Am I the only one who thinks this would have ended better if the countdown had ended with "We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I!"

Actually, Bioware commented on that...

The absolute irony is, when I click that link I get:-

'This video contains content from Vevo, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.'

We Europeans get nothing!

Me too LOL...**** VEVO and BIOWARE.

ROFL Here you go....enjoy.

BTW: YES that's exactly the content VEVO kept from you.

This is what I could find on the web

"In Florida and New York, games of chance with total prizes exceeding $5,000 must be registered and a bond must be posted. Once the winners are announced, a winners' list must be provided in order to release the bond.

For many Internet content sponsors, it is simpler to prohibit certain states' residents from participating in the contest than to comply with these extra, somewhat burdensome procedural requirements. This is the rationale behind the common limitation in many contest rules, 'void where prohibited,' or more specifically, 'void in Florida, New York and Rhode Island.

rules, 'void where prohibited,' or more specifically, 'void in Florida[/b],
New[/b]

and Rhode Island.'

Since the Internet is accessible worldwide, Internet
sweepstakes sponsors may want to limit participation to United States
residents only. Alternatively, the sweepstakes must address each
country in which someone could access the promotion. The laws and
regulations of contests[/b] and sweepstakes vary widely from country to
country. For instance, certain countries (Belgium, Malaysia, Norway)
prohibit sweepstakes altogether, while other countries (including France
and Spain) require registration and payment of fees. Limiting contest
access can be done through legal notices or computer technology
capable of identifying the geographical local of the proposed
participant. Additionally, the duration of the contest, and especially
the deadline for entries, should be stated in terms of dates and
precise times in a specific time zone. "

...oh well. I really don't my information to be in some database anyway just because I won a cup. I really wish people would stop whining about free stuff. you'd think this was the only US-only contest in the history of mankind

There's that, to be sure. But BW said community event. Community. I was unaware that community was a such a loosely defined term. They could have included a notice that due to legal reasons, only US residents are allowed to participate. Now look what happened.

Guys, the countries and states that are excluded, I am fairly certain, are not participating due to their OWN laws regarding contests. No one at EA/BioWare decided that the only people that are a part of the community live in a mere 48 of the USA's states.

I mean the Warden's Quest event was not that long ago, and included teams made from all across the globe. In that case they did have control over it and consciously chose to include the entire world. That says a lot more than legal barriers on a single event.

Yeah people can accept there are marketing laws but that is not the point.

As I posted on another thread; It is the fact Bioware plastered a countdown banner and made a real big deal out of it. They intentionally caused a lot of hype and attention and got Bioware fans from across the globe excited.   Then when the community event is announced they simply say "private party for USA only"

Thats why people are annoyed.

Yep. Not very clever of the marketing and community managers. ;)

Kelly: Bioware's methods may be extreme but they're still looking out for their higher-up's wallet's best interests.

It. Isn't. About. The. F**king. Contest.

It's amazing how many people haven't realised that we're not upset about being unable to take part (we're used to that by now) but about being led to believe this "epic community event" would include us. Hence all the "Guess we don't count as part of the community" posts.

"In ten days, we'll be revealing details of an special event for our consumers residing in the USA! Due to state laws, I'm afraid it won't be available for those in New York or Florida, but unfortunately this is unavoidable. The rest of you... well, see you in 10 days time!"

That's all they needed. They could add a countdown timer as well, if they wanted. But to hype up EVERYONE, only to disappoint the majority... it's one of the dumbest marketing decisions you could make.

Irrelevant.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but PR campaigns like these are meant to build a favourable impression for a company, perhaps gaining them some tangible benefits.

Now, I honestly believe that the person responsible for spearheading this particularly "brilliant" initative should be sacked for the following...

S/he is clearly either a sadomasochist or is deliberately trying to do a poor job. Why? You don't ridiculously hype up a promotion with the foreknowledge that you will be excluding 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the very people you are targetting with your advertisement from the onset (yes, Bioware is well-aware of geographic breakdowns of their customers). What's the reasoning behind doing such? You excite and then disappoint. All that garners you is customer dissatisfaction and tarnishing the company's reputation which at the end of the day affects profits negatively.

Now, no doubt many companies look at most of their customers as idiots, that's a given, but to have a week-long countdown to an announcement...that you will be letting them do some advertising for you? That's just sheer arrogance right there, and a glorified slap in the face if we're to be perfectly honest. It's especially galling in light of its billing as an "epic community event". Yes, truly groundbreaking, waste your time for an insignificant chance at winning something that's probably available for sale anyway. At least with the lottery you aren't doing work beyond purchasing the ticket or annoying your friends online with Bioware spam.

What an unmitigated disaster.

-edit. Oh, and just how could they have avoided this backlash? Making the whole thing a simple thread in the announcements subforum, like any other. None of this hype was warranted to begin with.

Agreed. This whole countdown event is the very epitome of gimmickry. You can not find a better example of the meaning of the word "gimmick" anywhere.

I wish people would stop letting Bioware off the hook all the time by blaming EA. I love Bioware's games too but come on...they have some say over their own marketing.

I can since all the noticable screw ups have happenned since EA took over.  :D

I'm just glad Bioware is still around since most developers assimilated by EA normally only last about 1 to 2 years before being disolved and there IP's taken to be turned into yearly garbage fest releases.

Patch v1.3 broke my game.  enough said.

It is soo hilarious to see that almost everyone who has a signature actually embedded the "I used to be a part of the community..." pics. That is soo humiliating!

Actually, BioWare created a community event of epic proportions, ... just not like they most probably intended to do. And yes, given the now united-in-This is an outrage-community, this was most probably one of the biggest PR failures since the beginning of community events ...

"It's true, it's true that we have been defeated, but basically by what? By money and ethnic votes, essentially.

I guess that's what Bioware tried to avoid!

Sorry if this question is obvious or has been answered before, but why are New York and Florida excluded?
