I have finished another run through Mass Effect 2 the other day and a small nag has been tugging at my mind. I am not really attatched to most of the *new* companions. Thane, Samara, Miranda, Jacob, Zaeed, and Jack. (Mordin is an exception, love that guy, legion is pretty cool too).

I try to get excited for them... and I honestly they are well developed, and I am interested in a few of their backstories, but I never really had a chance to really emotionally invest myself into their characters. Garrus and Tali are excused, they have been around since the beginning. When they returned from the beginning, it anchored my investment into them. However the severe lack of dialogue,"Maybe later commander, im busy commander,  must meditate commander" really hampered any sort of attatchment I might have had with the new cast.

Maybe it is the lack of dialogue during sidequests, (Why does Tali not say ANYTHING aboout the Geth weather device?) or maybe its their sever lack of interest in talking to me, but this has dampened my enthusiasm for future runthroughs. Here is to hoping for improvement in ME3.

I disagree. I felt more attached to the ME2 squad mates than the ME1 ones. I did feel more emotionally invested as we literally helped them by taking a look into their own lives, with the loyalty missions. That to me, very often fleshes the characters out more. Sure, a character can have quite the personality, but what makes them seem more "real" is having their own history and troubles. Especially if you get a good picture like with the loyalty missions.

Problem is, I never really experienced their history or troubles. I suppose I feel more attached to Garrus and Tali because I have been through the first game with them. Not to say I was not interested by the newcomers, I just did not feel much for them.

Take the big decision with Samara and Morinth. I save Samara because I am a paragon character, and she has already swore an oath to me. (Though apparently the choice hardly changes the game at all) I just did not feel any weight to the decision. How can I care for Samara when she brushes me off every time I ask?

I am beginning to notice a pattern, Collider. Every time I visit a thread, and react to the topic in discussion in said thread, I check the posts to find that you have already said what I am thinking. This is very uncanny.

Now I am having an individuality crisis. And am beginning to suspect you can see into my mind.

Quick! What am I thinking right now?!

I feel more attatched to the teammates in ME2, like take garrus for example I try to like him but I just don't like him as much.

Yeah, I get kinda the same feeling. I like most of them, but I don't care about them. I'd throw Jack or even Thane under the bus for Wrex in a hot second.

Maybe it's because the game has more humans? The human characters in ME1 were pretty bland, too (here is the nice one. Here is the mean one. Kill whoever's redundant). Jack only could get interesting if you romanced her, which I could not (thanks for that, Bioware :|).

If I was to make a list, I'd still put Thane and Samara above the humans, but even they'd be miles below Wrex/Tali/Garrus.

I agree, every time I'm about to type something he has already stated it. What up with that man?

I could detail what I believe the cause is of the OP's reaction (as well as my own) as I have done before. But... I feel like fitting in with the dirty masses today. So dear OP:

Why, oh why, must you complain? If you hate the game so much, go play something else. This is the best game ever made because so many reviewers have given it such a high score. If you think the characters are less developed in ME1, then you are wrong; because they are so obviously more developed. Go cry somewhere else.

I hope you have enjoyed my thorough dismantling of your opinion. Have a nice day! :)

I agree with the OP. The problem with the ME2 squad mates, IMO, is that they each have their '15 minutes of fame' and then that's it. After completing each of their loyalty quests I forgot they were still on the Normandy.

I like their individual stories and found their '15 minutes' interesting, but I have no motivation to continue caring about them after that.

Curse you Karstedt, it took me a moment to realize the satire in your post! Though I will note that I love Mass Effect 2, and that I find the new companions back stories interesting, I just do not feel the emotional investment I kept hearing the PR team talk about.

I posted this partly to rant, and to partly voice my opinion in hopes it will be improved upon.

That's good....you are not alone in thinking this aspect needs improved upon.

Tali may say nothing about the weather device because the mission was crafted after her lines were delivered.

It's mainly because characters like Thane and Samara are acquired later in the game where as in ME1 everyone was with you from the start minus Liara. I didn't really like most of the characters but once I started talking to them on the Normandy they seemed pretty cool.

True.

Someone claimed that the ME2 squad mates actually had the same number of dialogue as the ME1 squad mates, but when it comes right down to it, ME2 squad mates' dialogues are short.

ME1 squad mates at least had lengthy stories to share with you. Take Ashley's story about what happened to her youngest sister as an example.

well, It doesn't help when you're never going to hear half of that dialog, courtesy of parity to the Xbox version.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with humans, at least for me. I consider Miranda's loyalty mission with her sister quite poignant and melting the ice queen's heart a bit. Jacob's might have been better if he you know...talked about it. I get that he might not be one to share feelings (or have feelings, haha), but the guy just saw his father as a monster, and either killed or sent to prison. At the very least, he could have expressed his satisfaction to seeing his father put to justice more.

I do not think it is the human factor either. I also agree that Miranda's mission was fun, really showed some emotion in that one. However Jacob was a good example of people I simply could not get attatched to. He felt more of a secretary than Kelly even did.

Don't you hate it when someone interrupts your complaining with perfectly reasonable development explanations like this?

It's like it takes all the air out of your grumble balloon. And for what? A stupid, stupid development constraint you can't change. Damn the development constraints. Damn them!

Oh? So the mission was created when all of Tali's dialogue was finished recording? That is an immersion breaker all the same. Hope they watch that and have a better handle on the schedule next game if this is true.

The number I saw was; a total of 30% more squadmate dialogue in ME2 but there is double the number of squadmates in ME2.
ME1 characters have more to say on an individual basis  but if added together, have less total dialogue because there is less of them.

So in the end, you get more overall but less for each individual. Less focused?

Well about the sidequests and party dialogue. We never really got much out of squad mates in missions in the first place (gameplay). Which is why I'm very glad that we had loyalty missions, it humanizes these characters more so to speak. Which is why I want to see more personal missions in ME3 (not recruitment missions), although I doubt we'll get them.

It's very rare the QA is told to measure immersion. That's what FGs are for, and I've NEVER seen ANY dev focus test an entire playthrough... ever.
