Just want to put my two cents in and just say that I would really like to see a race or family of elves in the next DA that get the respect they deserve.  I'm kind of tired of seeing them portrayed as vermin, sometimes idiotic do-wishers (ie. Micah in DA:A), and fearful-minded nomadic dwellers.  This just isn't how I've come to see the "elf" in my travels through the fantasy realm, and have always prefered to play an elf character in RPGs.

I recently created a poll (http://social.biowar...683/polls/3954/) to see if players would like to see a "dark elf" character option or npc for future DA games, and I'm showing a close favoring towards their inclusion for future development.  Now, I'm not suggesting that a dark elf be an only option, but I would like to see a race of elves in this game get the respect (either through fear or their constant ability to outmatch human qualities in every aspect) that they deserve.
I DO NOT want to have the respect given simply by being a Grey Warden, and therefore I must be an "OK Knife-ear"!  :pinched:

So...basically, you want a different world than the one of Dragon Age, with a different history. Something more Tolkien, or D&D.... Personally, I think it's interesting that they decided to go such an entirely different direction.

Nope!  Same world ( it's a BIG ONE, you know!)  Same history (check their history! codex 101. lol!  you'd be surprised!)  Just a different take is all, and perhaps a new direction, thanks.  And thanks for reminding me!  I really need to dust those books off! Image IPB

It seems to me that if any significant faction of Elves pop up and start trying to shoulder their way back to dominance they'll be cut down before you can say Exalted March.

Exalted Marches are a lie. Theyre such a big lie only Sten could explain how big a lie they are. Everyone here knows Duncan's beard created the Universe!

I really would like to play as a dark elf. I especially like the dark elves from Champions of Norrath, the dark elf shadowknight combines warrior type melee strength with poison and undead spells. Generally dark elves are good stealthy warriors that can hide in the shadows and fight with poisoned weapons, daggers or magic, so in Dragon age, they would be a great rogue/mage combo character. Given their role in other media, they are usually evil in alliance, but there are others who are not.

I once played something (its name escapes me) where the dark elfs had no allience at all. They just killed everything that came near them besides these things that were like the darkspawn but metal. The metal darkspawn basically entered their village ripped it apart.

You have to understand the trends at hand; for most of rpg history elves have been protrayed as superior to humans - beautiful, immortal and powerful. They would inhabit kingdoms that made the beauty of all other Human kingdoms pale by comparison. Often they would be in their twilight - with their civilization on the brink of ruin and yet even this nadir is often something to be in awe of. We see  this in Tolkiens Elves, the Elves of Warhammer, the Night and Blood Elves of World of Warcraft, Elves in the Elder Scroll Series, and the Dungeans and Dragons Elves.

We now have a shift in perspective...

We see now in Origins elves that, far from being powerful and almighty, are brought low by humanity and made near docile save for those who would not submit -the Dalish. Elves living in slums, thats not something you see in every other rpg now is it?  This isnt unique to DAO either, we see in the Witcher series Elves suffer under racism from Human society and pogroms not unlike that suffered by the Jewish in modern history. They too fight back in Scoia'tael guerillas at times and it is one such conflict the next Witcher game centers around.

Elves are now used as symbols of a repressed minority rather than a superior race that we can aspire to be as perfect as. Rejoice, For this is a sign of the industry's maturity - not its fall.

One of my FAVORITE of the elven characters!  They were sooooooo sinister!!!!  However, my definition is very "grey",  no pun intended, when depicting the elf in mind.  There is a very fine line between the evil in action when "defined" by one's very nature, and the evil in action when "determined" by another's (ie. humans).

True, but it does not mean that it is lost and forgotten.  It simply means that it must be re-awakened.  Painfully, if need be.

The elves will rise again or dissapear completely eventually. The Dalish say they will never submit but the humans constantly grow larger and need more slaves to pick on and kill. Eventually the Dalish will wear thin and it will be time to make a stand or dissapear forever...i vote they take the last stand. If they are to die out, they should die out as warriors! Even as a human i'd help them against the evil tyrants that rule their lives.

The more of their past that Dalish recover, the more powerful they become.

Give it time. The elves will make a comeback. In fact, I have a feeling they will be pivotal in the fight against the tyranny of the chantry that is sure to come. No people will consent to living under another people's boot forever. The humans and the chantry have become lax in power. Give it a good couple of centuries, at most. We'll have a good bloody war, and it won't be so easy to take down the elves this time.

Yep!  I said it!  Kinda sucks when you put it in that perspective, ay?  How are the elves, now? Sorry I used such a present mode of transport in my illustration.  I'll make sure to use "cart" next time. Image IPB

If you don't care to see dark elf theme introduced into Dragon Age, you're racist. Ha! That's good. What was it the other day? Oh right, over in a different thread you were racist if you didn't help the talking darkspawn. LOL

Is this whole thread a troll, OP?

Elder Scrolls have proven that non-pathetic non-Tolkien Elves are possible.

There's the small statured, highly annoying, sneaky master bowmen that are the Bosmer; the arrogant, stately master magicians that are the Altmer; the xenophobic, introspective Dunmer, the iconoclastic, profane Dwemer & finally the cursed Orsimer. Each with a unique history & their own strengths and weaknesses.

That is ridiculous ... what you are saying is you actually want Tolkien elves instead of DA elves ... go play the Middle Earth MMO - or DnD online. I get sick of everyone wanting their races portrayed exactly the same way in every movie, book or game. Tolkien is popular, but he is not the only flavor out there.

And you've said nothing about the DA dwarves lacking the honorable culture they possess in DnD. DA Dwarves are often conniving, falsely honorable, manipulative, and scheming. Hell, in some ways they are the dark elves you're going on about.

And Dark Elves? This is not the Forgotten Realms.

If you want to play a game about elves rising up and fighting against the oppression of humanity, play The Witcher; that very concept is a major part of the setting.

>>I find it difficult to grasp that a collective body shaped from the very "essence" that is grace would fall so far from it.<<

Great cultures collapse, it happens. When ancient Greek culture collapsed they actually lost written language for centuries - try to fathom that.

I like the elves where they are now just fine. Plus if they got any queer ideas about their status they'd just get into no end of trouble. I mean they're elves, they'd just be lost without humans in general and the Chantry in particular helping them stay civilized and in the Maker's good graces.
