Is anyone else on the PS3 having terrible problems with the "checking save data" thing at the beginning of the game? It takes far longer than it reasonably should. Just now I hit start and then had to go make myself a sandwich and lunch for tomorrow and I came back and it was still checking... about two minutes after that is when it finally worked.

Sometimes it takes a long time and then fails to sign into the servers. Hit triangle again and its straight in. Just one of the many "issues" with the game!!

I've had this issue and you can't hit triangle to skip checking save data. After taking an hour to check save data it then starts checking downloadable content for 5 minutes. I often will launch into it then go to the wc and grab something to drink while waiting for it to load up. And it's still doing it May 2010 after 3 PSN updates the last of which causes the game to lockup repeatedly.
