Ok so I finished Awakenings today and am not exactly clear whether Vigil's Keep was destroyed (my PC chose to save Amaranthine but had all the upgrades in the Keep and had sealed the basement). This is what the game said:

first off when I looked at the world map to go to the mother's area, Vigil's Keep was represented as a skull icon, and it said 'Destroyed by Darkspawn'. During the epilogue screens, this is what it said about the keep in order:

The people of Amaranthine were grateful to the wardens and sent supplies to help rebuild the keep. It took one year to restore Amaranthine and five years for VK.

The walls of VK held strong, the soldiers killed 12 Dark spawn for every one that fell due to their awesome weapons, the Darkspawn army 'breaking on the walls of the Keep'.

The two dwarves from VK went to relay the information about the Kal'Hirol casteless to Orzammar so they must have survived.

The few survivors from VK were treated as heroes.

It talked about my pc staying at Vk for a while then leaving.

That's it, not in the exact words but that's the gist of it. Some of the statements make it seem that VK got trashed, the others make it sound like it stood strong.

My best interpretation is that VK did stand strong in my game but was badly damaged and the army was also weakened, so it had to be repaired. Perhaps the map icon that VK was destroyed is mistakenly applied whether you improved the defenses or not, or perhaps it represents the common belief of people that Vk wouild have been destroyed; after you saved Amaranthine.

It's rather simple. The news you received from Vigil was that it was not doing well and so abandoned as a lost cause (thus the skull symbol). Perhaps it would have been good to be able to go bolster the Vigil's defences but at that point the focus was destroying the mother so she couldn't keep producing more darkspawn and sending them after you. However, Vigil does stand, your companions do survive but guards stationed there take heavy casualties.

I don't recall all the details from my playthrough, but there was a mismatch between the codex descriptions (all the characters left behind there died) and the epilogue (all those characters survived, in the fully upgraded keep). Just an error, like in Origins when Connor's mother (can't recall the name) is described in the codex as dead even if she survived (because one got the help of the circle mages using lyrium instead of blood magic). In that instance the epilogue was "correct" so that's how I interpreted Awakenings, the epilogue (various characters survived and what they did) as correct not the codex and in-game description.

Or, along the lines of Tinnic, the codes represents what your character knows/believes at the time (heard VK fell and all killed) and only later after fnishing the last mission does your character learn that some survived.

As for VK being destroyed, could interpret as most of keep damaged/destroyed but your character stayed there in e.g. one of the surviving towers for a while then leaving. Note that even a "destroyed" keep built of granite, by analogy to castles, aside from magic/explosives/extensive siegecraft, it would be mostly doors/gates/internal floors that were destroyed, walls would remain standing, a portion at least could be made liveable quickly even if overall reconstruction took years.

Welcome to the many bugs of Dragon Age, epeeist! Please, feel free rationalize and theorize in atempt to speed yourself through the Denial stage of you playthrough experience. It gets better if you just learn to... wait for it... Accept.... Ah, screw it. Your screwed, but at least you paid for it. Yay!

I think it says that everyone at the keep died in the codex because as far as your charecter knows they did as the only news you get is that the defence has not gone well.

Also, it would ruin the epilogue if they just told you before you finished the game.

What I'm wondering is if, will any of this carry over to DA 2?

I mean the codex says everyone died. Will that carry over or will the Epilogue ending?

i read the epilogue very carefully... the vigil puts a hell of a defense even with the "enduring vigil" perk... it gets rebuilt anyway in 5 years up to the dwarf mason's standard even :)

Plain and simple: poorly thought out, rushed ending.

The keep stands. The army takes heavy losses. The codex entry only states the information that the warden knows before the epilogue. If the warden believes that the keep is lost as he/she has been told going back there would be futile.
The biggest threat at the moment is Mother and to a lesser extent Father (The Architect). It is simply limited information that happens in real wars and battles.
Later on the warden gets better information, because there are survivors.
