Announcing the BioWare Bazaar

Whoever heard of putting an event together, developing the prize list, getting the other companies onboard, and then at the last minute, running it past legal to see if it can work?
That is doing things backassward. How close to the launch did they get Legal's advice? As the seconds counted down? Even with a days notice they could have put a blurb on the site to come up with the announcement.
Think folks, and don't be so eager to swallow the feces just to get that good feeling.

Last year, during the final weeks of ye olde Mass Effect forum, BioWare gave us the [/b]Gift of the Yeti Facebook game. Each play of the game had BioWare raise a penny for gamer children's charity Child's Play, up to a total of $10.000 USD.
What we ask of BioWare is to repeat this act of kindness. To allow not only every ineligible member of the community, but also every willing legible one to donate his or her Tokens to Child's Play. Whatever a single Token might be worth in US or Canadian dollars is up to BioWare (and EA, I guess) to decide, the same goes for the maximum amount of money set aside for donation.
In the end, this solution will likely prove to be the best for each of the involved parties: BioWare/EA can not only set this incident/miscommunication straight, but also get some good publicity out of this. The community members which were not allowed to participate, can participate for a good cause. And let us not forget Child's Play, which will be allowed to help even more children.
We have saved Ferelden from the Darkspawn, we have fought for the lost, now let us Fight for the Children.

I know many of you have been waiting for word from BioWare on the BioWare Bazaar and our Community. Sorry to make you wait, but we wanted to make sure you understood how important all of our Community are to us. As such, we went right to the top for a response.

That's good to hear, although it would have been nice to get that reply sooner. You could have stated right away that the intent had been for a worldwide event but that you ran into some legal difficulties.
Anyway, apology accepted.

Thats more then I expected. Still not to happy about it, but at least feeling a lot better now they apologized. Thanks for that Chris, Greg and Ray. Looking forward to what events the rest of the year will hold.

BioWare definitely really values all members of our world-wide Community, no matter where you live. Accordingly, in the coming weeks, we will be announcing details about future events specifically for fans living in those territories which were excluded from participating in the first BioWare Bazaar. The future events will be a bit different from the first Bazaar in how they’re set up and structured, but our goal is to feature the same caliber of awesome prizes and great BioWare collectibles. We’ll announce more details in the coming weeks
[…]
Hopefully they've learned that from now on they need to be as upfront as feasible about the whos and wheres of any future community events. I think that will go a long way to unruffle some feathers.
I'm just envisioning a hypothetical "New Yorkers only, except NYC" event, or "Floridians only, except Greater Orlando" event. Then "NYC only, except Queens" and "Greater Orlando, Florida only, except Dr. Phillips."
Then, of course, as the year of celebration draws perilously closer to a close, the last-minute "Queens, NY; Dr. Phillips, FL; oh, and we almost forgot: Australasia! Just not Christchurch."
Then as the last seconds tick away, "Christchurch, NZ; McMurdo Station, Antarctica; and, oh crap!, Belgium! Except Namur!"
Then of course those Bioware fans and customers stuck in the only place on the planet that Bioware never got around to covering will take to the forums with their own "I used to be in the community, now I just live in Namur" banners.
(with apologies to those Bioware fans and customers living in Namur—you've been warned!)

This extreme response makes more sense to me than the other extremes who turned a complete 180 and said, "Thank you Bioware....for saying the obvious. I love you ! <3"
Huh?
Throughout this entire thread, people have been saying that legal obstacles was the reason why it couldn't be more widespread, so that was already known.
To the people who have turned a 180 after hearing from Bioware, did you actually think that Bioware sat down and said, "muwahaha, let's screw those Europeans over. *strokes his cat diabolically*" How absurd.
I thought people were raging at things like:
misleading leadup and marketing
promotion (countdown timer, epicness, dev posts etc.)
spending zots, and money on things like this, when some people still have serious but unfixed bugs in their game that need addressing
I guess principles are officially an old -fashioned, out-of-date concept like the horse and buggy.

Did you guys actually read this response from Muzyka and Zeschuk closely?
Here's what they said:
1) We're sorry for pissing you guys off... we ran into legal problems and so we had to exclude most of you from the 'celebration'. (translation: I know we promised you that this would be an epic community event, but it turned out to be a much smaller national community event... sorry for lying)
2) We vaguely promise to make it up to you in the future. (Translation: Please accept a deferred promise from us, now. We won't burn you again. tee-hee)
3) Oh, guess what! despite your rage, this Bazaar is a HUGE success so far! (translation: Muahahahahaha!)
4) Thank you! (translation: Muahahahah! we got your money. so thanks for that!
^you know what? screw you, bioware.

I partially agree with you. I do NOT think Bioware has sunk to those depths as yet. I don't think Bioware is sitting in a dark corner twirling his moustache menacingly. ( 'cause we all know that a villain without a moustache is worthless)
I think what's happening is that the times have changed, and they are doing what they feel they must to survive financially. Unfortunately, they feel that it must involve doing things which are highly unprincipled. It's the difference between a cutpurse who feels he is doing what he must to survive and a rich tax collector who desires even more money from the starving peasants. Both are villains, but the former justifies it to himself by saying that he must do it (while completely ignoring other legal and ethical options)
I don't think Bioware has reached the point of the tax collector. That's a whole other level of villain who doesn't even need to justify it to himself.

National inferiority complexes. Consumer insecurity about whether their favorite company cares about them. Rabble-rousers rousing rabble. Outrage! An incredibly immature sense of scale.
And this post isn't any better. Sigh.

As for the referral link clicks, note that they only count 10 unique clicks per day up through 500 points (i.e. 50 days worth of clicking the link 10 times per day), then only one click per day thereafter.
So nobody is going to be rolling in illicit points from referral link abuse, other than making quiet personal fools of themselves if they get carried away before they realize there is a daily cap that's quite low.
Hurt them? Not one bloody bit. They did a better job of hurting themselves by not being proactive on damage control (e.g. not proceeding with this until they had a lock on who all would be able to participate, then exercising care to manage expectations accordingly).
I suspect some of the nerdrage is self-fueled now, and nothing Bioware can do will be able to quench those flames.
I myself vented and am back to merrily playing Dragon Age.
