That would seem to solve the issue - even against people who found other BBCode using boards to use the image redirect tactic on.

And from people deliberately falsifying people's redirects to try to get them disqualified - which was my concern.

Should have done that from the beginning.

Dunno why Bioware wants to punish people for their own oversight.

What's done is done.

I hope Chris' message was just an April Fools' joke, and a way to scare people from continue doing it while they worked on a fix.

yeah hopefully it was just a joke, but for something so serious, idk.

but I'm still not sure if that will stop people from getting other users disqualified. if you think about it, chris said they are tracking people who do the image tag, so even if it redirects it is still traced and the person will still be disqualified. unless they don't suddenly don't make the image tag against the rules.

There isn't really any reason to monitor it if it can't affect totals anymore.

To use my strange analogy:

There was a pile of candy.
People were told to get candy.
Some people used trash bags. They did it openly. More people used trash bags.
After 3 days the candy owners said they didn't want people to use trash bags and it was against the rules.
People stopped using trash bags that heard it.
They said they'd be watching to make sure no one snuck into the candy pile with a trash bag.
Then they poked holes in the bottom of all the trash bags so they couldn't hold candy.

Why would they keep watching for trash bags?

yeah that's true, idk, I guess I just connected them tracking the image code with them keeping up a list of users that used it. case and point - I'm tired lol.

@Hader - they made it so the unique url's are redirected to the game sites instead of going straight there, so nobody gains points from using the image tag trick.

They have said that they are capable of tracking it...how I have no idea, but that is what they said in other threads.

If they log data on the HTTP requests its fesible, there could easily be something different about the request itself. I'm not sure exactly how the BBCode does things, so I can't really say what the differences might be.

The redirect thing would seem to solve it completely, as the [img] tag links wouldn't trigger the redirect. But all of this should have been said and done days ago. Not well after it the trick was unvieled, and general uncertaintity over whether or not it was kosher had time to set in. They should have said "No, don't do this" the first time a thread mentioning the method was closed.

I feel sorry for anyone who submitted their link to the "Visual link exchange" thread not realizing there was a difference.

I see what they did here, I think it's not a full proof safe guard unfortunately.

They can track clicks and their origination by using the Referrer header. Unless you modified your browser to disable or do other things to it, whenever you visit a page (including image tricks), that new page can request the URL in which you found a link to.

So if Uncle Sam posts a link on 4chan and a bunch of people see it, then on Sam's BioWare account, assuming BioWare logs such information, they can say, "Ahhh, these 3,954 tokens he got all came from 4chan.org/blabblahblah/numberxxxxx"

My guess is they do track the referral, since is perfect for stat tracking this kind of competition---especially to find out which websites are being used as a medium to generate buzz.

Well, people will still take advantage of the system somehow.

This whole link referral thing was busted from the beginning. They basically gave an incentive for people to troll and spam to get people to click on their links. I didn't want to do that, so I opted for the less disruptive alternative - the [img] trick.

Some more thoughts:

Really what happened with this is a failure of communication. The whole link exchange thing encourages and rewards agressive and spammy behavior, all I really wanted was a way to compete without being spammy and distruptive here and all across the internet. What should have been done, is the first time a thread about the issue was closed, the method declared illegal , but I suppose its not worth dwelling on how this could have been handled better now that its in the past. Instead we were left in uncertaintity until four days into the competition, plenty of time for people to think "Well if I don't start now, I'll never catch up" and so forth.

I really don't care that BioWare decided to declare the method cheating, and I'm happy to abide by that, now that I know, but I'd like to think that  a compromise could be reached for those of us who did it, not knowing any better. I can think of a couple things off the top of my head:
  • Only invalidating the tokens gained through the [img] links, assuming they can indeed tell
  • Allowing everyone to keep all their tokens, and giving everyone who didn't use the [img] link a bonus to bring them in line with those who did--say for example on average people who used the [img] tags are 15k ahead of those who didn't, everyone who didn't gets a free 15k tokens. Again this assumes they can tell who did and didn't.
And I'm sure more options could be determined if time was taken to sit down and think about it. I don't think any of us are being unreasonable here. I mean we haven't even started comparing you guys to fascist dictators or anything! Please just talk to us on this, and try to work something out.

Indeed, just tested and yes I can still trick image tags. Have a good day.

Edit: Aw man no icon of a smilie dumping gas onto a fire.

You didn't do it because you would get a couple thousand more hits...?  I find it much easier to believe people were doing it to gain a competitive advantage, or, as Bioware seemingly forgot to condemn it, used it to not be at a complete disadvantage.  I've already said it multiple times, but they really should have stopped this before it became an issue.  To paraphrase one of the posts above, "You can't let someone run for 30 yards in a 100 yard walking race without expecting other people to run too."

Well, the benefits were manyfold, of course. I didn't have to waste time spamming and trolling, and I still got my tokens.
