the two first skills.

As for equipment:

Dwarven part of the quest lets you stumble (if you search every nook and cranny) over one of the best melee damage absorbing armors (it requires 42 str).

Elven nets you one of the better magic tanking sets.

Tactics:

Activate the best shield style you have (self any: activate xxx) Shieldwall is the best even when you first get it.
Activate Rally (champion talent)
Activate Threaten on bosses (or anytime if you're lazy)
Self, surrounded by 2+ enemies -> taunt
Self, surrounded by 2+ enemies -> Warcry

Those last 2 are the only 2 active skills I let him use... yeah boring but hey I'm not really playing him :P

NOTE: This is a KISS (keep it simple stupid) method of skilling a tank, yes there are other ways to skill alistair that may or may not be superior (dex tank, magic tank etc) this is a simple con tank that should keep him standing relativly long as long as he gets a heal now and then :)

Read my thread on how to setup wynne for healing here.

Get Cone of Cold for both your mage and Wynne. Cast liberally. For 95% of the battles you won't need to do anything else.

Yep sound advice.  Tanks are not gonna do any sort of burst damage anyways and activating defenses drains stamina.  So don't worry bout offensive damage abilities as it will drain your stamina further and may cause Allistair to be at empty when you need a specific defense activated again for a long fight.. Just put him on auto attack.  Do setup your shield stun vs mage targets via your tactic UI if anything but what this poster shared will be good enough ...

WOW, THANK YOU and YOU, ALL of YOU!

I have played many games and been a part of numerous communities online but I must say this is the first time all of the comments from all of you who posted were not filled with insults or posted nothing of value or help.  But you all have such great ideas and support for a fellow player it really means allot I had to say thank you to each of you.  I hope I didn't go too far by asking for your friendship.  Either way Thank you.

I am not usually this wordy so please don't scare off...Image IPB

NOW for the game, I started to play Sten (not a big fan) in the Arl of Redcliffe and doing well, but miss alistair.  I shared with one of you how I put every point earned into STRENGTH leaving my constitution basically as if I just started.  I think putting points there will fix my issue.  I do tend to play all my games on the "paragon" or good side of things, however I am up against deciding on my Bloodmage spec.  I hear Wynn will leave if I do and it will tick off Leilanna with whom I have 96 percent in approval.  I may just save the game twice and go back unless you suggest another way?

As for armor Alistair has his Templar armor and I do have Wades first attempt at armor waiting to get 3 more scales to have him redo it, will that be better for Alistair?

Finally, I have about 10 gold in the game and as high as 17 gold, how in the HELL does a person get to 28 or higher for gear?  I bought the dwarven merchant belt along with the archivist belt, one for more gold and the other for 25 more exp in codex.  I have completed broken circle, and all quests up to the finale of nature of the beast, Arl of redcliffe, and urn of sacred ashes.  In other words instead of killing connor right now for ARL I am going to go back to brother G in the chantry with my amulet to gain access or direction too the final step to the urn and finally complete it and then return to deal with connor.

Once again Thank you all who responded

Hey if you want to be a blood mage be sure to get shale early level up his constitution he hits 100s so theres no issue with not leveling anything else and use him when you wana take lifeforce from a party member.

I would give alistar wardens commander armor, Calin's armor, or the juggernaut armor those are your best bets

You can get extra gold by doing the chanters board, mage's collective, and blackstone irregulars quests, and any other side quests along the way. Also make sure you take a rogue everywhere to loot all the locked chests.

You won't lose Wynne or Lel by learning the blood mage specialization, though you might lose approval from some companions depending on how you deal with Connor.

Level 10 is why. Once you hit level 13+ the game gets way easier and keeps getting easier all the way to 32

1) Go to dragon age nexus and get a respec mod.

2) Respec Alistair, put 2 points in DEX and 1 poin in Stregnt until you don't have any points to spend.

3) Make him a dual weapons user and he will become an awesome tank and dps :3

Shield + sword look cool for a knight but he is so slow...

4) Download advanced tactic from Dragon age nexus

5) Set the tactic so Wynne will do group heal

6) Set in the tactic that Alistair have to take a healing potin when his life is lower than 30%

7) Get the skill paralyse for Wynne when you respec her make her full Wisdom and Magic until she reach 36 in Magic then you can spend points into stamina.

-- Plots issue --

Go to mage circle if you want to save Connor and Sacred Ashes usually come after Connor quest unless you choose to sacrifice Isolde. You DON'T need to sacrifice Isolde to get your Blood mage spec, just get a mod so you WON'T loose your only healer! It's pointless to obtain it with the plot because in Awekening you will be to BUY IT.

-- Other things --

Respec your character so they will suck less is a wise things to do :3

Gold gets easier and easier... but do have 40g on you when you talk to a certain dwarf in the slums of dorfland.
