In ME1 I took the same group each time and id didn't really matter what my class was. Kaidan in most games or when I played Charlie's Angels, I took Tali and Liara. Part of it was I wanted the NPC with me. But in ME2 I have no real preference.
I like taking Jack because shockwave comes in handy and if I like the drone but I no longer keep the same group for each mission. Very different. Not better or worse, for me, just different.

Run 2: Fem Vangaurd+Miranda and Morinth. Love=Garrus. Difficulty=Normal: I made idiotic mistakes like over useing charge which got me dead way to much. Also I found out about switch Samara for Morinth and I liked her ALOT. I kept pushing for her but nothing was going on. so I wound up with Garrus. I still love how she can kill you after the games over. LOL.
Run 3: Male Infiltrator+Miranda and Grunt. Love=Miranda. Difficulty=Normal: Was to easy. I should of upped it. I thought the moment between my guy and Miranda was steamy. Bummer no nudity. ><. Mordin survived and got that achivement.

ME2 Also Vanguard most of the time, used a lot more characters this game around. Miranda & Garrus were my main teammates, although Mordin, Samara, Legion & Zaeed saw a fair bit of action as well.

Miranda + Jacob against Blood Pack
Miranda + Zaeed against Blue Suns
Later on:
Miranda + Thane against Collectors/Eclipse
Miranda + Garrus/Zaeed against Blue Suns
Miranda + Jack against Blood Pack / Klixen / Loki & Fenris Mechs (hacked Jack so I didn't have to put points into shockwave).
Miranda + (Loyal) Tali against Geth.
Loyal Tali is so effective against Geth she almost trivializes them. It's a shame that by the time you get her loyal, there are very few Geth-heavy missions left.

This is in part because:
-Grunt is vastly overrated
-Pull is tremendously underrated
-(If you can hack her) Jack is essentially an improved version of Jacob.

I do like Jacob but find a suitable non shotgunner, non biotic is hard. in his loyalty mish it seems like takeing Jacks a mistake and so is Miranda. Grunt seems like a bad choice for him too. Tali is like a Tech version of Jacob. so it's like he's better with Thane, Samara, Garrus, Legion, or Zaeed.
Also I love playing Biotic Shepards so combineing a biotic Heavy Throw to Jacob's Heavy Pulls makes so instant deaths happen or cause enviromental damage. It also gives you the combo achivement quick.

Garrus and Thane work good And have this "Former cop and Assassin" diolog exchange which is awsome. Check it out in Garrus's Loyalty mission.Gadaire321 wrote...

He tends to be annoying to me in combat in 2 for some reaon.Digsy wrote...
Garrus was pretty much my constant leading up to the suicide mission. His weapons skills are great and he doesn't annoy me with pointless dialogue during combat ("I will kill you!" " I AM KROGAN!" etc etc)
Heres and exmaple while I'm shooting the Geth Hunters spy drones:
"Scratched one! Scoped and-Scratched one! I love this rifle. I love this rifle. Scratched-I love this rifle."
Yes yes, I know you love the rifle...I'm like geez get over it. Lol.

For terms of combat performance, I usually chose either Garrus or Legion.
I don't really have a set team, because ME2 can't provide what I need.
I favor soldier classes for endurance and Assualt Rifles.
While Legion does have the shielding capability and the assault rifle, he doesn't have the 3rd requirement, high health.
But he's as close as I can get to a "pure soldier" like Grunt, so he's usually the one chosen.
Although sometimes, I would use Miranda, because I gave her Heavy Slam, which is very useful (one shot kill for enemies).

2nd game - Zaeed + Garrus except for final battle which was Zaeed + Mordin
3rd game - Zaeed + Grunt except for final battle which was Zaeed + Mordin
Current game - Zaeed + Kasumi

In the first Mass Effect, I mostly stuck with Liara and Garrus, although I would occasionally use Kaidan and Wrex. Garrus's damage output is sky-high, and coupled with Shepard's overall damage output, plus Liara's superior crowd control, the team was almost unstoppable. Kaidan and Wrex leant themselves to a more defensive play style, mostly centering around making good use of combination biotics(especially Kaidan's Lift and Wrex's Throw at once).
In Mass Effect 2, I used Miranda and Zaeed a lot, as well as Garrus and Thane or Samara and Tali. I wanted to cover up for the resistance denial that I didn't have, so I took people who could easily deal with shields and biotic barriers, as well as keeping overall damage output in mind. Tali was the weak link in the latter instance, but her Combat Drone ensures that she's not totally ******-awful without Energy Drain.
