I've only played Awakening once, and I let him live. Simply because of pure rationality on my part. I needed the 'gift' he gave me to kill the mother. Also, I was RP'ing as a Dalish Elf....and I still had a sense of what has this to do with me and my clan...

If we look at the broader perspective, what then about Avernus? Is he not also conducting experiments? And are they not also - by some - considered to be 'evil'?  Does Avernus not also use Grey Warden blood and dragon blood? And does Avernus not also experiment on unsuspecting people? etc.

And alo this:

Do we have evidence - in game - that it is the Architect who created Broodmothers etc.?

There's nothing to suggest the Architect creating those broodmothers.

The Mother is a broodmother who was "freed" by the architect. He didn't create her, he simply liberated her from the collective mind of the Darkspawn, and it drove her crazy.

It is logical for the Architect to free broodmothers, since all her children then are born without hearing the Old gods call.

You're right, and have opened up a new line of thought.  The Mother's appearance is so different from the other broodmothers we've seen and now I'm wondering what she looked like before she was awakened.  In other words, are the children different because there's a species of broodmother we haven't been introduced to, or did congenitally depriving them of the Old Gods' call revert them back to a form of monster that the taint was derived from?

Then, the taint would come from an old specie of unknown monsters and wouldn't be linked with the Chantry tale of the Magisters entering the Golden city?

The Mother is referred by the wikia as being previously a human female. So she should birth hurlocks only (genlocks for dwarves and Ogres for Qunari broodmothers). But indeed, she gives birth to the children, and it's never explained how it comes that she is able to do so.

Maybe the Architect experiment indeed created something that modified the taint in her. But is it something new? Or is it something that "awoke" an ancient power that always had been in the taint?

This is an interesting theory, but might be off the original topic of this thread (killing or not the Architect).

Because even if they're not evil, they still spread the taint just by being around.

Agreed. It's the reason why I never let the Messenger go.

The Architect is a darkspawn + All darkspawn carry the taint + The taint corrupts all life = The Architect must die

Killed him.....an eye for an eye, I say. It's like in Skyrim, I'm an Empire kinda guy, but in the very beginning the Imperial Captain lass wants to cut my head off for no reason, I look for her in Helgen to wax her ass!! Anyway, remember that Dark Spawn, just ooze nastiness....nasty....nasty.....nasty, hehehe!!!!

*raises hand* I'll leave aside the fact that I read The Calling and know there's more to him than meets the eye. From an RP point of view, my characters have no reason to trust him. He used Warden blood in his experiments, he doesn't understand the sanctity of human life, and he's absolutely ruthless. I'm all for ending the Blights, but you need to end the taint, too. Creating intelligent darkspawn doesn't do that. It just spreads the infection. And can result in creatures like the Mother.

At the end of the day, you have to put your faith in a creature that's experimented on you, spawned a psychotic broodmother, and released a horde of intelligent darkspawn on an unsuspecting world. While I'd like to offer the darkspawn the choice of freewill, there's no way to limit their taint. They would just end up corrupting more and more humans until there's naught left but darkspawn. That's not a sustainable future.

All of this, and because Sigrun turns on the party otherwise.  My typical mage/elf playthrough requires a warrior/rogue to balance out the party.

Well, I've finally finished reading the thread and my opinion has remained unswayed from my original position.

My "canon" Warden is a human mage (female) who survived slaying the archdemon through the Dark Ritual. (She didn't want to die, nor was she willing to sacrifice her lover's life either. HOWEVER, had Morgana not been the Warden's companion throughout the Blight then the Warden would have instead chosen to sacrifice herself instead of trusting the witch.) She considers herself to be fairly level headed and practical and although she thinks that the Chant of Light is the most beautiful thing she's ever heard, "True Faith" escapes her. For what it's worth, she personally doesn't believe that the Seventh Blight will be the last either as the "Old Gods Theory" just doesn't ring quite true to her. (She also has some serious questions about the actual mechanics behind the "Grey Warden Death Blow", especially considering the "messiness" that spirit possession brings to the "Two Souls/One Body" Theory.)

She allowed Avernus to live and continue his research because she knew that if he was faced with a choice between saving the Darkspawn or Humanity he'd fall on the side of Humanity. The fact that his research is showing promising results in the war against the Darkspawn makes the choice to look the other way at some of his methods easier as well.

She killed the Architect without a second thought for what amounts to the same line of reasoning, in said choice she knows that the Architect would pick saving the Darkspawn over Humanity and that makes him too dangerous to be allowed to live. Of course the fact that his conduct has threatened the people under the Warden-Commander's charge made the decision a easy one to make.

I killed him because he made my equipment bug and disappear from the game <_<

I also didn't quite trust him. It seems too risky to let him do what he wants to... and I have a hard time turning down optional boss fights.  They tend to be the more challenging fights in most games.  I did think he was a bit more interesting than the end boss, so it was fun.

I'll be confiscating the computer you wrote this on now...
