I've heard some rather disturbing (since I didn't know about it untill now) facts about being able to choose a bonus talent. If someone knows anything about this I would be glad if you told me.

uh......dirsturbing? I dunno. When you use a skill (biotic, tech) 75 times you unlock that skill as a bonus tallent for new characters to add to thier squad tree if they don't already know it (soldier with lift, biotic with incinerate, ect) although if you pick a class that already learns 9 skills from thier class (7 from the class, 1 from armor, 1 from spectre) then the bonus talent will be replaced when you learn that last skill. if you place that talent on your hotkey button/bar then you can continue using it after it's been replaced, you've just got to NEVER TAKE IT OFF of that quickslot or you will lose it forever. Alternatively if you kill...125 guys (i think that's how many) with a gun you unlock weapon training for new characters using that gun (pistol just upgrades everyone's existing pistol training, since prettymuch everyone starts out with that i think) but you don't gte weapon training AND a new talent. you have to pick one from them. (6 biotics, 6 techs, 3 weapons, with handguns being a passive bonus like the ally achievments)

Just take a closer look at your achievements list and you'll see what you're missing or what you've already earned. (newgame plus characters can't learn or change thier skill, only brand new ones)

If the OP's talking about being able to pick biotic talents for non-biotics not making sense (after unlocking them in earlier games of course), then there's an easy answer. DON'T. I don't see any problem with any character class picking additional weapons or tech talents, modern soldiers can cross-train so why not future ones ?

New characters only. It's something you pick after choosing your class. Existing characters can not choose a bonus talent, even if you start a new playthrough.

That was always something I found a bit silly in ME1, though I'm not sure if I'd call it "disturbing" - just an annoying mechanic (that your first character often ends up weaker than if you'd known better to make a second).

Well... there is a way to force a new character not to have a bonus skill in ME 1 if your really, really

dead set on it, and it only really works under certain conditions, so here it is:

First, this only works with a soldier(or maybe others I never cared enough to try it for myself).

Second, it only works if you dont have all of the bonus talents.

So, go to start a new game, when you get to your class selection, move it down and select a class that can get a bonus weapon skill, select the one thats at the bottom of the list(this will probably work with any class that can choose from many different bonuses)

Choose the lowest one on the list, advance through the setting screens to the final one, then back out of them all the way back to class selection, choose soldier, and it will(this is on the 360, no clue if this will work on a PC)come to the bonus skill selection screen with a blank space chosen. Continue on to make your character and, you guessed it...no bonus skill.

Bleh...had to figure this out for my room mate it the barracks one night, guy is a purist with his characters if there ever was one.

Sorry for the poor formating, my day started...42 hrs and 23 min ago lol

Never was quite comfortable with the bonus talent mechanics, really. It totally breaks some classes.

It's tough being comfortable with adding a biotic power that isn't the basic throw to a Soldier. And since I'm a shotgun-addicted Shock Trooper, well... Same goes for giving an advanced biotic/tech talent to an hybrid class.

One could obviously pick a bonus talent and not invest in it. Yeah, look at how many guides/builds recommend that, lol.
