I can almost assure you once they knew that not everyone could be included - they prepared themselves for this kind of backlash.

Then why in the name of Odin (nudge nudge) advertise this thing as an epic community event? Most people are more angry about the misleading advertising/hyping than they are about not being able to partecipate.
With this being said, the Child's Play ideas have my whole-heartedly support and I, for one, will be more than happy to donate every single one of my points.

Heh. Andrea.... I like the Odin reference. :-)

However - I get they said it was a community event. But how would you have liked them to have phrased it? "This is a Community Event For US Citizens Only - Except states such as NY and FL which can't participate." (Not sure if it's true about those states... just skimmed and noticed people have mentioned that).

In the end - they did not lie. It is a community event. It just doesn't include the ENTIRE community. I suppose they could have been super specific and mentioned US Community Only or something... but in the end - would that have truly made a difference?

What if there was no count down? No hype. And one day they posted, "US Residents can now have tokens to claim points to win free swag from Bioware!"

Do you think this backlash would have been avoided?

I personally don't think it would have.

People would have still rioted and complained.

"constructive"?
I made it about three pages into this thread before skipping to the end... to see if things... improved.
I have not seen ANYTHING "constructive" about this thread.
Nothing but "srsly epic fail bioware" phrased in 30 different ways by sixty different people is hardly anything "constructive."
People in this thread act like this is the be all, end all.

to be fair its hard to be constructive when youve got nothing good to say about something.

I agree that for many there is nothing good to say about the countdown result.

But does that mean fall into immature anarchy with "srs epic fail bioware" posts for 170+ pages?

But in the end - Bioware doesn't owe anyone anything else. This Bioware Bizaar Community thing is just an extra "bonus" that some people can take advantage of.

i agree with you regarding the fact that many have overly high expectations the fact they did the bizarre itself is a good thing, but i think the way they promoted it is a little deceptive and could easily have been avoided.

No you grow up.do you not have any sense of fairness?
You sound like an immature jackass hus happy as long as he getswhat he wants with complete disregard for others!

Fairness does not exist in the "real" world.

If everyone had the same attitude you have, my people would still be forced to sit on the back of the bus.

If something seems unfair, what's wrong with raising your voice in protest?

Yes because civil rights and equality of a people has anything to do with fairness. No it wasn't the Chinese Government restricting the rights of the Tibetans that caused the backlash for them. It's not the fact that they restrict the civil rights of Chinese citizens. It's because they are just being unfair.

BIOWARE'S EPIC COMMUNITY COUNTDOWN SAGA - ON YOUTUBE

Once upon a time, BioWare built up hype with a 7 day long countdown to an "Epic Community Event", which turned out to be an event that excluded most of the community.

People had been misled, hyped up for what turned out to be nothing, and were generally angry at the implication that they apparently didn't count as part of the community.

This is their story.

At the end, with the 'This is their story.' line, my mind automatically played that Law and Order 'dah dah!" sound.  I'm not sure if that should be a Image IPB or a Image IPB on my part.  Image IPB

I actually did see this. And while it's an idea with a lot of heart - the reason the other countries are not included is probably for a reason. Whether legal (with some kind of law with the countries, etc) or otherwise. I don't think for a moment Bioware sat there and said, "Let's have this contest... but pretty much just include most of the US." (As I understand it - there's even some states that aren't eligible because of various laws).

So for Point A - while this would be awesome - I don't think during economic times like this Bioware (even with EA backing them up) could afford this kind of thing. (Do you realize HOW many people play Dragon Age outside of the US? And just owning and registering DA alone is like 1500 points! Granted, that's $15... but take that and multiply it by the thousands? It adds up ver quickly!)

Point B could work. It would be nice if it did. But I imagine it's those international laws that allow those of you outside of the States to play to BEGIN with is what prevents you from playing to even DONATE anything you might win.

And Point C I just could not see happening.

I am no lawyer. I am not an expert on international laws. But I think Bioware has enough logic to include everyone they possibly could for this - if it was within their power.

I can almost assure you once they knew that not everyone could be included - they prepared themselves for this kind of backlash.

Point A/ seems an interesting way to build the community. Giving away free swag to 50 peeps working at gamestop, not so much. At least there would be a reason behind doing all this free link building for EA.
But my point was the topic isn't only filled up with nerd rage. There also are some funny pics.

I don't get why some of you are going to other forums to badmouth BioWare, or why you expect some sort of substantial gift. If anything, all BioWare really owes us is a small apology for their mishandled marketing/contest debacle. I don't think raging and badmouthing the company is going to get us anywhere at all. Nor does it prove that we deserve any sort of response. Maturity is usually repaid in kind.

For some people, ****ing scratches an itch. A very loud itch. If BW had released a Liara, Garrus, Mordin, Leliana, Alistair, ad infinitum... LI combo DLC, do you think the ****ing would have been any less?

Two hours ago Stanley Woo closed a topic and asked to stop spamming the forums. I think thats all we're going to get.

Huh? He only did that to keep the topic to this thread, not to silence people. I never understood peoples desire to create a new thread to discuss something being talked about in a thread that already exists. An active one no less.

I was under the impression that these particular sticky threads, found in all 3 sections of the forum (Off-topic, DA general and ME2 general) should be for people to discuss the contest, spamming their token url to attempt luring suckers into clicking on them. Thus I tried to have a regular thread to discuss our disappointment. Of course that crazy bot locked them.

Now, since we have 3 threads with the same title, all stickies, over 3 section of the forum, I just post the same message on all 3 of them. Sucks to be ignored by 2 whole threads when you think you're saying something important about such an epic fail!

Complaining about it isn't going to change anything. Bioware can't please everyone. It's not unheard of for a company to have a specific target audience for some games/contests. Look at square enix for example. If you think that spamming the thread is going to make bioware change their minds, then your in for a big surprise.

Alright, time to listen you lowly maggots.

We have raged on for long enough now. It is obvious we won't achieve anything with endlessly ranting and spamming. Thus let us use our powers for good instead of evil.

We know BioWare isn't an unreasonable company, neither is EA. How poor their choice of words to advertise this event may have been, there is nothing they can do to circumvent the laws that prevent a contest such as this one from being held worldwide.

But all hope is not yet lost:

Last year, during the final weeks of ye olde Mass Effect forum, BioWare gave us the
Gift of the Yeti Facebook game. Each play of the game had BioWare raise a penny for gamer children's charity Child's Play, up to a total of $10.000 USD.

What we ask of BioWare is to repeat this act of kindness. To allow not only every ineligible member of the community, but also every willing legible one to donate his or her Tokens to Child's Play. Whatever a single Token might be worth in US or Canadian dollars is up to BioWare (and EA, I guess) to decide, the same goes for the maximum amount of money set aside for donation.

In the end, this solution will likely prove to be the best for each of the involved parties: BioWare/EA can not only set this incident/miscommunication straight, but also get some good publicity out of this. The community members which were not allowed to participate, can participate for a good cause. And let us not forget Child's Play, which will be allowed to help even more children.

We have saved Ferelden from the Darkspawn, we have fought for the lost, now let us Fight for the Children.

I disagree. I don't recall this much unrest as a result of the Canada-only contest. Plus US-only promotions happen ALL THE TIME. Look at the Dr Pepper thing. Frankly, here outside North America, we're used to it.

The only thing different about this time is that we're not normally intentionally hyped up by a company as a result of a week's worth of marketing, only to be told "LOL, DIDN'T MEAN YOU!" at literally the last second.

BS

Companys run regional competitions all the damn time,
If they had just announced the competition in a halfway sane manner, there would have been a 3 maybe 4 page thread on the folks ineligible venting there spleens.

Instead they launched a Countdown, taglined with the words "epic community event" and various devs/officials bigged up the forthcoming event in their twitter feeds/forums.

Any one who says there would be the same response to both situations is just full of Sh**

actually less than 10% of biowares demographic lives in those areas so it doesn't really work like that.

I know I wouldn't have, just as I didn't the the US-only Awakening DLC, for example. Personally, I only felt cheated by the countdown and then the exclusion, as you may (ironically) see in my signature :D
