Overall, I truly enjoyed this game. I played BG,BG2, IWD 1 and 2, Diablo 1 and 2, KOTOR (5 completions), so I have some background in RPGs and clickety-click type games (i.e. Diablo). I have yet to play Mass Effect and the Witcher (I have both games, just haven't gotten around to playing them), and I just ended my WoW subscription after 3 years, which is why so many games have remained unplayed.
Anyway, this was definitely one of my more enjoyable gaming experiences, character development was excellent, if somewhat flawed here and there (unexpected romances that I never intentionally started), some irrational choices/responses, but in the end, character interactions were a huge part of the game, and they did a great job in fleshing out the characters and make them as complex as possible, without huge flaws in their personalities. Of course, Morrigan's proposal at the end felt forced, as did Leliana's hardening, and Wynne's disease, but those things weren't too distracting.
Gameplay itself, very well-balanced. I played on Normal, and found it pleasurably challenging for the most part, with only a few times where I was like WTF (Branka's fight comes to mind). The end fight, as I've seen mentioned, was a walk in the park compared to some of the boss fights. When I saw Sandal in Fort Drakon on my way to the top I cried tears of relief so I could stock up on what I thought were required materials for the Arch-Demon fight, being left in the end with only 2 or 3 potions missing from the huge stack I just bought/created. The tactics worked quite well, some oddities, but I'm sure if I spent a little more time working on them they would have been more effective.
Next playthrough (first time was a Rogue Ranger, this time it'll be a tank character), I'll definitely do the Mage Tower first so I can grab Wynne for healing, and get my stats up fast. I completed about 55% of the game the first time around without any healing skills (I finally caved and gave Morrigan Heal), and then went to the Mage Tower and picked up Wynne. I could have saved myself a lot of money in potions and mats.
I chose the Ultimate Sacrifice on my first ending, I was in a relationship with Leli, declined Morrigan (even though I had become physical with her in the past), so my character decided to stay faithful and consequently leave Leli as a widow... to see an alternate ending, I let Alistair have the final blow, and let Anora take the throne without her having to get married. Unfortunately, this resulted in the biggest dialog bug in the game, which was disappointing, where, when you talk to Anora after the speech, she talks about Alistair still being alive. That's just sloppy, Bioware.
I thoroughly enjoyed the end blurbs, showing you the consequences of all your actions, including some of the side quests, which may have seemed inconsequential at the time, but resulted in some great storyline evolution.
So, now it is time for Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, while I visit Ferelden occasionally with my new female Cousland warrior to see how the story evolves with a less than nice character. Thank you, Bioware, for the experience.
Origins finally done, thoughts
