Playing an elf mage in Dragon Age is fun, threatening to Incinerate all those rascists never gets old.

If people or so desperate download the Toolset and make a Dark Elf. Although D and D is so bad the newest edition has dozens of playable races and then dozens of sub species, although there were going to be half dwarves in the game.

If you start having dark elves, people will demand iron dwarves, or 10 varieties of Qunari etc.

So what ? Is that a bad thing ?

Well, Arl Foreshadow's note seems to suggest there will be more about the elves in the next game. I think the fact that the DA elves are so wildly different from other fantasy worlds' elves is kind of the whole point. That said, I pretty much despise the elves in DA. Past injustices or not I feel no sympathy for them as most of the elves I come across have a chip on their shoulder.

Err ... wildly different ? DA Elves ? Hu ???

Lets check: they have pointy ears, are thin, and love being treehuggers. Jepp. I have met that kind before.

Elves are for example also suppressed in the Witcher.

They are smaller than humans, but fantasy never agreed upon if elves should be larger or smaller than humans.

No one said that DA elves were completely unique, just that you do not often find oppressed elves.

Elves in DA are awesome. I find them extremely fun to play. I LIKE that they are oppressed. If you want the fantasy tree hugging type of elf play as a dalish. The origin is crap, but I still have fun playing them.

a mage elf is not in the same oppressed type of environment if you play it a different way (because it's said quite often that if you are a mage. that's what you are no matter if your an elf or a human) It's also the background I pick if it's an elf that is not deeply rooted in some sort of elven knowledge (as in I don't think a mage elf would know about the elf+human=human like a city or dalish elf does) I prefer to play as a city elf. yes, I know it's your typical zero to hero story, but she also gets to hook up and fall in love with an awesome, sexy, wicked elf. (opps, my zev love is slipping in there)

(as in I don't think a mage elf would know about the elf+human=human like a city or dalish elf does)

It wouldn't matter to them as men are scared of mages and so they're basically going to get involved with a Templar or another mage and all children born of mages belong to the Chantry.

yes, I know, but I was referring to my mage elf wardens. They are no longer under the chantry's rules so what would happen to a mage child normally doesn't matter. During this game though a warden has the ability to be in four romances that the chantry is not aware of and mage warden's are no longer locked away in the tower. I'm just saying for me this justifies my elf mages being in a relationship with a human. (because in my other plays I just can't make a female elf that doesn't' care about the elf+human=human thing.)

And then there's always the fact that the taint makes pregnancy unlikely and if it's Alistair then there's no way in hell there will be a baby.

I don't remember that being mentioned until the king-dialog. I'm probably wrong though.

he only brings up the unlikelihood of children with a human noble. with a non human noble the NEED for children is why he brakes up with them.

when I play as a mage elf + alistair I am not going to make him king. :) (as I said lastnight I can't play the mistress )

Oh man. Maker forbid a fantasy include elves that aren't a cliche. There are plenty of D&D based games you can play if you want elves to be as you've always known them to be. Personally, I never liked dwarves until I got a taste of Dragon Age flavored dwarves, and I'm sure many people feel the same about the elves. Can't please everyone, but I commend Bioware for making efforts to be unique.

I thought he mentioned it once his approval got high enough. He said it really quickly like he thought this would devastate the Warden and my DN was like "Yes! No babies to ruin my fighting career and no pressure to get married if I don't want to now!" I think that took him a little by surprise...

ah, I never got that. the first time I did play an elf getting involved with Alistair I had no wiki and I was playing blind. it was my second play through ever on the ps3 (I play on the PC now) My persuasion was not high enough and he dumped my character. telling her that he would need to marry someone to have children because he was going to be king. (and I really didn't read up on the elven history at that time and *I* didn't know about the elf+human=human thing) That was a sad play through. Ali sacrificed himself.

after that I only romanced Ali as a human noble. I'm *planning* on playing a game as a elf mage in a relationship with him and not making him king, but I haven't done it yet.

He'll actually give you the spiel on Grey Warden infertility with any race in a romance (I believe) in one of the "where do we go from here" convos...Off the top of my head I can't think of the exact line.  But if you choose "Maybe we don't have a future" he'll mention the reduced/lack of fertility and say that maybe you don't have a future, to which you can reply with a few answers saying you don't want things to end.

It's not a conversation tree most Alistair romancers would choose, but it's a really sweet dialogue path to take.  I recommend doing it at least once.

Incidently every time I hear about a dalish fem-warden romacing Alistair (the worst offenders, but Morrigan/Leliana + male dalish is just as bad) I cringe, Bioware did such a good job of portraying the dalish as xenophobic elven tradionnalist that non-Zevran romances shouldn't even have been an in game option.

*raises eyebrow*

Ouch.

So a DEF isn't allowed to evolve and to change during her long travel with a group of humans, who are actually good and friendly to her?

Odd.

Cuz I find it natural that this is going to happen. Spending so much time with your companions is not only that you'll have influence on them, they will also have influence on your Dalish warden. Mistrust is a natural thing for every Dalish, but being Dalish doesn't have to mean they have to hate every human forever, just because they were raised with that hatred. Person changes during making their experiences, after all.

Maybe it is just me, but being a Grey Warden and accept the role means also to learn that the world isn't just black and white. There are many, many shades of grey in fact. And one of them can be to learn that not all humans are the monsters your clan have scared you with since you have been a young Da'len.

My Mahariel for example hated humans in the beginning, was bitter for all she had lost, had to learn what it means to be a GW, trusting no one in her group for a fairly long time. Yet it happened eventually. Growing to trust Alistair was a loong but rewarding process, because she had seen that she always could count on him. That he in fact was different from the other humans, someone who respected her for the person who and not what she was. With the talks and trust came the conversance, an odd feeling of closeness to a human who happens to live in a complete other world/culture than she had known it, but still they had so much in common. From there on it was only a small but very complicated step to the stage of love.

This romance is actually the most rewarding and (bitter) sweet of all (for me) because the possiblities are so huuuuge. Hence my FF about it. It has something from Romeo and Juliet, kinda a forbidden, despite all odds love thing. Yum. <3

I love the Dalish, I love playing a Dalish Warden, who remains true and Dalish. I just can't stand a Warden who stagnated. If someone can RP that in the end he/she still is the bitter, xenophobic elf person like she/he was in the beginning, more power to you. I for myself would bore myself to death....cuz where is all the fun in that?

The way elves are portrayed in DA:O is absolutely my favorite element of the story. Generic fantasy elves are the most boring thing in the world, Elves forced to live in ghettos and looked at with prejudice by the other races are FAR more interesting. In Origins a great foundation is laid for some sort of storyline in future Dragon Age games where the Elves gain more respect or decide not to take it any longer, etc.

A lot of people cried about lack of half-elves.

They're mostly gone now, though. Moved on to bigger better things to complain about.

I love the way Dragon Age portrayed elves. Instead of being ******-erotic sex symbols and prancing magical faeries, they end up being ghetto ass poor people that nobody likes.

Just like how it should be.

The Elves deserve their plight for being born as Elves.

Seriously though, its good to see Elves put in their place for once. I was getting sick of "Stupid human, you are no where near as wise as us!"

Hell, I was annoyed the player didn't get a chance to be racist to Elves. You can be an ass on the way into the camp, but thats more to do with you being a thug than you hating Elves.
