I would have thought Mass Effect 2 would push it even more, I hoped for this, because I know BioWare can push things and do so tastefully...however, ME2 was a big step backwards.

I don't know; I actually thought ME2 beat DA:O by a country mile when it came to romance cutscenes. I mean, DA:O basically just had the same awkward animation recycled for all sex scenes, with just the faces swapped out - which included, of course, the inappropriate expressions and mysteriously appearing underwear. Those scenes weren't just bad, they were terrible to the point of being hilarious, and I actually did burst out laughing a few times.

ME2 didn't show as much skin, which I suppose might be disappointing in some respects, but at least the scenes made some sense in context - and more importantly, were actually specifically tailored to each romanceable character. 

Also, I believe there already is nudity in DA:O - just not in the romance scenes. Desire Demons, for example (and some might argue Broodmothers as well). So, given that they already crossed that line in the game, it makes even less sense that they'd suddenly retread when doing the romance cutscenes.

I noticed that just now, they used direct footage from IGN's own site for that story. And I don't think Erik has that banner up, anymore. I can't seem to find it. If you know where it is, share it.

This TOTALLY does not surprise me.  I suspected a connection, because...

when i saw this "scandal" after ME came out, i thought, "wow, that is the most genius piece of marketing ever, because:

a) people who freak out over there being 'sex' in a video game are likely not gamers. they are less likely to realize that there ARE ratings on these things, they typically have content filters OR the ability to choose what you're watching and (once i found out it was a bioware game) they're typically story-driven LIs that are in keeping with the story.

and

people who do game will either

1) want to check it out for themselves because of the idea of seeing boobies

2) want to check it out for the purposes of intellectual curiousity and because they want to investigate the claims of the 'news' for themselves

3) realize it's a bioware game and think w00t! another bioware game where there are love interests. gimme, gimme!"

any way you slice it, the (mass) effect (ha ha!) is that people who are not going to game WON'T buy it and will forget about it in a few days as yet another case of our society becoming full of filth and people who ARE going to game will keep the name rolling around in their heads for a week and then go check out the website, say, "ooh, hey, blue alien sex aside, that looks like a really friggin' awesome shooter/RPG game."

or, you know, maybe you bought it because of the blue alien sex. but either way, MARKETING GENIUS.

Maybe, good perspective. But I doubt it's really a marketing plan, any media out there will do anything to create a hyped up story. There's some ignorant and gullible people targetting mostly soccer mums out there, that would listen to this sorta crap, and all it would do is derail the sales for this game.

No I didn't mean it in that context.  Fox News looked bad over this debacle shortly after they did it in 08.  It's good that you are posting though.  People think that there is not enough nudity in ME2 because of this, but Bioware has stated to the contrary and DA would show evidence of this if it that were the case.

DA has no nudity, and it's sex scenes are things of comic hilarity.  It's self-censorship, and they're just trying to deny it.

Bioware has stated otherwise and DA also had s/s content which ME2 does not have.  It may be self censorship, but you don't know that for fact.  Saying they are just trying to deny it doesn't mean that they are.

The only reason ME1 was targeted was because the sex scene was briefly shown in the game's trailer.  It hinted at nudity, which set off prude alarms.  It was later found out that the girl/girl scene was a possibility, which set Faux News off more.  Regardless of what BioWare wants you to believe, their games after that report took a huge step backwards in terms of sexual content.  Clothed dry-humping and scenes of implied sex are a huge step back from the tasteful, romantic scenes shown in ME2. 

Regardless of BioWare's stated reasoning, this happened after the Faux News report, and comes off as self-censorship in response to the report.  They can say that it was 'artistic choice', but it still appears otherwise.

This.  While I liked how ME1 handled the romance scene, it was the exact same scene with interchangable player models and slightly different dialogue. 

I'm slightly disappointed that Bioware toned them back, but I'm infinitely more appreciative that they took the time to make each romance special and tailor-made for each character.

lol I just laugh at the bither movement myself. It doesn't help that they make real conspiracy theorist like myself look like nut jobs. I call people like that non back up Theorist, since they don't back up there claims with facts. Which I do back up my  claims with facts from the diffrent things I talk about.
