It would be a great idea. I see people trying to remake baldur's gate with DA:O's engine... but it's a ridiculous task. Diablo 2, on the other hand, doesn't have as many zones, hardly any dialogue, and would be fantastic to see rendered in 3d. The gameplay would be more like DA:O, and less like diablo. What i mean is there won't be as many ridiculous **** going on, not as much skill spamming - basically, it'll be a more tactical diablo 2. I think it would be interesting, and not nearly as impossible a feat as recreating baldur's gate 2.

All a Diablo 2 recreation would take are a recreation of the zones (there aren't many - about 7 per act, 4-5 acts, with act 3 having only 2/3 zones). Many of them are very similar to each other.
Diablo 2 would be fun to recreate because of the different unique enemies. What a DA:O version of diablo 2 would be is basically a static version of a diablo 2 runthrough. So, instead of rendering every single one of diablo2's numerous versions of a zone (and random unique enemies), you'd just recreate one of them, with your choosing of which unique enemies and magical-leader enemies to carry over.
