I completed Awakening the other day after having a pretty smooth ride overall (I only recall 1 glitch, and even then, it wasn't that big of an issue to mention). My only problem is the new cast of characters are...well, lackluster, from the preset builds given to the dialog to even the connection you get from them.

Anyways, I was wondering, with the ability to buy respect tomes, is there even a point in using certain characters outside of personal preferance (I like such and such over this because....)? I used Justice, Oghren and a mixture of the rest with my AW/SH/BM build (silly me, thinking that anything besides the final boss took effort with Spirit Warrior and Shimmering Shield along with Hand of Winter and Crushing Prison) and I couldn't figure out why I needed more than 3 characters to be possible party members the whole game.

Any opinions / ideas / comments besides insults would be appreciated

Here's the way I look at it.

Oghren -- I usually spec him for a combo of beserker/reaver -- keep him 2H wielding with a nice battleaxe (frankly, I never use mauls) .
Justice -- I usually spec him for templar/spirit warrior ... they seem to go together. Leave him S & S. Unfortunately, the game doesn't have a large selection of really good Tier 9 swords or kite shields, which is what I want for him.
Sigrun -- actually makes a very decent warrior-rogue, the cool thing is there's very little need for a "pure" rogue in this game (so few traps, so few locked chests & doors), with her high STR and Legionaire Scout spec I usually give her dual wielding axes and swords and slap on some medium-heavy armor and she's practically a 3rd warrior.
Nathaniel -- is the Shadow man, he's the one where I usually focus on building up his stealth attacks and his archery, although I usually just let tactics run his archery. The Howe bow he gets early on is really nice.
The game starts off Anders as a healer but I usually switch that around.
I see Velanna as more of the druid, so I spec her in shapeshifter-spirit healer-keeper, have her focus on a bit of primal & entropy, as well as healing.
Anders I tend to put into blood mage-battlemage. And make him the more offensive mage. Arcane warrior I just don't use.

Guardian spec; just never used much. It fits the Mhairi character's nature and would have kept her specc'd in it, but you know what happens to her.

If you use the re-spec tomes, it all comes down to personal preference on companions- to a point.  I favor teams of four with 2 Mages, so unless I'm playing a Mage myself, I have to take Anders and Velanna.

You will also want to consider the companion sidequests, added dialog, and approval if you're bent on getting them to peak performance.

I see your points lazuli and CybAnt1. I do understand that most of the other things besides spells / talents / attributes determine the companions you'll use but I just wasn't sure if there was another reason.

I know for a fact Anders and Oghren are my two favorite characters and I rarely take them out of my main party. I was just curious to see if anyone found any real reason to use a certain character outside of personal preference.

Not really, they are fine the way they come, so they fit in just right no matter what your PC is in class, i suspect that they have been thinking alot about how to balance the characters, the fact that u have 2 mages in your party with such a small cast shows that they have been listening to what was said on the forums.

I was also VERY suprised on how devastating a good specced archer as Nathaniel can be, i had never paid much heed to the spec, but now i see it in a totally new light couse of him :)

I only wished it was a more difficult campaign, since its quite easy and short considering u are playing epic lvl chars...

Sigrun imo is a must. She is just so fast and damage dealing

Velenna - i used her also because i love mages for one LOL. and she is just a fresh of air and good personality

Anders - I also used Anders as a healer. He is like my Wynne and great personality. Theese were my 3 party members.

I used Nathineal until i got all 3 of theese. he was also good :)
