Hi everyone -

The BioWare Bazaar was launched this week as the start of a year-long celebration around BioWare’s 15th anniversary.

We recognize that BioWare has a global community, and the Bazaar this week was originally intended to be an international event to reflect our truly global fanbase. Unfortunately, we encountered some last-minute legal complications around how contests can be structured in different parts of the world that prevented us from including all territories in this first event, even though that was our original goal.  And for that, we sincerely apologize – our goal with this sort of celebration is to show all our fans worldwide how much we appreciate your support!

BioWare definitely really values all members of our world-wide Community, no matter where you live.  Accordingly, in the coming weeks, we will be announcing details about future events specifically for fans living in those territories which were excluded from participating in the first BioWare Bazaar.  The future events will be a bit different from the first Bazaar in how they’re set up and structured, but our goal is to feature the same caliber of awesome prizes and great BioWare collectibles.  We’ll announce more details in the coming weeks :)

The reception from those fans who have been able to take part in this first event has been incredible – thank you for participating! - and we’re looking forward to future events where we can enable fans from additional territories to also join in the fun.

Thank you all for your continued and ongoing support and participation in the BioWare Community – we really appreciate all your support over the past 15 years, and the future will be even brighter!

Sincerely,

Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk
Co-founders, BioWare

It's all good. No need to apologize.
For all my being upset at the way this event was organized and announced, I remain convinced that, were it not for EA, this would not have happened.
*wistful smile*
So if you ever do need saving from them, please say so and I (the hopeless idealist) believe that the gamers will stand behind you guys and do all that is possible to help.

                               ***

And to EA Games, I address this:

The reason you wanted BioWare, in the first place, is because of what they did – so LET THEM DO IT, on their terms, and stop bringing shame upon their good name, you bunch of narrow-minded civilians.

And with that apology, that you, at EA Games, should have issued (and that I accept as coming from you), I’ll take a romance pack, a cheeseburger and a medium glass of milk.

Thank you.Image IPB

Another question for you Bioware / EA:

When you noted the "last-minute legal complications", did you not think it might be a good idea to post some bit of "secret" news instead of KNOWINGLY excluding the majority of your fanbase?

I am still trying to comprehend the logic behind going on with the "plan".

It would probably even have been better if you had increased the timer to another week or so with a small apology saying: Working out the last kinks in the cable.

Why continue when you must have known this sh*tstorm would be the result.

You know how easily agitated gamers are :)

I think I get it. Even bad publicity is still publicity, huh? :)

All it took was besmirching Bioware's good name a bit.

Good to see that you're still as cheap as ever, EA.

Keeps things constant at least.

Well words are empty until they are put into action. Now, I was not as upset as others obviously were about the whole contest (I still love Bioware) but giving some vague promise about a future event at an unspecified time and form doesn't mean much to me.

It was still very nice to get an official apology (again I wasn't too bothered about it in the first place although the forum shenanigans were fun!).

P.S. Keeping my signatures for funsies!

Outrageous! How dare you rob us of our anger and whining! YOU DON'T GET TO APOLOGIZE!!:crying:
*mumbles something incoherent* On the other hand, seeing as I can either let it go, or eat myself up being mad... Apology accepted.

... Well played Bioware... well played indeed.:bandit:

If you really planned the whole thing as global, you could have mentioned it from the beginning... anyway, what has been done can't be changed and I don't have anykind of grudge against Bioware or Americans. :)

Thank you for the community address!! I was getting worried as some were telling me BioWare wouldn't care enough to comment at all. But here you are.

For my tiny part I totally forgive you but would recommend that the next time an explanation is given at the same time as the big reveal as there was last minute details that messed up your plans, you wouldn't have gotten this big of a reaction.

Thanks for the announcement, Ray and Greg. It's good to hear that this US-exclusive Bazaar wasn't intentional on your part, and that the rest of the world still exists. It might have been prudent to make an announcement like this before making the Bazaar public though, but at least you did it now. Hopefully there's a lesson learned on both sides here.

Sorry - but believing "last minute complications" seems rather ...... naive.

A company like Bioware does not initiate a project like this without clearing legal issues before hand. It isn't like tons of competitions like this never have been conducted already from various companies - everybody and their dog would know that legal complications existed and that most competitions of this manner is US only when the company is in proximity to the US.

They would have known well before hand that the competition would be (most of) US only and could easily have announced it as such instead as a "community" event and they should have done so.

This apology seems like little other then a hollow attempt at appeasing some of the (non-)community members who were for some reason surprised by Bioware's focus on US only as is customed with such events as this.

I see your point, but I don't think BioWare really handled all this by themselves - EA public relations/some other division would sound more likely. Even if BioWare originally requested the campaign to be worldwide, EA necessarily wouldn't have informed them that it's completely impossible to achieve - not until the campaign was ready to be launched anyway. Or something very similar in fashion. I'm not unaware of corporate cabinet politics, but I'd still like to believe Ray and Greg really are sincerely about their apology, even if they're not telling us everything.

It is easy to blame EA because they have a bad rep with so many people - but it is still a Bioware event, Bioware announced, Bioware logistic and Bioware's handling.

No matter the circumstances - "last minute legal complications" seems very unlikely and even if Bioware somehow was told by EA on the eve of the launch (after all the contest rules must have been written out at some point so it is information known prior to launch), Bioware could have apologised right then and there for not being able to include the entire "community" instead of waiting until the people who thought they were part of the community started to complain.

Even if blaming EA then Bioware would have known the complications when the event launched and could easily have changed how they announced it to the public.

And therefore - the legal complications sounds extremely hollow because they are situations most everybody knows will exists whether you work with them or just experience them - as said - countless companies have run countless competitions. It is not new territory these contests.

And that is what makes it an easy excuse to use... if it had only come alongside the announcement and not significant time after.

Are they sincere - perhaps, possible - I have no idea as I do not interact with them personally. Is it still hollow - danged sure. Is it still dividing the community into an A community and B crowd - oh yes.
It is just poor "community" management no matter the spin put on it. And the real questions is - what actual events will Bioware make for the rest of the world and will they be exclusive to us?

Anyone else finding this widespread mindset of
'if anything good happens, it's thanks to the developer, if anything bad, caused by the publisher'
a bit simplistic? (not only Bio/EA, but overall)

Only a Sith deals in absolutes! :P

i changed my sig to show how much i've supported bioware so far. and i do hope to add a lot more icons to it in the future.

(still wondering if i should add KOTOR2, remove NWN2, or leave it as it is, since NWN2 is registerable on the old bioware forums)

I'll be "satisfied" and "conviced" when the said/stated event appears..
For now, im just thinking about "empty promises" and "silenting the whiners/spammers"

follow-up: Seeing the same happened with the ALIENWARE event/offer, I find it hard to see an equal offer as the current one on the BioWare Bazaar will pop-up due to legal issues (you did manage to ship the games over to the rest of the globe didnt you? Or was that just pure cash-flow)

More to the point - it is hard to see that it was "last minute complications" and not planned this way ;)

Meh bioware didn't even have to put on this event so oh well. It just shows we really do live in a me, me, me, mine, mine, mine society.

Now just ask yourself what would jesus do... O.o ?

He would do anything for a klondike bar and then click on link requests to give people tokens.
