He's a mage dammit!

He's not very good at it though...His clothes are all wrong, and he doesn't carry a big stick...nor does he speak softly...

Proof, all great anyones are mages...

Arcane Warrior FTW :P It's what I am. I wear armour, carry a sword and shield AND throw spells around.

Remember that Duncan has a shield, he just left it at home.

Warrior is my guess based off the -game-. Leave your books elsewhere, this isn't the SW:TOR forums for arguing extraneous supplements and expanded universe :P

They aren't just any books; they're by David Gaider, and are officially a part of the setting, as much so as the game itself, as far as I know.

****Book spoilers****

Duncan was a rogue; to be exact, he was a thief, and was conscripted into the wardens one jump ahead of the hangman. - which makes Daveth's story of how he was recruited kinda cool and funny.

That said, after The Stolen Throne came out, a lot of people argued that Loghain was a rogue in that, so... for background characters, what you start out as isn't necessarily all you are.

Well, rogues and warriors are almost identical in DAO.... except I'd say Rogues have the upperhand in almost everything, unless you want to be a tank.

Well the Prima Offical Game Guide says he is a DW Warrior.

Oh right, that's why DW warriors out damage rogues easily. You really should actually play the game with different classes before spouting nonsense.

They have better utility (lockpicking, poison) but do considerably less damage than warriors (except tanks).

Prima Guides are well known to be full of assumptions and outright incorrect information.

Why people buy them is beyond me, I've never learned anything from a Prima Guide that I didn't learn from playing the game or I couldn't find better information for on the internet for free.

Duncan definitely was a thief living in Orlais before he was conscripted, and they go into it, a lot. It is possible that being a Grey Warden Commander has caused him to lose his anonymity and be forced to leaving his thieving ways behind. This wouldn't be a problem if DA had cross classing!

Honestly Rogue armor is only one baby step ahead of mage cloth armor in this game sadly. Sure you have a few decent pieces of gear with good stats but from beginning to end you look like you wore the same set of armor as you first started the game with, usually its the same for mages unless you become a Arcane Warrior.

It was a real let down for me, I tend to like to play mages and rogue/assassin types more so then warriors, really all you can hope for with a rogue is a pair of cool looking weapons at the end of the game. If your an archer well, your likely going to have a bow that looks just like your first one, or pretty close to it.

Personally I would love to see some mods that give some different looks to armor for rogues and mages, most of whats out there now looks to just change their colors.

With my Dalish rogue/archer I used the Medium Ancient Elven Armor set for him until I could afford the Felon's coat. I am using the Felon's coat now with the Ancient Elven Gloves, boots, and Honnleath helm. The felon's coat has higher stats than the Ancient Elven Armor, but doesn't look as good. For a Dalish the Ancient Elven armor looks great, esp. with the helm, and the medium armor didn't impact my stamina use that much. Using the light armor with medium gloves looks good as well I think. Kinda beefs up the forearms. I was hoping that the Felon's coat would look a little different than the normal light armor model, or at least be jet black or something to that effect. Unfortunetely that wasn't the case.

I's say if you want a different look, try the medium armors. Some have good stats, and look good. And if you use some of the boots or jewelery that lower aggro from enemies, then you don't have to worry about it attracting enemies. I use stealth so I don't worry about that too much, I just bolt and dissappear.

There's 3 distinct versions of light armour looks-wise, leather, studded leather and a 3rd type that I bought in the Dwarven city (don't recall the exact name of the armour) for humans and dwarves. Dalish armour is different again, particularly for females. If you don't like any of them you can always shove some points into Strength and wear any armour you want since DA doesn't limit armour by character class, but there's more important stats for a rogue than Strength.

Yeah, I was super disappointed with the rogue/mage armors too. At least with the warrior armor, regardless of what it is, it has a different shape for the most part than anything else--it doesn't just look like a palette swap =\\ Also, while I didn't mind it so much for Leliana, when I made a male rogue, it was like all the armor sets for rogues were basically skirt things. Are there no pants in Fereldan?

But yeah, at least rogue armor looks cool--most of the mage armor (especially for the girls) is super-unflattering.

But I think the underwear design is the worst! I can live with having only 3 armor variations if they make better undies in the second game! XDD

Yes you can. You won't find it very convenient to do so though

Duncan, is/was definately a rogue. The Calling novel was pretty much (more or less) *his* origin story.  Many places in the book wrote out in big red paint on a big white wall that he was a rogue. I will not spoil it as to where and what for the sake of those who have yet to read it.

His armor is most likely medium armor, by the sound of the "chinking" when he walks, or it could be a design like the Caddash Stompers found in the game. It would have been nice to have had three versions of Warden Commander's Armor, with titles something like:

Warden Commander (warrior)
Warden Sentinel (rogue)
Warden Elementalist (wizard)

Back on topic......

Yes rogue sets are uncool. I've had drakeskin on lelianna since almost the beginning, and she's heading into the final stages dressed the same.

Mind you - I started a second playthrough with a female rogue, and quite like the steel chainmail armour you get. Just spend a few points on strength and use medium armours, i say.

Oh, and Duncan's class is DUNCAN. He's a one and only.

I also think the Ancient Elven Armor is the best looking armor for rogues. I play female rogues and all of them have the boney collarbones showing which I do not like in the leather armor's no matter what tier.

It's really not good armor however stat wise, I think it should get downgraded to light armor just so we can have something different to wear without stamina penalty. Yeah I like to look decent at least...I'm picky that way. Image IPB

I don't really go for looks I go for quality in game yeah it good to look cool but if the gear has not as good stats you will be depriving your self damage, defense etc.

Is there at least a hoodie helm or something for the rogues? anything at all that would make a rogues appearance fit their description? i mean they are only the coolest and strongest ****ing class in the game IMO :D, or a set?

I don't know for sure but Duncan's armor doesn't look light to me unless it's some uber light breast plate, looks silverite to me so I'm guessing medium armour.

Shield? Well my guess is Duncan's shield is more ceremonial than anything else; however, it's not like you wouldn't go through life not learning new skills. He probably just needed a sled anyways, it gets snowy when he's hunting darkspawn.

side note: Duncan laughed at me!

With rogues I always go with, Felons Coat, the Longsight, Red Jenny Seekers and Cadash Stompers and that looks cool enough for me.

But ancient elven is definitely the the coolest rogue armor.

Rogues need a hood, and female rogue armors are too low cut, and Bioware should stop being so lazy with armors. Seriously. Wades Superior Dragonbone, Loghains armor, Cailans Armor and Juggernaut armor are all just reskinned versions of Massive Plate armor. Likewise with Blood Dragon/Dwarven Massive. Even on the DLC armors Bioware? Really?

EDIT: Like in Demons Souls Bioware? That's how a thief/rogues armor should look like.

Hmmm.... Didn't read all the reply's so don't know if anyone said it already but... The Dhalish armor set has a different look (at least on Leliana and female Dhalish elf PC) than the light/med leather armor sets. Although in my opinion neither were very exciting to look at.
