If you buy it through xbox live then you need the origins disk. If you buy the physical format you only need the awakening disk.
this is actually false.
you need the both versions of the game since i added my dragon orgins to the my xbox 360 hardrive i didnt need the dragon age disk since it was already dled to my hardrive on the xbox but does tell you if you wish to import your characters you need to have both copies of the game.
if you go thru the xboxlive dl you wont need the disk since it downloaded to your harddive of your xbox. as long you have on your hardrive your fine and not just the save.

You know that you need the CD in the disc tray in order to play games?
Xobx live purchase - Origins CD needed.
Disc format - Awakening CD needed.

however...
You will load into awakening with only what was in your inventory from the last save from your origins game.
I would recommend getting the disk back because of like what happened to me if you had gear in the chest at the peak or you were wearing alot of dlc gear then you will prolly load into awakenings naked with no wep as I did since I was wearing warden commander armor and had starfang loaded in only with a sheild which is nice since you start the awakening off in combat lol :-)
Remember that all DLC items prior to Return to Ostagar will not transfer so no blood dragon armor, preorder items, collector items, Wardens Keep items including starfang (this belonged to the Warden Keep dlc), Shale items All of these will not transfer over.
My recommentation would be before you start your awakenings game go back to your origins game after you killed the archdemon and throw away all dlc gear that is not from RtO (rto stuff you can keep) then take everything out of your chest at the peak that you want then take all the gear off your party members at the camp that is good now when you load into awakenings you have all the gear that you collected over the first game since you moved it all to your inventory. Also dont forget to get all the big items from the vendors as they are still best in slot ie the ring from orzammar vendor the belt from the circle vendor the necklace from party camp vendor

Also, is there another storage crate in Awkenings? If i start awakenings all loaded up with the stuff i want to bring from Origins, I'm gonna need somewhere to put it all, especially armor for when i meet up with new party members.

So from what you're saying is the only stuff that comes with you is what you are carrying in your inventory? The crate doesn't carry over into awakenings? Toss all non RtO dlc, strip down my party and make sure i'm carrying everthing I want to take with me into Awakenings?

Yes to your first paragraph.
Yes to the second, but you do have to go for a little bit (less than an hour) before you get access to it.
