I have 2x 9800GT SC by evga in sli x16 for both cards on the new nforce 980a.

max settings and most the time i have it locked at 75fps. Lowest would be around 55 during heavy battle scenes which is really not noticeable.

In all honesty both new series of GPU Nvidia/ATI are virtually equivilent, as i have tested both running crysis on very high settings with full AA, the benchmarks are nearly identical with Nvidia pulling ahead by a fraction, I currently use a ATI 5970 (Sapphire, the ATI/ any other company iv'e used tend to be faulty aside from BFG althou i no longer used nvidia) its very smooth, and the game holds 65 fps on high stress areas, 80 fps standard.

I posted too fast.  I received my Asus EN9600GT Silent (with GeForce 9600GT) today, only to find that it does not fit in my Dell Dimension 5150 PC.  :(  The huge heatsink interferes with the CPU heatsink/fan.  Anyone have any idea which 9600/9800 cards will fit in a Dell Dimension 5150?  Or should I order  2-4 different ones?

thanks in advance,
Bro' A.

Instead of sending the card back, I would just junk the case, and get a proper one from the aftermarket, although that will mean getting a normal type CPU cooler, rather than the odd fan shroud rig that Dell's Dimensions used.  However, the simplest thing is to take measurements of the existing case, and then research various options to get the specifications on sizes.

If you want a referral to a good value on a case, I have used these Coolermaster "Elite" cases in two builds and you get a lot of value for the low prices:

www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

That one is only $42 right now.

The various 9600s are based on a somewhat modified 8800 chip that is now getting on up in age, and unable to compete with the comparable Radeons for either performance or price.  The Radeons have smaller power draw, and thus require less cooling, so that they are smaller overall.

Here's a nice HD 4670 with free shipping, for $80:  www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

Thanks, Gorath Alpha. That 4670 still won't fit due to the PCIe slot being the rightmost one. But newegg has 2 others that seem comparable and compatible at $80 (XFX and Gigabyte).

Unfortunately, I do not have the time or budget to get a new PC or upgrade this one beyond memory and graphics card.

Today seems a particularly auspicious one for bringing this back to the top (there's abrand new query about what I assume is another of those atrociously crappy Geforce "FX" video cards!)

The Vanilla 6600 is well below the practical bottom end for video.  If the CPU is closer to reccomended, You can set the screen to 1024 by 768, and all image quality settings to low, and that should speed it up for you.

Thanks to everyone for their posts here. It certainly helped with my decision on what to buy to upgrade an old desktop that I'm now using for DA:O (since my laptop goes to BSOD when it starts the character creation). I picked up an ATI HD4670 for my older dual core Intel 1.6GHz pc. also picked up a 2nd gig of ram... So far I'm playing with my monitors resolution maxed out, with all detail on high and no problems.... With the mountain of different cards out there it was REALLY helpful to know which to watch for.

Thanks again. It's been a long time since I've been this excited over a new game (since BG I came out).

If no one else has beaten me to it, once I get my XP dual boot going, I can give info on FPS and stuff with the Asus G60VX and its ratings. It uses an nvidia GTX 260M for what that's worth.

I'm trying to sift through Graphics Cards on NewEgg. What Manufacturer is the best category search? (Aka who's the most reliable?)

I sincerely hope i'm not getting annoying, but for any who don't know, i'm a puder padawan in middle of a new puder build. I really seriously DON'T wanna screw up, but at the same time, i'm not rich. I already had a close call with a Forumite Graphics Card recommendation that looked buff, until Gorath Alpha's sweet puder wisdom saved me from a bad idea of settling for a 128-bit Memory Interface. Now that I know how important it is, i'm trying to find a card with 1GB Memory Size & 256-bit Memory Interface without ripping my funds supply apart. I'll settle for 512MB Memory Size if I must, & found such a possible card if I don't find better.

Many thanks for your time.

Please remove the "- ATI Radeon HD 3800 series" from the working list, because it is not fully compatible with Dragon Age: Origins.

Actually, Zethell, it is only certain of the 3870's having trouble. My HD 3850 hasn't skipped a beat yet, although it might not know I have an HD 4850 ready to pop it in should it ever do so (incidentally, it's a 512 MB Sapphire, with the older style full-length fan shroud, from eBay, still new, but OEM, that I paid slightly over $100 for, with shjipping).

So, Lightning, does my choice encourage you?  At retail, that's a good price for a stellar performer (a hair slower than the 5770, but leaving a future option for higher resolutions open).

P. S.  I just took the HD 4850 out of its bag (no box, it was OEM version, so no driver CD, no DVI adapter, no box), and it looks like the image I'll link in a moment, from GPU Review's HD 4830 feature.  The shroud is 3/4 length -- starts and ends before either end of the card itself.

Yes! Image IPB I dare to hope i've got a build worthy Graphics Card found at last! Still gotta deal with my CPU, Heatsink, & Thermal Grease obtainment, then the Graphics Card will be 3rd.

Many thanks for the sweet info in this thread! Image IPB

When they say the  ATI Radeon X850 series   is the ATI Official Minimum Card they aren't kidding. That's my card and the game always defaults back to low graphics detail.  It is so odd, that eye color has to always be brown at low graphic detail. I guess they just didn't want to bother making the most of the cards capablities and put their efforts into the current top-of-the-line cards.

Actually, it seems that the only reason that at least one X800 wasn't part of their testing was ATI stopped supporting the X700 and X800 for the later upgrades to drivers than the X850, so that Omega drivers are needed. Besides the absence of ordinary eye color, the blood splatter is also omitted from small textures.

I still don't understand why they named the Geforce 6600 GT for XP; that was borderline when new (as was the Radeon X1600 Pro, of course, with very little difference between the X1600 and the X1300).  I've been thinking about the two cards in that sentence's parenthetical, and decided that the X1300 was really a "1450", and the X1600 was the one 5that should've been named "1550", instead of the renamed X1300 Vanilla becoming the X1550.

While getting ready to add an update, I noticed a potentially controversial statement that I suspect I've already covered closer to the end here, and added this edit.  All of the FX / 6n00 / 7n00 Geforces were "weak" in shader unit functionality, and when shaders are used heavily, they fall well behind various Radeon equivalents.  The X1600 was not very fast overall, but had good shader capability for its class at the time.  The 6600 GT was faster, without the shaders' presence in a game's code, slower by far when those were used in quantity (Oblivion, NWN2, The Witcher, Fallout 3, Dragon Age).

Update: The card I linked above is my final card choice lock-in. It's on it's way! Image IPB (Especially before NewEgg gets wind that this card rocks & considers upping the price!)
(Ended up getting the Graphics Card 2nd instead of 3rd because my Graphics Card choice picking ended up done faster than my CPU/Heatsink research. The CPU/Heatsink is 3rd now, but that's another story. Image IPB)

Could someone please sticky this thread?!

I guess the Nvidia GE Force 8400GS is not up to the task of this game. It did great for Neverwinter Nights 2, but not so much for DA:O.

I am on the lookout for a better, lowprofile power conservative card.
