That theme uses a very Celtic mix of instruments. I hear flute, fiddle, harp, tamborine, and a tranditional drum (the name of which escapes me atm) as well as more traditional instruments like cellos. That instrument which gives the very reedy sound similar to bagpipes is one I've heard Lorena McKinnet use in her work. I'd have to check through my CDs to see if I can identify it. It is very haunting music.

You can hear it in the bar in Lothering where you meet Leliana.

The bar has its own music track which is very different, as does the Lothering Chantry.  The main Lothering track can be heard outside in the village and also in the open area around the windmill and beyond.

P.S. Thanks also from me, marbatico, for that link to the mp3 utility. It works like a charm when you don't want the video as well. :)

The tracks I have are called simply 'Lothering' and 'Lothering (alternate)' with the alternate track being about a minute longer. The first is 2:32 and the second is 3:16 long.

Would you happen to know what the name of the fsb-file is that contains the audio? I'd like to extract the mp3 to a bitrate of at least 128 kbps instead of the 64 kbps we have now.

The file I extracted the .wavs from is C:\\Games\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\audio\\sound\\ music_bank_strm_new.fsb (note: the folder where the main game is installed, not the personal data folder used to save characters or install mods).

The specific tracks within that file are:
DA_M_lot_village_a1.wav
DA_M_lot_village_a1_n.wav
DA_M_lot_village_a2.wav
DA_M_lot_village_a2_n.wav
DA_M_lot_village_a3.wav
DA_M_lot_village_a3_n.wav
DA_M_lot_village_a4_n.wav
etc etc.

Basically, just sort the folder of extracted files by name and look for the ones with "lot" in the filename.  The names are pretty descriptive, really, if a tiny bit cryptic sometimes.

This is the track that plays in the Lothering bar: (OST 67 'Tavern')

This is the track that plays in the Lothering Chantry: (OST 47 'Lothering Chantry')

I think one of the most haunting and atmospheric pieces of music in the game is the track that plays at the Party Camp.
A version of it also plays at the character creation window:

Both versions are here:

(OST 15 'The Party Camp')

(OST 44 'Character Creation')

No, what I'm asking is, what source did they get this from?  "OST" implies it was a soundtrack or something, yet I've got the CE soundtrack, and it isn't on there.  And I looked for this song since release, and never found it till I started this thread and someone posted it.

Actually, from the very first time I played DA:O,  I actually thought the bar music sounded so much like the 'Barbarian theme' from Rome: Total War.

Listen to the beginning.

Holy crap, listening to those side-by-side, they really DO sound similar, at least the beginning portions!

DA:O -- Bar music

ROME: TOTAL WAR -- Barbarian theme

Listen to the opening in each.

It's the singers that sound similar. Could it be the same singer in each?

Sounds like the same lyrics/lyrical cue.  Actually, wondering if it's the same composer for both games?  I'm too lazy to do the research.

The composer of the RTW soundtrack was Jeff Van Dyck, and for DAO it was Inon Zur, so not the same.

I think the music styles are different anyway, though both are good, but imo I think the DAO soundtrack is the more atmospheric (I have RTW).
